I am looking for general feedback on the book club. What's working? What's not working? Some of what I would like to know, is if we should continue themes. I think this helped increase interest and participation for a period of time, but now am not so sure.

If you have any ideas/suggestions/opinions on anything that could be done better/different or that you would like to see continue, this is the place to voice them. If there is anything you want to say, but don't want to say publicly, feel free to send me (or another mod) a PM. This is a group activity, and I want the book club to be run in a way that makes people enjoy it and continue participation. I think in order for that to happen, its important to occasionally step back and determine if it is working how it is, or if its time to try something a little different.

While we have some existing members that have been involved for literally years (yay! :D), other members come and go, and lately it seems like maybe there have been fewer 'new' people joining in. In addition to hearing from the regulars (who I really hope will speak up), I would love to hear from anyone that *hasn't* been participating, but thinks they might be interested, if there is anything that would make you more likely to join in. Or anyone who used to participate that have stopped, was there anything in particular that made you lose interest? I know much of it can just be real life, sometimes its easier than others to fit in book club reads, but if there is anything here that impacts your desire to join in (or not), I would really love to hear it.

Thanks!
Arry

I tried to join in with Gardens of the Moon, but really didn't get on with it, so I dropped out about 1/3 of the way through.

I haven't joined in since, but not because of that. I've got such a huge TBR pile that I decided I'd only do book clubs (either here or on another fantasy board) if I already owned the book. So over there I've read Prince of Thorns, The Name of the Wind, and His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire in the UK), because I already had them and hadn't read them.

So for me it's not that I don't want to join in, just that I can't justify buying books when got a ton of books between paperback and Kindle that I haven't actually read yet.

Completely understand. I know you are not alone in this, I have been trying to make a bigger dent in the books I already own. But, keep in mind, you can make nominations. If book club is something you're interested in, you are more than welcome to come nominate one of those books you own, maybe the book club will want to read it with you :)

I wonder how much overlap there would be if we all listed the 10-15 books at the top of our tbr pile?

That's true, Arry. I've been keeping an eye on the votes and voting for anything I already own, but I'd feel odd nominating and then not participating if it didn't win. It would feel wrong, somehow.

I try to participate every month.
If I don't, I a) didn't like the book (as far as I can tell reading reviews and the blurb), b) it didn't arrive in time (King Rat, where are you?)  or c) I already read it.

I found a lot of great books through book club and it is my premier tool to read new stuff (last year I just bought everything mentioned in the forums but my TBR skyrocketed and I'm still trying to catch up, so this year I'm only buying books from authors I already know/like or book club books - with few exceptions).

I don't have a problem with that.  We only complain when people nominate, the book wins and then that person doesn't comment. That is very odd behaviour.

I basically second Smythe's comments.  When you have a big pile of unread books and the winner is a book you don't own, is the start of a new series, it is hard to find the enthusiasm to join in unless the blurb sounds especially amazing.

I'm also trying to get through as much of my Hugo packet as I can. Boy, that was a lot of reading to acquire all at once, even without Wheel of Time.

It is perfectly acceptable (and common) to not participate if a book you didn't nominate or vote for won.

My theory for nominating/voting/participation is that if a book that you had some hand in helping win (either by nominating it or voting for it), then you should participate. Otherwise, you can choose to join in if the winning book looks interesting, and if not, we hope to see you back for the next round of nominations/voting.

I follow the Bookclub as a personal incentive to read and try a variety of books I otherwise wouldn't think to read.

For book clubs I use audio books as I can usually get through them in two weeks, depending on length. This means the book has to be available on Audible Canada, the Rat King isn't. I'm trying to do more visual reading but I'm still slow and it's harder to find the time.

I try to participate in the discussion but the timing doesn't line up. If I get ahead of the group I worry about accidentally revealing spoilers, I like how the discussions are broken by chapters but if I'm already five chapters ahead it hard to remember what not to say. Then by the time everyone else finishes I've moved on to the next book.

Also I'm not very analytical with the stories but I'm working on that.

I follow the nomination threads to see if there is anything I want to add to my TBR list but July will be the first one I'm participating in.  It was actually a perfect storm with Red Rising as I have not read it before, it sounds interesting, and (maybe most importantly) I was able to pick up in a Nook sale for $1.99 awhile ago.

I am slightly worried about how my participation will be within the thread though.  I tend to go through books fairly quickly and I will most likely have the book done within the first week.  By the time we get to Week 3 and the later chapters I will have moved on from the book and I'm unsure if I'll be going back in to actively participate in the later discussions.

I'm reading quite fast too and what I'm doing is writing my thoughts at the end of a break into a document and then read on. When the weekly discussions start, I can post my thoughts from back then into the thread. Works great for me. :)

That's what I do most of the time, and agree it works well. It's just a matter of remembering to pay attention and take a break from reading to jot down at least a few thoughts before moving on to the next section. I find this often helps me remember if other events (that maybe I didn't mention in my notes) happened during the weeks discussion or not. Not always, but way more often than if I don't write anything down.

ETA: I know remembering to stop can be much easier said than done, but it's worth a try :)

I am hoping to do so soon. I think they are good idea and can get people trying a book they might not have otherwise gone for.

I love participating in a Book Club and discussing books, sadly however the current books up for reading are not ones that grab me. Trust me - as soon as there are books I want to read I will participate. My main reason for not participating is that all the books at the moment are what I would call quite dark which I don't read.

Just as an aside - is the current zeitgeist so depressingly bleak that it seems that no-one writes books with a positive outlook of the future any more? Do no authors feel that mankind is capable of finding a way forward?
