Your MC did something, planned or by accident, and it went terribly wrong. Life is now constant regret. Do they want to correct it? Is it even possible? Everybody should have the chance to redeem themselves, but this is not a fairy tale - or is it?

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. The story's theme must be regret and/or contain an MC who tries to redeem himself.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-750 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys under the B.

If you want so submit your story anonymously you can do so by sending it in a personal message to @xiagan.

Entry will close September 30th/October 1st, 2017 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.
Submitting a story counts as published. The author retains all rights to their work.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?topic=10904.new#new).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

YES!!

What an interesting topic. Of course it shall be dark, and redemption is not to be had!

Just add a fantastical twist. Like everyone is a centaur or has wings or minor quirks of power. Boom. Fantasy.

The first idea to come to mind when I saw the word regret involves creatures lurking in the depths of our oceans. Perhaps I shall be touching my inner Lovecraftian this month.

I blame the documentaries I've been watching this afternoon ;D.

Just gonna give it a try I guess..

Damn I have good characters, a great location and a plot rigged with regrets, alchemy and badassery, but now I realise there is no redemption anywhere... Haha!

While not part of my own story, I'm wondering if anyone will use both the concepts, but swap the order of the two. Start the story with the character getting redemption, but regrets it as the story ends.

Make this into,a comedy.  ;D

Well, probably not a challenge for him.  8)

Don't really think it'd be hard, one can have regrets due to very ridiculous circumstances, and one can go to laughable length to earn redemption.

This being said I'm not sure the story I have penned down fits the theme that well. No real regret involved, and the intricacy of the universe I'm building up, set in an alchemy factory with tensions between staff and owner, doesn't benefit from the word count.

Might scrap it and go for something different entirely. Mmmh...

My story seems less about regret at the moment and more focused on a sense of isolation and fear. But considering the story's setting and the character is alone there, that's isn't too surprising. Or maybe since the later two are the one's I'm more focused on portraying I'm not noticing the regret.

I've just started warming up to try my hand at writing again and the circle I am working on (that's probably the word that matches best) revolves heavily around errors and consequences. As always, I am not sure how to get this done in 1500 words, but writing a single scene should be a fun exercise.

Hm... Just finished the first draft and the ending took a turn I didn't expect. Knew it was going in that direction from the beginning, I just didn't expect it to manifest as it did. It's also shorter than I imagined, as I thought I was gonna go over the word limit and have to cut back. But it ended up being about 1,200 words.

Well, time to put it off to the side for a time before editing so I can look at it with fresh eyes. I just hope it doesn't turn out like January's story where I forgot about it until February.

I was surprised I'd forgotten. My phone's calendar is set up so the first of every month my phone reminds the new prompt has come out, so it should have sparked my memory. Then again I'm not the biggest fan of Fanfic February. I think I may have just turned off the alarm and not given it much more thought. (I have nothing against fanfic, it's just never been my thing in terms of writing subject)

I'm with you. Its surprisingly hard to capture characters you didn't create, get up to date on the worldbuilding someone else did....  I couldn't handle that month either.

Finished one story, but I'm not... thrilled with it. S'okay.
Have a second idea, but I'm not rockin' that one, either.

I re-read my "The Fishwife's Tale" and "A Sliver of the Sky."
Yeah, don't have as good an idea as those yet.

Slowly finishing writing the story today. Might let it stew a few days and submit late to refine the story better. It's super gloomy, rather violent and with weird choices of narration. Not a winner, I think, but a fun write. Since the MC is a type of supernatural cop, I seem to be digging the fantasy crime genre pretty well.

'Fun to write' is always the best.
And anyway, I think you've said that in the past and won ;D
Title: Re: [Sep 2017] - Regret and Redemption - Discussion Thread
Post by: Nora on September 16, 2017, 05:48:28 PM
You'll notice my first win had traces of comedy in it (the demon story), one was a love story, and the latest featured people in a waiting room and a child sized god doing a fit of jealousy, without blood shed. Overall never violent stories, where people actively die or the tone is depressing.
What I'm working on right now is heavier and no one survives the ending. The tone is weird because the pov of the story is cheerful and absent minded, at odds with what physically happens. Plus it's 1st person present tense, not a fav with the locals.  :P

I've been working on this from an original one liner that I came up with, and it hasn't been fun per se, the writing is tedious and not going very fast, but I enjoy the setting and idea so spending time in the universe and thinking about the story is fun.  8)

Edit : first finished draft sits with 165 extra words, and I'm think of over-writer @Jmack and wonders how he copes! Man, you're always way past the limit and still manage to make it... What dark magic do you use? I'll be lucky if making the text leaner crops 65 words, I'd still be 100 over the limit.

Every idea I have for this is 1,500 words for regret and 1,500 works for redemption.  It's been near impossible for me to come up with something that can get both in such a short space.

It's really surreal just how much they match though. Like from the premise, to the setting, to the set-up, to the resolution, to even really small shit like 'being sent by a parental figure' or the talk about heroes and the like. It's almost eerie.

(Also, I hope you realise that this inevitably means we're going to need a mini-option in the voting thread to decide who did it best.)

HAHAHAHAHA omg I'm pretty sad that the defining characteristic of my personality has become whining about work and being exhausted.

That said it's 1:23am, on Sat night/Sun morning.  My 3-year cumulative end-of-grant report was due to the federal govt Sat but I'm overdue and it's STILL not done (b/c everytime I stepped in the office all week I was given millions of things to do and couldn't even start on the report until it was time to go home), and all the grading for the teaching I did last month is due on Monday. The restraining order papers need to be served to my stalker by Sunday and I can't find anyone to do it. And I have jock itch but no time to do laundry. Soooooo.... errr... COFFEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Damn it, I just had to complain, didn't I.....

Sounds like you need a wife to help with your stalker paperwork and your laundry. Try clicking on those ads that offer to sell you a Russian one.  :P

Seriously, at least it'll all be over soon, and you'll go back to normal levels of busy.
Or, you know, you could dump everything, sell what you don't need, store the rest away, fly with a bag to Scotland, and come live in my backpacker. You can pick up an easier job in town, relax, meet lots of new people and live without pressure.

Dropping everything has to remain an option, if only to ease some tension.

Running the risk of turning this into a weird plug for Edinburgh, is it a little too odd for me to say that, aside from living at Nora's backpacker this is almost exactly what I did four years ago?  To the building in this picture?  (The one on the left not the castle, obviously).  And that this move coincides almost perfectly with my first story entry here on the forum?

If it's not too odd, then I support the suggestion whole-heartedly!

Wait wait, are you saying you lived on the Grassmarket? In the backpacker there or in a flat? You're not there anymore?
At least I started writing back in Oz. It'd have been weird if we'd both post our first story here from the same area. Super weird.

I lived in one of the flats for just over 3 months.  My girlfriend and I came up for what we expected to be a temporary thing.  Ended up staying longer than expected.  Still in Scotland and not too far from Edinburgh since we both work in the city as temporary seems to have become permanent.

So you can certainly say your suggestion works!

Well, I don't think most women find jock itch attractive.  Or dudes with stalkers. So there's that.

On the subject of not being in a relationship:

So walking a few blocks from my apartment today I passed this:

I didn't realize LA had a Slut Parade, but apparently it's huge.  My fav was a girl that had a shirt that said "I'll grab my own pussy thank you"

So, @Bradley Darewood and @Lanko: are you working on your story and I'm waiting, or have you given up and I can close?

I don't mind waiting (reasonably)

It's 1am and I'm still grading.  I have work at 9am tomorrow.  The earliest I'd be able to start writing would be tomorrow after work ends at 8pm.

Then sorry, but I'm going to close it.
It's not as if you only had a week to think about the story...

Honestly regret's more my thing-- my ideas just ran long and I didn't have time to pare the one I started down. The whole month was right on time. Maybe I could finish my regret story that's not eligible for the competition and post it in the discussion thread in case anyone wants to read it?

Oh that's cool! Come into my work sometime! (Waterstones on Princes Street!) We should get a coffee and a writer/sff conversation. Does your gf write as well?
Further to my pm, @Nora, I'll probably be coming into Waterstones at some point on Saturday.  Work decided to give me some book vouchers (ok, just shopping vouchers but if they're usable in bookshops, where else could I use them?) and they are never going to last long the way I go through books.

Ha! Answered you before seeing this! Besides what I said on my message, saturday you may see me, but I work until the shop closes. I might be hidden at the back or in my RP room, since my job is to manage RP (Related Products, everything that isn't a book!) and since we're gearing towards christmas I might be busy with it. Feel free to message me (I'll get the mail), or spot the short, brown haired woman with a fresh frog tatoo on her left forearm. I have round black metal rimmed glasses. Also my hair is very short and curly. No one else has hair as short as me on the staff, you can't go wrong with that! :P
Pat me on the back! But let's sit down and have a drink sometime next week if you're keen!

It appears it's one of those months for me, where I'm fine with my story until the contest locks. Then I reread the story and find I hate most of it. The past few stories I've done I reread them after and while there were things to change, it wasn't to the degree of dislike this one generated inside me. Maybe it's just regret I didn't fit in another revision or two into my schedule.
