My only complaint with the book is that I still have no idea why Degan (Bronze) is so loyal to Drothe. We see flashbacks to Sebastian and Ana, but never with Degan. They're freindship doesn't make a ton of sense. They didn't know each other as kids (as Drothe ONLY knows him Degan), but somehow they're willing to die for each other.

I think it is simply that they are best friends and Degan's loyalty / morals that have been drummed into him as part of the order... Doug might clarify it I guess we will find out more about him at some point though

I got the impression that they've known each other for a very long time, and that there's an incident buried deep in their pasts that may explain their attachment and loyalty to each other. Admittedly that's more from Bronze's part than Drothe's. I actually would like to see more of Bronze, and possibly a side storyline that follows him in a future book would be greatly appreciated by this reader. I finished the book this morning, and the more I think about it the more I like it. It's probably the debut of 2011 for me and may tip One Salt Sea out of my top 5.

I too can see a standalone or short novel based on Degan and his crew in the future

I finally finished it today (thanks to my landlady not telling me I was going to be trapped by remodeling on the house, at least I got some reading in).
Good enough book. Mechanically, I have some issues with the conversation and the timing. Thematically, it was a decent book that set the table for something that can make for a long lived series.
The first person issues I had at the beginning seemed to melt away for half of the book before that issue came up again. There were a lot of issues I had with Drothe TELLING me what was going on instead of using the moment to make Solitude and others appear more than props. It could have made for a far richer world from up high as some of the lower class people are defined well enough.
What I might look for in a sequel: More definition of relationships and letting the characters who AREN'T Drothe give me hints of what they can be instead of having him hold my hand, as it were. The payoff of being a Reluctant Prince with a wider scale of dealing with people. Also, the side affects of his seed popping.
Degan? Eh. I didn't feel the same connection the others might have. Again, another side effect of having Drothe tell me these things.
However, the telling issue is my bone to pick as a writer. All in all, I will keep an eye out for the series and see what comes of it.

I enjoyed this one a lot. While travelling, I happened to download it randomly on my ereader, and am sure glad I did!
Any news on when the sequel is coming out?

I think Douglas Hulick said on his website that the sequel ( Sworn in Steel, great title) is due out next year. I think he's contracted to write 3 books, but I'm not certain if that necessarily means it's a trilogy.

Pretty sure his world is big enough to do more and more of them... as some people have suggested, some characters also invite spin-offs and such... that would be cool. Personally, think Doug has a very bright future ahead of him

And after that? Dunno. Need to focus on the one in front of me at the moment. (Though I do know I'd love so something with the earlier history of the empire at some point. I didn't salt all of that in to forget about it.

(and all that stuff) *grin* I'm so pleased with how well the book has been received Doug and really can't wait to see what you come up with. I really think that the fans will ensure publishers keep you about releasing books for many years to come yet and I can't wait to read them

Definitely loved the first book in the series. Will continue to buy the books as fast as they can come out (after all GRRM has admitted that he isn't the fastest writer on the planet).
