A day in Hogwarts by Noshiba-Photographe (https://www.deviantart.com/noshiba-photographe)

It's the start of the school year in most places and Bea rightfully noticed that we didn't have a related theme yet!
(Apprentices is the closest one I think.)

The most famous school in fantasy is of course Hogwarts. Pratchett's Unseen University, Brakebills University from Lev Grossman's Magicians or Rothfuss' Arcanist University from the Kingkiller Chronicles are other prominent examples. Others aren't so formal or traditional, sometimes there are only traveling teachers who teach history for an egg (Pratchett's Tiffany Achings series) or it's walled off in a convent (Lawrence's Book of the Anchestor series).

To make it short: There are many different schools in Science Fiction (Storm Trooper University is probably named something different but surely exists) and Fantasy and we want you to add another one. The age, race, topics of education or number of students don't matter.

Give us a school/university setting and let something interesting happen!

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. The setting has to be a school.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-750 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys under the B.
Bonus rule: We consider voting in a contest you're taking part in a given. Others take time and effort to read the stories - you should do the same. A small community like ours lives from reciprocity and this contest needs stories as much as votes.

If you want so submit your story anonymously you can do so by sending it in a personal message to @xiagan.

Entry will close September 30th/October 1st, 2019 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.
Submitting a story counts as published. The author retains all rights to their work.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/(sep-2019)-school/(sep-2019)-school-submission-thread/new/#new).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

I told Mrs. JMack, former teacher, about this prompt. She told me what to write.  ;D

My boarding school years finally paying the dividends they've failed to deliver, all these intervening years...

Eek. Magic schools and the like are one of my least favourite fantasy tropes. Have to think long and hard about this month.

Who says it needs to be "magic" schools?
As long as it's a school, and it's in a SFF setting, it's acceptable :D

A young student on a field trip finds a talking sheep, for example and to follow welsh stereotypes ;)

Science Fiction it is then.

Science Fiction is quite tempting. Military academies do have more appeal than most school settings.

The only "school" illustration I have in my folder of inspirational art is this one :

I think that would make a great basis for a humorous fantasy story.

Not what I'm gonna go for, if I have the time and headspace to do anything at all this month.
Things are still bad for me, and last month I lost interest in my own story... This month I stimply won't have much time until quite late in the month. So hopefully I'll find the time around then.

Yes, I hope you manage to find the time and enjoy your writing again!

That image is a great prompt ;D

No submissions? :'(

We might have to keep this theme for another month, then...

School just isn't a theme that excites me.

Bogged down by the WIP, but am currently halfway through a School story. Will hopefully finish in time.

I think another month. I like the theme, but I’ve been totally unable to write this month.   :(

Yeah... I also wasn't inspired. Had an idea but it had no cinch, no punch. I went down to Paris to do some visa related stuff, and was stressed enough to not have the headspace to write. Now I do have a new idea, with a cinch and all, and short too, but it's bleak as all hell and a mimicry of the topic.  :D
I'm not motivated to write these days. I'll give it a shot regardless.

School just isn't a theme that excites me.
That only means you need to find a way to approach it that excites you. Give us a new twist to an old theme!

No submissions? :'(

Damn, I would have won automtically if I had participated :'( ;D

One submission. My streak continues. ;D

Once I loosened my interpretation of the theme, I actually had a lot of fun writing this. Some ideas for my next longer work too.

Ok I've dropped my sad topic and am now in the process of one-day-inspiration-stricken-writing a more comedic set up in a dwarven mettalurgic university campus, mostly due to me being sick all week and having done a re-watch of all of LoTR, and started an incredible audiobook reading of the Fellowship to put me to sleep too.

Just suddenly fancied writing a weird modern version of a peaceful middle-earth-esk uni campus with non human characters. I hope I get to finish it tonight and maybe polish it over the weekend.

Yay Nora!
And I thought a pouf was a normal thing? ;D
Then I thought more, realised that big pouf = bean bag and there are no normal-sized poufs in the UK...

Yay! My two last submissions have both been one day affairs, and I was sick before both I think?

And Béa, I'd be dead surprised if IKEA doesn't sell poufs. Also I have a Moroccan shop in my area that sales them, among many other things! I've grown up with them around, they're perfect for children, and are rather popular in France. But yeah, I've not seen one in anyone's house in the UK yet. Not sure about US. Just covering my bases!

Pretty please?

Ok, I'm closing the submissions, I fear that if we were to have more, they'd have been submitted already.
If anyone was just doing the finishing touches and wanted to submit, just let me know, I'll reopen the thread for you :)

Ahahaha! Well, It'll be easy to vote at least, but it's gonna be a heart breaking podium!
