Title: [SEP 2015] Politics, Scheming and Intrigue - Discussion thread

Politics, Scheming and Intrigue

"Triboulet", illustration for the theatre play "Le Roi s'amuse" ("The King Takes His Amusement") by Victor Hugo. Gravure by J. A. Beaucé (1818-1875) and Georges Rouget (1781-1869).

Scheming courtiers with different goals, layers of conflict, strings being pulled behind the scenes, power shifting, social climbers, too cocksure of themselves to be careful, poison, ...

Political fantasy stories (think ASoIaF) usually have a lot of world building and complex plots. Intricate governmental hierarchies need to be created to make them believable. Back story, motives, complex relationships - all that is normally needed. So I'm not sure this can be done properly in a short story. Which makes your main job to prove me wrong. ;)

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. Must contain some politicking, scheming and/or an intrigue. Not a whole story, a scene is enough.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-500 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys next to the 'youtube' symbol.

Entry will close October 1st 2015 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/(sep-2015)-politics-scheming-and-intrigue/(sep-2015)-politics-scheming-and-intrigue-submission-thread/).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

Grats! You're a Bridgeburner, @Hedin (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=32543)

I finished writing it out, but I still have to tweak it a bit. Estimated time of publishing...tonight.

What!? Indeed that's startling! So long as you're not recycling like a vile schemer puling old strings behind our backs...  8)

This month's topic is so broad! So many possible plots it's going to be fun, but also hard to settle for a story line, I'm not gifted with Henry's pace of inspiration.

Also, desperately waiting for the Dragon themed month.  ;D

I see that you too, Henry, became a Bridgeburner recently. Congratulations to you both!

I think it's better to write your story later in the month so you don't have to wait so long for the voting and the new contest. (Though maybe you shouldn't leave it as late as I tend to leave it.  ::) )

I was hoping for an easy theme for this month, but no such luck.  :(

A bit of both really. We could make time for it, but it's not a subject that inspires us much so it'd be a bit of a chore. Makes more sense to spend that time on our other stuff instead.  :)

I know government was mentioned in the intro, but I feel like trying something outside a governmental hierarchy. To enter another sphere of life like religious hierarchies or business. Priests can scheme too 8).

Hmm, interesting. Not sure what I could do with this topic aside from wax political theories, maybe work in some Machiavellian back-stabbing, perhaps boring Parliamentary policy work meetings; we shall see.

ScarletBea, would this theme be suitable for your contest debut?  ;)

I probably should use my generated "map that gives bad directions" plot now because I did say I would use it one day. Hmmm? Doesn't really fit the theme.  :-\   I'll have to think about it. Fear not, I'm going to use it eventually.

A "map that gives bad directions" could be fun in a zany spy story -- spy stories should count as intrigue, right?  Throw in some poison and layers of conflict with the map getting the protagonist into a wrong-place-wrong-time that's so wrong it's almost right in a different way.

Thanks for encouragement and welcome everyone, LIKES to all above.  This  is just for fun and as a confirmed political junkie  I couldn't resist.

Would you be surprised to learn I had terrible trouble cutting out 75 words?  Thought not.  ::)
Now genuinely appreciate how you all struggle to get down to 1500 and not spoil the story. ;D

Finally posted about 2.00am here and felt was stereotypical writer slaving away at all hours.  ::)
Not in a garret though or starving. Ate far too many Cadbury Favourites as excuse I deserved them. Hope you all pamper yourselves every 1500 words when working on your WiP's. New Rule. 8)

I think that could work, but I have two other story ideas that would be more intrigue-y. Hard choices.  :-\

Tough theme -- I like to just have a character, a situation, and a rough idea of an end point and discovery write my way through a first draft.  That really doesn't seem to work for intrigue.

Finally, a hint of inspiration.
I'd started something, and maybe I'll finish it, too; but it wasn't strong enough.
And I've written five 5-line stanzas of a poem that might fit. But it's not really right either.

So, a character, and a hint of a situation.
Guess what I'll be working on tonight...

I doubt it - I think that unless it's specified, there is no genre limit. Might be worth waiting for @xiagan (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1148) to confirm though!  :P

Is this month restricted to Fantasy? I was thinking something along the lines of Dune set in sci-fi for my story this month and just want to verify before I begin. Thanks!
I doubt it - I think that unless it's specified, there is no genre limit. Might be worth waiting for @xiagan (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1148) to confirm though!  :P
Correct! :)

The boat in your basement?
(I picture Jmack as a Jethro Gibbs character (NCIS))
;D What on earth could have made you picture Jmack as Gibbs? I think he's closer to DiNozzo. (At least both of them have a very jocular personality.)  ;D

He has that old gramps air to me  ;D

What's the maximum depth of these pyramids?  Does the middle box go totally vertical (one character per line) at some point?

Me and Nighteyes tried to figure it out once. Dunno. It's somewhere on the boards.

But I was reading through the "forum" rules a few weeks back, like when you're becoming a new member and whatnot, and "pyramiding" is one of the few rules on there hehe.

Well it doesn't have to be about politics. Technically could be about betrayals and traps, so long as there is some power gain for the schemer.
Intrigue and scheming doesn't have to be at court or gvt.
I'm actually puzzled by the association with politics. It's not like it's sinonymes. Or at least it isn't meant to be so.

Though the politics involved don't have to be "governmental."
Mafia, anyone? Office politics? Election to class president? Board of Directors of the ASPCA! ("American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Aliens" if anyone is wondering.)

But, yeah, the theme is Politics, Scheming and Intrigue.

I read it as "Politics" primarily. Such a broad theme, however, so I wouldn't worry too much about it if you go closer toward Scheming or Intrigue.

Yeah there are all sorts of politics. Office politics for instance. I had a friend who used to refer to schoolyard politics between younger kids.

I put the word "politics" into the story twice and there's some, well, maybe a little, or a wee dram of intrigue.
Not much scheming, really. Or at least not much that takes place "on stage".

But hey. Posted! And moving on...

Wow, really not inspired by this month! I already have a story but I really don't feel super keen to write it for some odd reason... Might skip a month for the first time.

Besides I just bought a new computer!! My old one was dying, I had 1/4 of the screen to work on, I mostly had to participate here on my phone. Now all will be better.. Just need to adjust to bloody qwerty keyboard.

We weren't going to enter this month, but a story kinda appeared out of nowhere. Not sure it's really appropriate for the theme, but it's close enough that it shouldn't be disqualified.  ???

Still have a couple of changes to make, so we'll probably post it later today or some time tomorrow.

In all seriousness, we did try to work in some political stuff, but it's mostly subtext, with little that's really noticeable within the story. Party politics drowning out the voice of the masses, public speakers posturing in order to fulfil their own goals rather than saying what they truly believe, voters putting their faith in politicians but receiving nothing but empty promises...  8)

Beginning to look like I might skip a month.  I've got a couple of story attempts that didn't work, an old story that was okay but would need serious work to fit here.  And I've got a short novel that's crying out to be finished.

One of these months I'm going to be the first to post a story. Well, probably not the first because of all these people who can write a story in a day or so.  ::)

1699 words, and my story is done. Well, obviously I need to still trim it a bit, but it is in its conclusion. (bit but, itisinits  ;D )

But now I'm going to take a break and go for a jog through a disc golf course (maybe I even throw some discs  ;) ).

I'll edit my story after that. So you'll have it today (that is, in six hours). That's almost a promise.  ;D

I think it's usually sometime in the middle of the 1st (so like 16 hours from now), but basically it just depends when @xiagan (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1148) has the time to do it.

Looking at when some of the recent voting threads have been created (which is around the time that the submissions are closed), I would say that you still have closer to 19 hours left (if not more). But of course, Xiagan is the only one who can give you a reliable answer.

The hardest bit about it is trying to fit all or some of those elements into less than 1500 words. They require some set up, so unless you have an idea that is 'just right' it's not an easy thing to do and I think a few writers kind of baulked at that point.

That reminds me Lejays17 entry into one of the story contests on AO3. Did it the night before it was due, stayed up until about 3 AM in a hotel room in Manchester, we were flying out to Dubai in the morning. She said if it weren't for the last minute nothing would ever get done.

Yeah... I'm usually not that kind of person. And now it's only becoming worthwhile as I drown in my first pot of french press coffee.

I did it because it would have irked me to miss the story when I had 1/3 down and solid and the plot outlined.
However I had friends over for diner, then we went to dance at the famous Cherry Bar, as my friends had never been to this institution on a Soul Thursday night. Danced our faces off till 2.30am, then rode my friend to safety (his chain broke twice, even causing him to fall over his bike in the evening...)
I had a VERY spooky experience as I got home, as the door was wide open, the lights on but the house all quiet. Flatmate probably too drunk to notice the door failing to close. All my stuff was in order, but I had a serious ass sweat, it was 3.30am after all. Wrote my last 1000 from 4 to 5am, got up at 8.30 and now going to enjoy the day at Mornington Peninsula. Fuck, you're only young once - sure, but I feel like I never really did that kind of stuff before and am already too old for this shit.
