Title: Favorite Book Club read of 2013?
Post by: Arry on December 03, 2013, 05:39:10 PM
So, I know the year is not over yet, but I was curious to hear what everyone's favorite book club read of the year was. Just for a reminder, this is what we read in the fantasy group:

And here are our Science Fiction reads:

I am going to think over the lists and come up with:

Favourite book this is hard, I'm going with Glen Cook because I read all the Black Company novels and that lead me to the Garret novels (I love Garret)

Retribution Falls runner up

I'm going to cheat,  joint 3rd, The Folding Knife and The Night circus  ;)

Favourite Discussion Folding Knife loads of people posted

The book I wish more people had participated in Foundling by D. M. Cornish not many posted for that one but I will be getting round to reading it eventually

Best surprise find The Night Circus wasn't going to read it until everybody said there all enjoyed it in the

I would say Folding Knife, best discussions and the best book.  Night Circus was quite lovely, but a little light, and whilst we all adored it, didn't really invoke much discussion beyond.  "Oooohhh, isn't this lovely."  And while it was a way back, Fevre Dream was outstanding.

Biggest disappointment was The Steel Remains.  No plot and seemed to be dark and edgy for the sake of being dark and edgy.

Regarding Foundling, I think it was an off shot of the time when people were mindlessly voting and then not participating.  Glad people are getting on board properly now.

For sci fi, it's an odd selection.  A lot of books which have been called classics, but just couldn't find the love for them.  And Feerum Enjinn whilst good, was a poorly choice (championed by myself) for an Iain Banks' entry novel.  Dune was a big disappointment for me, but did invoke some good discussions.  I suspect I will love Snow Crash, but need to clear my TBR pile and actually read it properly.

OK ...

Favorite Book: The Folding Knife
Favorite Discussion: The Folding Knife
Book I wish more people read: Ancillary Justice. I debated between this and Lives of Tao. Decided on Ancillary Justice because of the discussion potential. If I had to pick one from the Fantasy side as well, it would be The Steel Remains. It's definitely a marmite book, but I really enjoyed it and its interesting getting the different perspectives.
Best surprise find (Fantasy): Fevre Dream - this was not on my radar at all for some reason. Loved it.
Best surprise find (SciFi/Horror): I am Legend - I can't believe I never read this before.

Favourite book: It's a toss up between Retribution Falls and Dirty Streets of Heaven for me.

Favourite discussion was the one about The Folding Knife being fantasy. If we open that out to the whole forum it has to be the British vs American discussion!

Best surprise was Fevre Dream really enjoyed that and so different to ASOIAF.

EDIT: I added a poll to this discussion. And, this is quite a list! Definitely read a good number of great books this year :)

I wish I had a ranking poll available here, because I would love for people to order their top 3 reads. :)
But I don't, so will work with what I have. I included all the official book club reads, so both Sci Fi and Fantasy. You can select up to 3 if you want, but don't have to.

Good idea.  I had to vote for one that I actually participated in, although Night Circus is by far my favourite book on the list.

3 options isn't enough! I managed to go down from 6 to 4 in the last hours but 3? Impossible.  :P

I decided on Retribution Falls as my favourite as I felt Dirty Streets of Heaven was rushed towards the end.

Yeah, I had a hard time, and have actually thought about changing it …. hmmmm. I kept asking myself

What fool gave me only 3 votes? Can't they see this list?? ;)

My favorites in no particular order was The Girl who Circumnavigated Fairyland, Angelmaker, and Ancillary Justice.

Biggest disappointment was A Wizard of Earthsea. Much as I didn't really like any of the others I tried, I wasn't expecting to like them either. I was expecting to like Earthsea.

Ooh, fun! Ok...

Favorite Books: The Folding Knife, Ancillary Justice, The Night Circus

Favorite Discussion: The Folding Knife

Book I wish more people had participated with: Ancillary Justice, or perhaps Snow Crash. I really enjoyed Ancillary Justice and think there was a lot to discuss about it. I wasn't so keen on Snow Crash by the end but I would have loved to see more people's reactions to it. At points I think there were just two of us: me being confused and Arry trying to explain it to me.  ;D

Best surprise find: The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland... I thought I'd probably like this one, but didn't expect to like it so much!

2013 has been an amazing year for the book club!  :D  Really looking forward to 2014!

As someone interested in the results of this poll, but not having read along, how do I see the results without voting first?

There should be a [VIEW RESULTS] button just below the poll. :)

I think my favorite book was I am Legend. Such an amazing read, incredibly moving and tense at times.

I did not join many of the book club reads, but of those that I did I enjoyed The Night Circus the most. It actually ended up being one of my favourite books of the year.

I picked The Girl Who Circumnavigated..., The Night Circus, and Fahrenheit 451 as my three favorites. While the first two were easy no-brainers for me, that last one was much more difficult - it was between Bradbury, Horns, and Old Man's War.

Definitely wishing I'd participated in more book club reads. These look like a lot of great books! (And I love the spread of votes - even if Night Circus is so far ahead of the others).

You participated in quite a few, especially the science fiction :) And yes, the spread of votes is interesting. I wish Feersum Endjinn had a vote because while it was not favorite book, it was quite good and I really enjoyed the discussions. Also a little surprised that Altered Carbon did not get any votes (yet. always time for more) :)
