Title: [NOV 2016] - 1750 - Voting Thread
Post by: ScarletBea on December 03, 2016, 12:20:31 PM
It's time to vote on November's Writing Contest: 1750.

We got 14 entries this month, almost all in the last couple of days ;)
Thanks to all of you for participating!

Please read through all of the entries in the submission thread and place your votes for your three favourite entries in this thread. You won't be able to see the vote breakdown until the vote closes, so spread the word for others to come and vote! We do ask that if you entered, to vote for someone else.

The key for the numbers of votes is this: 1-5 entries: 1 vote, 5-10 entries: 2 votes, 11-15 entries: 3 votes, 16-19: 4 votes, 20-25: 5 votes, 26+: 6 votes

Remember that the winning entry will be posted on the main Fantasy-Faction site in a few months.

Good luck to all our entrants and thank you for taking the time to read the stories and vote! :)

Voted.

This was a really, really interesting set of stories. There were several very well-written pieces, and others not quite so technically adept but also with really interesting concepts. There was one story with maybe the best sentence I've read in two years of voting on the contest club entries. It was so cool reading ideas I'd never read before.

And there were Trump and Hillary, triumphantly hilarious.

I surprised myself with my choices.

Gosh, now that was one of the first times I truly, TRULY struggled to only vote for three people.

I have another struggle this month in the lines of too literal inspiration, but this time on Lanko's part! Though it didn't stop me from loving his story.

I gave my first two votes to people I think might not be top-runners, but it left me with at least three stories with entirely equal merit and one vote between them. It was sooooooo hard. I'll make special sincere and long reviews for the left behind, because that actually felt unfair.

First time for months I've read the submissions and voted , two stories made me laugh out.

Was surprised at all the comedies and poems this month seemed a lot to me compared to the other monthly contest I've read before.

Yeah, Lanko's story made me chuckle twice but frown once. Good mix of emotions, though the frown wasn't intended, at least it's memorable.  :D

I copuld have used 1 or 2 more votes...

Definitely difficult to only vote for 3 this month.

It was fun to see the variety of approaches people took to this one, especially as many of us noted that we were not immediately struck with inspiration for this topic.

Yup, that's me every month. Coming up with a story to fit the theme is certainly a challenge, but I also love that we have so many talented writers participating. I write the best story I can but in the end, when I'm reading, there's always a few where I'm like "Dammit, why didn't I think of that? It's soooo good." Yet I feel like I learn from that as well. That's why I adore this little contest/club.

Thirteen people voted so far.
That's not much. (Hint: We have more than thirteen stories.)

If you need an extension, I could probably add a day or two to give you more time.

OMG, how close a shave is that, @Lordoftheword ?? Congratulations on your win!
And big thanks to everyone for granting me the second spot on podium. I've heard some compliments on that story, but I expected the lack of a)time travel and b)1750s, to hamper voting a lot more.

It was a really, really tough time voting, and I'll gladly spend time in the critic thread dolling compliments (and critics), but my final three votes went to @Lanko, @LightRunner and @Rukaio_Alter.

Good job everyone, I think mostly you all did works that were better than I expected the theme to create, as I'm not a fan of time travelling in general!

Well, December is the one hectic month for everyone, so hardly anything to hold against you Lady_Ty. And I for one know that you've got more incentive to be out and about given that your christmas comes with blissful temperatures and bright blue skies... Not computer-time weather, besides all the excitement.

Oh wow, thanks for your vote everyone! To be completely honest, this comes as a big surprise! I felt there were several very deserving stories/poems this month, and I wasn't sure I was among them. But I'm very happy that some of you felt so  :)

I personally voted for @Crystallynnfairy and The Witches Bottle  as well as @m3mnoch and his amazing poetry. I honestly don't even like poetry, but his struck a strange and peculiar cord with me and had to get my vote.

Lord and Nora's stories were miles ahead of everyone else in votes received!

I voted for @Lordoftheword, @Nora, and @LightRunner.
Oh, quel surprise! I got the trifecta.  ;) 8)

I liked lordoftheword's story best. A deserving win.
But as Nora knows, I think her story has the best set of sentences I've read in 24 months of these stories.
Quote
I picture the glass sea of Paris contracting, liquefying itself in a mass of living people, monuments and pastry shops, the missile collecting its fragments and taking flight, propelled only by the inexorability of time.
I imagine arguments being swallowed back, wine spit in glasses and gurgling up bottles. I imagine my ring sliding off my finger, Bobby's lips hot on mine for the first time again, and then unknown to me.
Time doesn't seem to ever be kind.
I just loved this.

Thank you so much! I have to admit, this story came bubbling out, and I didn't strain on it much, I had it posted by day 2, though I edited it in the following days, I didn't change that paragraph. Though I was – and still am – pleased with it, it was one of those instances I think we all experience, where the writing flows through you more as if you were a catalyst than a creator. It felt like this had been brewing somewhere on a cloud above my head, and distilled itself without much help of my own.
So I feel the compliment as being deeper, but also less deserved. Very pleased regardless, as having such an effect on reader is exactly what I set out to do on the day I decided to start writing.

My three votes went to

@Lordoftheword  because I thought the story fitted the theme/brief with exquisite precision, but also humour.

@Nora because it was brilliantly well written - stretching the envelope of the theme somewhat - but a beautiful poignant story and also - in retrospect - had echoes of what little I know of the film passengers.

@m3mnoch because I have never dared to do poetry myself and I liked the harsh rhythm that it sounded out in my head.

There many other great and humorous entries in what turned out to be a surprisingly challenging theme (one that I ducked out of idea-less) so congratulations to everyone who managed to come up with a story.

@Nora because it was brilliantly well written - stretching the envelope of the theme somewhat - but a beautiful poignant story and also - in retrospect - had echoes of what little I know of the film passengers.

How funny you'd say that! I hadn't a clue what the film would be about at that stage, I didn't even think about it, I had no plans of watching it, but I since heard some of the plot talked about on the forum, and upon re-reading my story today, I found myself thinking, at the end when he writes that he struggles with the idea of waking her up, that it seemed to be a similar theme. But I haven't even seen passenger yet, so now I'm kinda curious (prolly will see it online).

@Crystallynnfairy if you look at the poll, your votes are the lines in bold. If nothing appears in bold, it means you didn't vote! :D

congratulations, @Lordoftheword!  i voted for yours, too!!

i loved the history-replacement twist, mostly because i didn't see it coming.  i thought it was going to be a sad martyr-sacrifice ending of some sort.  the "no, no.  this was my plan all along!" surprise slay'd -- that was great!

i also voted for:
@Rukaio_Alter -- loved that in media res opening.  and the callback to the fire actually being the permanent problem.  and the 17:50 to 1750 thing?  man, why didn't i think of that?!

@tebakutis -- the brain-knotting concept of time police was probably my favorite trope of the batch.  (tho, honestly the @LightRunner's low-probability-event-protector guy was pretty awesome too.)

honorable mentions that i waffled about with votes:
@Crystallynnfairy -- that salt ring moment was badass.  i went, "WTF?!?" and re-read it a couple times.  so good.

@Jmack -- from the interesting as well as surprising time-echo-duplication thing to the cleverly funny moment where tripper trips to kick off the inciting incident, i think your story was way better than how it seems like you felt about it.

all five of you guys were on my top tier this time, so i had to comb through for minor quibbles in the stories' executions to sort them and make the cuts.

Congratulations, @Lordoftheword. I voted for you, because I thought the story had good pacing and characterization, and I really wanted to know what would happen.

I also voted for @Jmack and @m3mnoch. Both of your submissions were well written and worked really well for me. There were a lot of other close ones, but your two rose to the top.

Also, thank you to everyone who voted for me! It was a month with a lot of great submissions and I am honored to have received so many votes.
