In September, our Fantasy book club will be reading K. J. Parker's The Folding Knife. I've yet to read anything by Parker and am really looking forward to this one. Hoping a good number of you are able to join in the discussions with us.

Basso the Magnificent. Basso the Great. Basso the Wise. The First Citizen of the Vesani Republic is an extraordinary man.

He is ruthless, cunning, and above all, lucky. He brings wealth, power and prestige to his people. But with power comes unwanted attention, and Basso must defend his nation and himself from threats foreign and domestic. In a lifetime of crucial decisions, he's only ever made one mistake.

One mistake, though, can be enough.

Literary Awards: The Kitschies Nominee for Red Tentacle (Novel) (2010)

Break Points:

  • Week 1: Chapters 1 - 4
  • Week 2: Chapters 1 - 8
  • Week 3: Chapters 1 - 13
  • Week 4: Finished!

So, who is reading with us?

I'm also completely new to KJ Parker ... But I spotted this in Waterstones today and picked it up to look at it ...

... Heck with it. I'd voted for Throne Of the Crescent Moon, but I can still reread that myself. I'm in. :D

Big fan of this one! Just finished doing a reread of it for Tor.com, so am filled with Folding Knife-related fun-facts!

I haven't read The Folding Knife yet, obviously, so this is all conjecture based on the Parker I have read (Sharps) but just for anyone really unsure about reading this. Basically, if you like low fantasy (ie little to no magic), dark humour with bundles of cynicism, anything even slightly historical, and books that focus very much on character - Parker is pretty much the go-to name. The ideas and concepts which Parker explores seem to be very specific and even philosophical (and technical), but the world-weary and dry wit is the thing which left me wanting more on finishing Sharps.

I think I will pass. My first attempt at KJ Parker's work did not go well.

  • OH WOW! JUST WORKED OUT HOW TO DO THIS!!!!!
I think I will pass. My first attempt at KJ Parker's work did not go well.

Sorry but why? You moan when violent fantasy with women portrayed as damsels in distress is chosen and say you want to read intelligent fantasy. An intelligent fantasy novel is chosen and you pass. What  do you actually want to read?

I want to read the absurdly large pile of books I got my hands on this weekend. ;D

Don't let that put you off. I nearly passed on Fevre Dream but was really pleasantly surprised. Authors can write very different books within a wider genre.  :)

True enough, but I wasn't kidding about the large pile of books I acquired this weekend. I would prefer to start on some of those instead as they will probably keep me busy for a while. :)
