Title: [Sep 2014] - Cliché & Tropes - Discussion Thread
Post by: xiagan on September 01, 2014, 09:15:43 PM

"One Hero" by Paul Davies, PRDart (http://prdart.deviantart.com/art/One-Hero-98558377)

This month I want you to write a story containing the most clichéd fantasy tropes you can manage.

Orphan hero finds a magical sword and saves a damsel in distress (who turns out to be a princess) from the dark lord? Wonderful!

Gr'ygkâ'lúgô'ök, barbarian warrior from the North, seeks the mighty dragon Bragon to avenge his village and it turns out his true love survived and the dragon is his father (who got cursed by the evil witch)? Awesome!

Writers often fear to (unintentionally) fall prey to stereotypes or have their work called unoriginal and full of cliché. Now you are allowed - no forced - to write like this. And maybe it will even help you to avoid the most common tropes in future. :)

Great resources are:
TV Tropes (here: The Chosen One) (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheChosenOne) or Diana Wynne Jones' Tough Guide Through Fantasyland (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/47510.The_Tough_Guide_to_Fantasyland?ac=1).

If you have some resources you can post them below. :)

Rules:

1. This can be prose or a poem.
2. The story must be full of clichés and fantasy tropes.
3. Ignore this rule, it's not really here.
4. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
5. Poetry must be 100-500 words long.
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you pick an already existing piece of your work, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys next to the 'youtube' symbol: (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/Themes/inferno_20a/images/bbc/spoiler.gif)

Entry will close October 1st 2014 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.*

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/%28sep-2014%29-cliche/%28sep-2014%29-cliche-tropes-submission-thread/new/#new).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

*I seem to never be home around the end of month, so please excuse if I'm not always on time (which is hard in an international contest with all the time zones anyways. ;))

I've got a lot on this month and I'm not often one for writing competitions, fun or otherwise, but this one sounds like one helluva laugh! May have to give this a go.

After failing to post in last months competition I'll boldly state my intentions to post this month, by swearing on this sword.  This sword that belonged to my father, who cast it into stone to be held until my sixteenth birthday, under the protection of a dragon.  A dragon that now I come to think about it appeared around the time my father disappeared.  The very same dragon that according to the scroll I found under my good old dads bed, I must defeat in order to free my mother from the evil witch queen.  That  same witch queen who's daughter isn't too shabby looking now I come to think about her.  I'm sure it'll all work out in the end, as long as I can stop accidentally setting things on fire with my mind, long enough to get some actual writing done...

I once wrote a comedic fantasy novel for NaNo. I tried to hit on just about every fantasy cliche I could think of.

Now to see if I can write something good in such a small number of words.

Dang I was too busy in August so I missed the last one... I wonder what I can do for September?

So, have my story done and up. Hope it is a) on topic, b) well written, c) makes sense, d) doesn't have any glaring typos and e) is enjoyable.

If it is a, b, c, d and e then I will happy :)

I've never been as busy as I'll be this month, having to finish my thesis by the end of September - however, and maybe because my brain does enjoy making an idiot out of me, I've had various ideas for this month's contest.

I will try to make the time and put something together, but let's see how it goes  :)

Wasn't planning on submitting to this, but almost two weeks in I get hit with an idea...

We'll see if I can get it done before the end of the month! :D

Mine too...usually in the form of verbal vomit though.  I've never committed my idiocy to paper - I mean, that lasts forever.  I am intrigued and terrified by this contest.  If you're going to give it a go while writing your thesis, I suppose my lame excuses are, well, lame.  I'll give it a shot this month...  :)

~ two days left! It'd be so cliché if you'd all submit on the last day...  ;)
