Title: [Oct 2018] - Small Magics - Voting Thread
Post by: ScarletBea on November 03, 2018, 09:12:14 AM
It's time to vote on the October Writing Contest: "Small Magics"

This time we got 9 entries - thanks to all who participated.

Please read through all of the entries in the submission thread and place your votes for your two favourite entries in this thread. You won't be able to see the vote breakdown until the vote closes, so spread the word for others to come and vote! We do ask that if you entered, to vote for someone else.

The key for the numbers of votes is this: 1-5 entries: 1 vote, 5-10 entries: 2 votes, 11-15 entries: 3 votes, 16-19: 4 votes, 20-25: 5 votes, 26+: 6 votes

Remember that the winning entry will be posted on the main Fantasy-Faction site in a few months.

Good luck to all our entrants and thank you for taking the time to read the stories and vote! :)

@xiagan and @ScarletBea , is it too late to change my title to “Inheritance”?
It could be even be “Inheritance (Two Small Magics)” for continuity.
Or not.  :-\

really great stories, the voting was hard as usual but I think I decided well after rereading all stories.

Really good month of stories. I enjoyed every one.
Went for ones that packed an emotional punch and had a lot at stake.

Echoing @JMack here but yeah enjoyed every story
All voted up for the month, picked my two favourites, they held close to the theme and ticked my imagination

Right, voted. I'm being cruel this month and voting for only one person, because it's a story that clearly stands out as the best to me, but at least 4 or 5 others stand completely shoulder to shoulder for a second place, none distinguishing itself clearly.
I'll give them all quick reviews.

I have deliberated so much over this one!
There was one standout story for me, which has stuck in my head, struck an emotional chord and so that has my vote.
The second one was harder, I liked all the stories, but tried to decide this vote on what was still a small magic. I really enjoyed all these this month.

Time to start reading the stories, one week left to vote!

Voted! Really enjoyed the stories this month. This theme has to be one of my favourites. I had six that I was trying to choose between in the end, all really good. It was hard to select just two.

Congratulations @Jake Baelish!!!

Your story was quite nice, but I'm afraid this time I voted for @JMack and @Alex Hormann - Alex, I continue to really like your prose vs. poetry entries ;)

Congrats @Jake Baelish !! You were one of my very potential second choices, so I'll be sure to give you a review if you want one, but my vote went to @Carter this month!

Plenty of excellent tales, it was a hard choice. Thanks a lot everyone!

Congratulations @Jake Baelish

@OnlyOneHighlander got my vote.

@ScarletBea Thanks. Now I'm not spending half my weeks in poetry classes it's much easier to focus on good old prose

I loved your story @Jake Baelish. It really touched me, and it got my vote.

I was also the 1 vote for @ryanmcgowan. Ryan, I thought your story was fascinating for the world you hinted at, and I found the situation engaging. There may have been some stories that were somehow more “perfect”, but none more imaginative.

Great month, everyone!

And @Slaykomimi, I saw real progress in your story this month. Your main character was sympathetic, and in a gripping situation. Try to work out some of the English grammar challenges, continue to develop your story-telling, and I think you’ll be pleased with the results.

I loved better with bread!  @Jake Baelish
It was so touching and stuck with me all month. My other vote went to @OnlyOneHighlander after much deliberation.

This month was a bit of an experiment for me.  I let my editing be heavily led by an editing package as a test before deciding wether I want to invest in it. I felt that whilst it was technically ‘correct’ it lost a lot of feeling and human-ness in the edit. I’d be interested to see if my gut feeling is reflected in your opinions. (I know there was no hazard, or risk involved in this, but I liked the idea so went with it anyway! Even though as a story I was missing a true hook.)

Well this is pretty awesome to log in too! My first win! (And the first time I've won anything with my writing). I'm pretty elated tbh :)

Thanks so much @JMack and @Jenny HJ for your votes and kind words, I'm glad my story had to ability to move people in some way. Thanks to the others who voted for dear Granny Curie and lovely Pom, too  :)

@Nora glad to hear you liked it too, and yes I'd love any feedback you have to offer!

My first vote went once again to @OnlyOneHighlander for another story with writing that just absorbs me, I loved the feeling of being on a rocking ship and the story itself well gorgeously sweet. Showed what could be done with a really, really 'small magic' too  :)

My second vote went to @Alex Hormann. I thought the concept was  cool and led to a really clever use of his 'small magic' at the end and left me wanting to know how it all turned out.

Jenny, I enjoyed your story too, it's been a few weeks since I read them all but I do remember it being pretty quirky and fun. BTW, and I think Scarlet mentioned this in the other thread, but was HMRC a play on Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (a government dept in the UK)?

Congratulations at Everyone  :D

I voted for @Alex Hormann and for @Carter , but I enjoyed every story.
@JMack and @xiagan Thank You very much for the feedback, and to everyone who ever gave me feedback.
It is nice to see that I am developing my skills.

Well done @Jake Baelish !

I really loved your story. A great magical idea, multilayered characters and a satisfying finish. Congrats on your first win.

My other vote went to @Nora cause I'm a sucker for a good gum-shoe story. @Alex Hormann 's Sand was very good too and I nearly voted for it but I just felt it stopped before the end. Great ideas and well constructed world though.

Thanks to all those who voted for me.

Well done @Jake Baelish! Am proud to say you were one of my votes this month, and @Carter  was my other.

Thank you @JMack for the kind words and the vote  :)

I’d like to open a critique sub for this month if anyone else would be interested?

Congratulations Jake.  A deserved win and you got my vote.  My other went to Jenny HJ.  We had a take an the WI not too long ago, now HMRC.  Which particular British institution is someone going to address next, that's what I want to know!
