Reaper's Gale: book 2
« on: May 29, 2014, 09:45:21 PM »
And suddenly we have a new race, with its own interesting history and cruel secrets established. Clearly  none of the Letherii conquered races are as subjugated as everybody thinks. The Shake, now with a queen, will rise. And their (half K'Chain Che'Malle?) Mages will be more powerful than anybody can foresee.

The fight Letherii against Awl was as bloody as expected. The Atri-Preda was a fool, dismissing Redmask like that. I mean she saw what he did in the city all on his own...

Tehol and Bugg are as interesting as ever. I'm really curious about what's going to happen in Letheras. Karsa, Icarium, Errant (one-eyed now - hah!), Mael, Rulad, etc... there are just too many potent forces around.

What's up with the spear Seren has found? Spear = Trull, I'd say, but a T'Lan Imass spear? Onkrack? Are those two parties bound to meet soon? And how weakened is Quick Ben really?

If the Tarthenal will flock to Karsa and the Shake to Twilight, then the Lethereii Empire as we know it is about to vanish. Or it may not - really don't know how this will turn out.

I'm glad that Jahnal was saved and I enjoyed the Chancellor and the Patriotists being beaten by the Edur. That will get very bloody quite soon I guess.

So Udinaas son is now grown up. What did he inherit from his parents? Quite curious. Is he soletaken too?

Can't see Udinaas as a Shield Anvil to Errant atm. Taking the grief from Forkrul Assail...well...

Very interested in what will come of Feater Witch and the Errant. Unholy liaison that is...

And Brys Beddict will be back. The same... or altered?

Hedge and Emroth, the renegade T'Lan. Where are they headed?

I'm glad, Toc has still his stone arrows. I'm positive we'll see soon what they can do.

Only 3 weeks behind Xiagan.  ;)

Some cool stuff in this part, but a bit slow in places I found. Quite a lot of set-up.

I'm not enamoured with the Redmask/Awl'dan plotline at the moment, as great as it is to see Toc again. I'm just not all that invested in it and would much rather be spending time with those in Letheras or Seren Pedac et al.

Brys Beddict is coming back! This bit - the whole Errant/Feather Witch section - was really exciting and also disgusting to read.

Enjoying Tehol and Bugg a lot more in this than I did in Midnight Tides. They work far better when there are other characters around them for me. And knowing Bugg is Mael adds a little something extra.

Is Onrack mortal now or is he just like that because he is in Tellann? Hmm...

Loved the scenes with Karsa and the Seguleh, and Samar Dev is a great character. I wonder what she is going to do with the Ceda in her knife?

And the Malazans!  :D  It seems their presence has been felt throughout Shurq Ellale's plotline, we just didn't know it! Very, very cool. I'm really excited to get back to following the Malazans and seeing what they're up to.

There's a review of Reaper's gale on the main page from Friday (minor spoilers in there) and it states that the Redmask plotline is more or less unnecessary, so you're not the only one thinking that.

Only three weeks but how many words?  ;)

I noticed this too and the same in Toll the hounds. Dunno if this is needed for the tremendous conclusions and battles we (always) have in book 4... Anyways, the end of Erikson's novels are such a blast that I'm okay with  bit slow time in the beginning. :)

Senior Assessor an interesting character I don't know how Erikson comes up with all this great characters you want to read about

Errant offering Sanctuary to Fener

Samar Dev Binding KuRI Qan to her knife  :o this seemed slightly out of place for her to do this

Seren Finding a T'lan Spear hmm
According to some,* heroic deaths are admirable things

Oops, forgot to post here, but from what I can see, I was pretty much feeling the same as everyone else at this point. :)

My comments - some are in reading order, others I grouped because they refer to the same characters.

* Bugg losing his temper! Had it ever happened before?
And saving Janath - I'm so glad!

* Wow, Icarium is *really* old...
* So Karsa and Icarium have finally arrived, the scene is setting. It's so interesting to see them from the point of view of all these people who don't know them truly, who only see the race and the myth and what they represent on the outside.
* I'm really looking forward to their fight with Ruhlad. Who will it be? It can't be straightforward, will it even happen on this book (volume)? Whatever it is, I can't wait for the result!

* The caves filled with bodies :( my comment on book 1 about the evilness still stands...

* I can actually see Erikson's anthropology and archeology background, his views on civilisation and society, the evolution of both. How any country who proclaims to be "the first" has always come after another...

* The jokes with Ublala, Tehol and Bugg are superb and make me laugh out loud sometimes!

* Oooh what was the real reason for Shadowthrone to save Kalam? Cotillion thinks it's bad

* Silchas Ruin wanted the betrayal and emprisionment? Or did I read that wrongly? Too much secrecy with him, still

* Fenek the Boar of Summer here! So he was cast out and isn't really dead?

* The whole part with the Errant, discovering the Warrens and the Deck, wanting to go to war with Paran. Then his confrontation with Feather Witch, are they creating their own House? With Udinaas too?

* Oooh the Ratcatchers are into Bugg...

* Samar Dev knows Feather Witch? And what is the one already on her knife, since she says "another one" when she catches the Ceda?

* Hannan Mosag sent Bruthen Trana in search of Brys Beddict?

* Ben, Trull and Onrack are in Tellann now, and the latter became flesh and blood again!

* Loved how Erikson wrote the battle, we normally don't see them from the general's point of view, the one who needs to send the actual fighting groups into this place, and that place, and the enemy does X so she must actually move Y into Z instead...

* Another tribe, the Shake, and Twilight is the Queen now! And supposed to get married to the guy on that island where Shuck Ellale is now!
Are they part K'Chain Che'Malle, the descriptions sound remarkably similar (and would explain how Redmask got his bodyguards).

* Wahey, the Malazan arrived :D ;D
