Pirates!

Aug, 2012. Xiagan dresses as a pirate for some long forgotten joke on this lovely forum with its long gone pirates writing group.

Ahoy, me beauties!!! Ye all know o' course that t' 19th o' September be Talk Like A Pirate Day.
So better be prepared and polish up your pirate lin'o! Pirates have a tradition on this here forum and o' course it was no happenstance that Bea posted that pic o' hers today! So get your hooks polished and start spinnin' some yarn! Only bilge rats and land lubbers don't take part!

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. PIRATES!
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-500 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys next to the 'youtube' symbol.

Entry will close September 30st/October 1st, 2016 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/(sep-2016)-pirates!/(sep-2016)-pirates!-submission-thread/new/#new).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

PS: Likes will come a bit later (as usual), please remember what you wanted to like. ;)

Ha, I'm thinking Mr. J is regretting not sitting on his story for one more month, now. :)

Or perhaps we just need a sequel where Severance Sharp tries to steal his boat back from Sami!

Okay. If I can't do anything with that theme, you should take me out back with a shotgun.

God. Damn. It. I really should have.

Yea I'll write a sequel to a story no one is asking or voted for :P

Either way this'll be a mighty fine interesting month Cap'n!

What a great idea! I think I'll go for the broader, stricter definition of a pirate, which is robbing stuff at sea or wherever maritime law applies, be it on shore, land or inter borders.
I think I'll work some dinosaurs in it too.

Pirates is pirates. Can't see why land pirates or space pirates would be forbidden. It's just riskier of it doesn't quite fit the theme, but ultimately up to us.

Nothing is verboten (see teba's post above hehe), but some voters might be more traditional and think you're eschewing the theme.
No harm in trying, though ;)

Goddamnit those anti-piracy videos. So irritating. Especially because the people who have to sit through the damn things are the ones who bought the bloody film in the first place - pirated copies don't usually have that!  >:(

Nah it was just @xiagan (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1148) who did that. He acted out an entire story through a series of photos of him dressed as all the characters in the story. Xiagan the parrot was quite cute but Xiagan the pirate princess was all kinds of wrong. Took months to burn that image out of my retinas.

I've had a bit of inspiration tonight, but my hand wanted more sketching than writing, and I had some fun mapping out some ideas... If I manage well I'll have sailor insults, modern day data piracy, dinosaurs as team members and weapons, dinos as boats and labour...

Here a messed up troodon coming back injured from a reconnaissance mission with a strapped Go Pro...

My pirate group will be a small team working with the (now established) semi-aquatic spinosaurus as the stearing and powering part of a pirogue-like assortment of vessels. That's too crude, I want it much bigger, but I wanted to draw rings like piercings in its hide between vertebrae ridges to pass ropes... Little troodons as parrots?

It's all very light-hearted, and I sadly doubt I'd be able to illustrate the rigged ship I plan for the spino anyway.
Now I should probably actually start writing!!

Right! I'll accept if I can get 2 months to write it  ::)
I'll try and make some illustrations because dinos are awesome, but I'm crap at drawing humans and nature in general. Nice idea though, and great compliment, thanks! Might be worth trying some storyboard style pictures.

Well, I wouldn't be "in" because there would be little chance of me winning that, and competition in drawing sorts of freaks me out. I used to be mediocre/average in the club of young people who applied to France's best art schools, and I've done some etchings that still strike me a crazy too good to be mine, but all that was almost 6 or 7 years ago, during which I hardly practised at all, so I'm aware that I'm way worse than I used to be, and feel all the less confident or keen to compete for it!  ::)

Edit : here you go, a bonus last sketch, in coarse pensil of a broody cap'n and his pet troodon begging for pats. The captain is petting him but the sausagey fingers got lost in the feathers.

Hah! That's a good one.  ???

Srsly though, while it's a cool idea, not a chance of happening. Saurus inexplicably lacks the confidence to show her artwork publicly (I wish there was a more emphatic word with the same meaning as inexplicable), and Raptori has never really been interested in comics (never read any actually). Plus RaptorSaurs don't really take part in contests these days.  ;)

I also don't get it, but as long as you're writing for yourselves, I'm happy.
You *are* writing, right?
Otherwise I'll start pestering you as I did @Saraband (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=32607) ;)

Note: I don't say this in a selfish way, but there are people that I think write really well and lack of confidence shouldn't be allowed to get in the way of their dreams and what makes them happy, even if it's a totally personal pursuit :)

Inspiration isn't the problem really! It's easy to come up with ideas, not so easy to get them to a point where we're happy with them.

We try, but haven't really made any progress. Ends up feeling kinda pointless when you waste several hours and only get a couple of hundred words of crap from it! Don't think pestering would really help - it's not like we can try harder than we already are...  :-\

Yeah that's not the problem - we're able to write a rough draft fairly easily, but after that just get stuck. Hopefully if we keep trying it'll get better though!

You get stuck like what? You used to be doing just fine. Are you suddenly incapable of polishing up your drafts? Did you try writing independently?
Have you tried posting despite your misgivings? Are your doubts in anyway related to few votes in the contest?

You get stuck like what?
Stuck as in polishing the rough draft progresses at a rate of somewhere between a sentence to a couple of paragraphs an hour most of the time. And doesn't usually result in an outcome we're happy with!

You used to be doing just fine. Are you suddenly incapable of polishing up your drafts? Did you try writing independently?
Nothing sudden, more a slow decline in productivity.

Have you tried posting despite your misgivings? Are your doubts in anyway related to few votes in the contest?
Little to no effect either way really. The times we got few votes encouraged us to improve; the times we got many made us want to build on that.

Dunno really. Thanks for the concern, I'm sure we'll work it out in the end. Just wish it'd happen faster!

Newbie question: Are there any rules or regulations on swearing and other derogatory language that one may put within a story? I only ask for two reasons:

1) I noticed the curse words in @ArcaneArtsVelho (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40090) 's fantasticly funny poem from the last contest were either tactfully, or maybe just cleverly,  ***ed out, and

2) I don't usually use foul language, but it IS PIRATES we're talking about...  ;)

Also, I'm a firm believer that one of the best aspects of writing fiction is that ability to write characters who say things that you yourself could never even dream of saying, am I right?
Title: Re: [Sep 2016] - Pirates! - Discussion Thread

@AFrasier (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=41199), I'm pretty sure you can use them (right, @xiagan (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1148)?)
Maybe just note down a warning in the submission, outside the closed spoiler tag, and then the people who don't want to read it can just skip over yours.

Absolutely. I'm totally against any form of censorship when it comes to writing.
Explicit language or other stuff you feel a reader should be warned about before can be written before the spoiler tags like Bea said. :)

true.  they could love the wiggles.  or yo gabba gabba.

*shudder*

myself, tho, i was always more of a backyardigans fan when my kids were that age.  and, preachiness aside, veggie tales was pretty good too.

but -- hands-down, the BEST kids cartoon is without a doubt phineas and ferb.  and, those guys just sit in their office, on speakerphone, and riff with a third writer to create all the songs for an episode.  in, like, an hour.  they're insanely talented.

The more time passes, the stronger is my interest and natural inclination towards the present tense. I know lots of people hate it but I love it, and people like Rob Jackson Bennett are just finishing to convince me to cross over to that dark practice. I love the nippiness of it, the lack of foreshadowing, the flow and the oral quality it has.

Anyway, I wrote much of my monthly in past tense, and I'm cutting it down savagely as I write it in present tense. Hahahahahaha!

I've been working on an idea that has decided to get bigger and bigger and bigger, and then to link up to the second story I ever wrote for the Forum. And now, do I write omni? 3rd person POV for character A, then switch to character B (the real main character)? Or just stick with B throughout (which has its own problems).

Ahhh. The terrible trials of authorship.  ::)

Only indirectly, and mostly in long fiction.

Technical issues with Present relate to its limited tense-forms in English (something like 4 out of the 12), the lions share of which are in past tense forms. That in turn limits the writer's ability to present complex time relationships in simple language constructs (relating to sequencing of things, causal relationships,

Storytelling issues relate to constraining the writer's ability to foreshadow or to link past events to the present, the present to the future, and the past to the future in straightforward sentences - using conventions the writer and the audience are familiar with. It can certainly be done, but that lack of familiarity undermines things. Present tense also does not lend itself to developing suspense in conventional ways (although unconventional ways probably exist waiting to be discovered).

There are other issues with it relating to audiences: its feel is not unlike an amateur, live video - live and immediate, but not deliberate or subtle. Much of this is probably due to the way it influences writers (not unlike first person), tending to make them include asides and irrelevant details because they are a natural part of the flow, but not a welcome part of the story, if that makes sense.

People have been tinkering with it since the late 80s, so it's nothing new. I attribute its lack of popularity to its limiting of the writer's options, especially when stories are becoming more and more complex.

Well then you definitely need to read City of Stairs, City of Blades, and American Elsewhere, because Bennett crafts incredibly complex plots, foreshadows like a true master, and conjures great images and feelings. I think the stories become totally engrossing thanks to the well mastered present tense that allow us to really discover the story as it flows. He's great at making recollections and informative paragraphs without the past tense intruding. To be honest, when reading City of Stairs, I almost realised half way into it that it was present tense. It didn't strike me properly.

I think the tense might be harder, but I don't get that video comparison. Every video seen for the first time has a "live" quality to it. The one type of video that feels past tense, besides w&b, would be camera surveillance footages!
Seriously, I think past tense is the most common, and hence the most accepted, but not necessarily always the best. It depends on the story you want to tell, and should be used only if it fits!
Title: Re: [Sep 2016] - Pirates! - Discussion Thread
Post by: The Gem Cutter on September 12, 2016, 06:49:00 PM
When I say live quality, it has nothing to do with whether the video is new to the audience - I mean the inclusions of things that are not useful, inefficient use of the visual space, jerking of the camera - all the things that are edited out from non-live videos. It's just a feel, a comparison.

And interestingly, the use of "live video" styles in film (Blair Witch Project and some few others) is approximately the same as the number of successful, popular books in present tense - a very small minority.

Of course, if you want to be famous/successful, that's where you should work, as you love it and would be much more noticeable to fans of the tense and its strengths. Not everyone can do it, clearly, and if you can, well that's a super-power you can fight crime with.
Title: Re: [Sep 2016] - Pirates! - Discussion Thread
Post by: Nora on September 12, 2016, 07:10:30 PM
Don't think you can quite link the "live videos" number of attempts and successes to anything due to "present tense". The immense majority of videos you talk of are shaky cams, like Blair Witch, or Cloverfield, or all the new ghost stories with video surveillance and found footages, and are incredibly uncomfortable to watch for a large part of the public. They also tend to be of the Horror genre, because it makes the menace so much more "real" and "immediate".
They can be super popular with their audience, but I for one almost never watch horror. Some of my friends would never watch a shaking cam unless they'd want to puke.
Besides, movies like Paranormal Activity (at least the first) are very far from including a lot of garbage, immediate, unnecessary elements. These are deeply planned films despite the medium. Blair Witch is pretty unique.
I really don't think it can be linked to present tense in books, there are too many elements that are repulsive in themselves and don't correlate to book writing.

Quote
“Some books just come alive in the present tense in a way I feel they don’t when told in the past tense,” says Mitchell, suggesting the decision is a question of following the particular demands of each novel. “I thought that writing an historical novel in the present tense gave The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet a strange paradox. This already happened a long time ago, yet it’s happening now. Time is such an important character in The Bone Clocks – it’s there in the title – that I liked the idea of a narrative that surfed the crest of the present moment for six decades.” As for his second novel, Number9dream, Mitchell remembers “sitting in my then-girlfriend-now-wife’s bedroom and just changing all the verbs from past to present, and liking it a whole load more. Books let you know what tense they want to be written in.”

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2015/nov/21/rise-of-the-present-tense-in-fiction-hilary-mantel

Really agree with that. Looking back, FOUR of my monthly stories were in the present tense.
Two were 3rd place on the podium, another was 2nd place, one is in the voting process but won't make it with that competition...
For this month we'll see. But I find that the mind set behind present tense fits my short stories best these days, but not all stories are good with it, and I can imagine most authors would never feel comfortable in it.

I'm glad to see more trying it though!

I don't know what's going on these days but I keep losing interest in my writing.

The two months I skipped, I had stories in the works, but I thought it was stress and lack of focus and time that kept me from finishing them, besides a mild lack of interest in my stories themselves.

But even this month I'm just dissatisfied by my story, and after a burst of creativity, two re-writes, I just can't be bothered trying to even finish it. There is half a month to change that, but really I'm wondering what's up!!

personally?

i'd guess it's because your world has been upside down for a couple months -- sucking all your creative juices away.  you're spending so much time thinking about and doing other stuff, that you just don't have time to live as fully in your writing.

that's probably why everyone says "make it a habit" and "just write" and stuff like that.  it's easy to get side-tracked by real life.  seems like solid periods of life-stability are a writer's best friend.  (only periods, of course, because occasional random adventures kick ass!)

makes me marvel at those people who can consistently write on their phone, during every spare minute of the day.  just pouring out words all over the page.

Which may be partly because my writing time was broken up in dribs and drabs over the last two week.

But it's done! <Yay>
Oh, so many darlings killed, sliced, and left on the cutting room floor.

Gah. Seen as I'm back, I may as well attempt a Pirate themed story. Seems only fitting! Now.. to actually think of something...

See you on the other side, folks, and good luck!

Thanks, pal! I kinda feel like I've come home to find a group of youths have taken over my living room. But they're the nice kind of youths. The kind that will fetch my groceries and help me cross the street.

P.S - That damn image scared the fluff out of me. Dang. Wasn't expecting it.

You're being lovely there old boy, but m3m probably counts more as your neighbour than a youth. But like the cool neighbour who invites you to BBQs and comes over for beers and brings the beers with him, ya know.

The whiskey pirates of yore, Captain Jack Daniels and his arch nemesis, Captain Jim Beam. We shall say nothing of Captain Morgan's Revenge... that is a tale for another day.

It's great seeing all the new faces (profile pics?) and see that we still have a strong community. I remember there being a bit of a rough patch when the site started to take off (really odd and confrontational members), but thankfully that seems to have settled down!

Yeah, @xiagan (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1148) It's like Paran joining the Bridgeburners (but I'm nowhere near as cool or noble  8))

oooh!  nora!  you should draw a few sketches of your mc!

then, draw another one where they're wearing a pirate hat, eyepatch, and have a wooden leg!

that'll get the ol' juices flowing.

especially if you show how they lost the leg after it got stuck in an ant hill on pirate island, and thousands of ants pincered it off, bite-by-bite.  there'll be juices everywhere!

p.s.  that last part was to help with the darkness that i'm sure is gonna be slathered throughout your story.

I see a lot of "Aye" being used in stories.

Let me just point out that saying Aye alone is an affectation, but to make it a naval expression, you need it doubled.
Typically it'd be "Aye aye, sir". One to say you heard the order, the second to indicate you understand and will apply the order.
Aye aye = roger.

Just in case some of y'all didn't know.

an affectation?  are you sure you're not thinking of "eh"?  as in, "nice mornin', eh?"

'cause "aye" alone just means "yes".  as in, "the 'ayes' have it."  (the opposite, of course, being "nay")  doubled-up, it just means, "for reals, yes."

Unless you're using it as an affirmative such as 'yes' or 'okay' of course :) I find aye aye to be too much. A little over the top unless you're doing that on purpose.

No sorry, I guess I picked the wrong word. I mean, no one says Aye for yes outside of scottish people and pirate characters. So it's "affected" in that sense. It doesn't seem natural, and comes with a certain gruffness due to the type of tropey characters who use this casually. KnowwhatImean?

Well, if you want to depict an accurate ship running, it's normal to have "aye aye", not over the top. Just accurate. Can be too much for the type of story you want to write, I'm not saying you should do it any other way, just sharing the love for the nautical terms.

In the north of England and to some extent around the Midlands (but not as common), 'aye' is used fairly naturally to mean 'yes' 'sure' or 'okay.' I think as far south as Devon (farming lands) it's used in the more common sense of asking a question, the equivelent of the Americanised 'eh' but pronounced 'ay.' Pretty sure Welsh folk use it too, in both forms. Tbh, I'm just gonna go ahead and say it's a British term, but became synonyous with pirates due to popularity of West country accents in Carol's work.

I think the trope comes from everyone following the 'rule' that fantasy has to be in a medieval setting, but for myself it's just a natural part of language (though I'll admit I say it less that my characters, but I do say it often in real life). Hopefully that clears some things up for you?

Woosh... dialect and accent lesson over!

You can request by summoning her ie using @ in front of name like I have done to you. This sends you a copy of the post by email so alerts people to a post mentioning them. She always checks these threads  so will see your message anyway and this one. Just get your final edit done as quick as you can.  :)

@Lanko (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40739), I was actually warm and sleeping ;D (not sure about the dreams though)

I'll wait for you and @AFrasier (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=41199), no worries.

And Lady_Ty, I disabled the email notifications ;) I figured since I'm here a zillion times a day, I don't need to be warned ;D

Are you questioning me saying I was warm?
Or did you mean to reply in the other thread, me saying I was *not* Anonymous? ;D
(I'm not)

It was Lanko and AFrasier, but the latter told me he's giving up on this month for now.
Then xia said there's still another anonymous coming, but he can't post for now, so I'll wait until tomorrow morning anyway.

But, booo for you! You should have got a pirates story!!! >:(

Are we gonna try this out this month?  :o

Another thought: I remember seeing another forum-based writing contest where participants had to create a separate thread for their entry instead of posting it as a reply in a submissions thread (though they did also have to link to their entry's thread in the submissions thread, which seemed a little cumbersome).

While I don't think that works as well as the single thread we have here for submissions, could it work for critiques?

One big positive I noticed about that other contest was that every entry thread gained a number of comments, as if the thread was a little critique thread instead of a submission. Perhaps people who want critiques in our contest could create a separate thread for their story, which might encourage a small discussion rather than a handful of disconnected crits and also make all the crits more organised and easier to parse.

It definitely has some cons - it'd make the forum more cluttered, might feel slightly discouraging to newbies, etc - but it definitely has pros too - another one would be that it'd make it easier to spot which people have asked for crits but not received any/many yet.

I think not. I'm not sure the pros outweigh the cons, tbh.

This is your 4000th post? Seriously?  ;D

Open a topic and let's discuss it! Won't be possible for this month but if the majority wants it and the reasons are good, I'll change my mind. :)

Nah it's cool, I guess if people had been interested there'd have been some more discussion about it in the thread!  :)

Hm, something I didn't think about earlier about the critique thread: What if the winner never shows up or don't even know about that? It wasn't meant to be obligatory, but then what would be another option...

Are we gonna try this out this month?  :o

Well, silly kitty, if only you weren't so lazy and had submitted a story, you could have started and tested it yourself!  ::)

Maybe I will do it later if Sugoi doesn't show up for a week or something.

I'd have asked xia's permission first anyway!  :P

Also, you imply that felines are not eminently sensible? The horror!

Maybe we should go ahead and open the critique thread before everyone moves on to read Corpses and writing for 1750. I'll open it in a few minutes unless anyone has an objection.
