Title: [Oct 2016] - Corpses - Voting Thread
Post by: ScarletBea on November 02, 2016, 10:06:12 AM
It's time to vote on October's Writing Contest: Corpses.

We got 22 entries this month - wow!!!
Thanks to all of you for participating!

Please read through all of the entries in the submission thread and place your votes for your five favourite entries in this thread. You won't be able to see the vote breakdown until the vote closes, so spread the word for others to come and vote! We do ask that if you entered, to vote for someone else.

The key for the numbers of votes is this: 1-5 entries: 1 vote, 5-10 entries: 2 votes, 11-15 entries: 3 votes, 16-19: 4 votes, 20-25: 5 votes, 26+: 6 votes

Remember that the winning entry will be posted on the main Fantasy-Faction site in a few months.

Good luck to all our entrants and thank you for taking the time to read the stories and vote! :)

Note: now this month it seems to end on 2nd December, so an extra day, hehe
I can't change that once set, but I don't mind, since there are so many stories ;D

hrm.

ebook generation delayed!

our all-anonymous-author month blew up my script as the only "reliable" (and, i use that term very loosely) way to match story-to-author was by the author names.  i should have some time to fix it while i ride the train up to glendale this morning.

EDIT:

here we go!

kindle mobi:

Thanks for the docs, m3m and the crit template is very useful.

Been reading stories as they appeared, did re-read of ten this morning, had to be very hard-hearted and finally voted, at least we got five votes.  Congrats everyone who contributed,  that was a major effort.. Now the looooong wait for final results.  Good luck all.  8)

voted!

there was no controversy for me this time.  my top 2 (basically 'why isn't this published?!' and 'fantastic') tiers of stories numbered exactly 5.

the next tier ('great') was a massive swath of goodness -- wow.

overall, this has probably been the highest quality bag of stories i've ever seen on here.  i don't ever remember feeling such a strong "this story should be published" about anything we've had in previous contests.  holy cow.  it created a whole new voting tier at the top for me.

edit:  also, i have identified 9 authors that i feel strongly about it being their work.  2 of those i'm FOR SURE about.  gonna apply some math later and see how close i actually am.

Voted - and have come to the conclusion I have no idea who wrote what. At all. Hell, I'm not even sure which is mine at this stage. I mean, I think I wrote it, but it sort of sounds like someone else's now  ;D

You can't just say that and not tell us who you think wrote which! Haven't even started reading yet myself. Guessing is going to be so much fun!  ;D

That's pretty understandable. You've not been reading these contests for this long. I've been doing them for 2 years, still consider myself a pretty "recent" addition, and only one story jumped in my face (screaming "Jmack wroooote meeeee"), and a couple others felt familiar, but not in a way I could entirely pin point. Plus we have a LOT of newbies muddling the results here. I'd be impressed if people guessed correctly more than 5 stories, without using writing recognition softwares.

Man I was really struggling with where to put that 5th vote... so much to love in the stories here!!!!

To be honest, I think I only have 4 or 5 of the story authors figured out.

I think I got @Gem_Cutter @tebakutis and @Nora nailed, but there were two I felt like @Jmack could have written and I'm only 80% sure I got @m3mnoch figured out.  There's one story in particular who I REALLY want to know who wrote it...

I have list of níne names against stories but it may change although I'm fairly sure of a couple.
If anyone is willing to take a guess on which is their own through  PM just say so, that 's one way of discussing without influencing anyone else's vote or guess.
ETA I have a feeling the Raptorisauruses may have an entry in this month, I wonder ?????

Come on @Bradley Darewood tell us which one you really want to know the author of, so long as people refrain from going all critique-ey on it, that can't influence the voting by much.
AND, I've never said I wrote or would write anything for that month, so I'm very curious to see which story you think is mine!  :-X

@Jmack, you're predictable in a good way. You have great ideas and a great style that is unique enough to recognize (or so I damn hope haha)

@Lady_Ty, I think PMs are a great idea too.

m3m and Bradley we're still waiting on your list of fanatical admirations.

I voted myself, and cannot say I share everyone's enthusiasm. Only a few stories really caught my eyes this month, and even the one that had the best prose and inner beauty made me struggle with a little boredom in places. I was more impressed with the potions stories, or the breaking the fourth wall ones (damn that was a brilliant month).

btw, where are you, @OnlyOneHighlander !!! I want your stories!!  :'(
Title: Re: [Oct 2016] - Corpses - Voting Thread
Post by: J.R. Darewood on November 07, 2016, 05:22:15 AM

Well, I think there were certainly imperfections (in the weeks I've participated but also those in which I've lurked, usually my biggest concern is that I didn't feel a complete arc, which is understandably difficult to achieve given the word limits, the second concern usually being dialogue/cloudy character motivations revealed therein)...

...but I felt like many of the stories this month had strengths that were incredibly strong, even if they didn't rate high on every element, what they did well they did really really well and it made it exciting for me to read.

Personally I liked this month better than potions, but to be fair I'm more of a corpsey kinda guy so I thought the prompt was particularly fitting, providing an enticing, excitement-building element while being general enough to allow the creativity and flexibility necessary for great stories.

all you have to do is click "see the results".  they're all visible to everyone -- just not who-guessed-who.

well.  i can see who guessed who because i needed to be able to map that back to guess-edits.  but, in general, it's meant to be crowdsourced!  after all, we don't want to make assumptions on who DIDN'T guess who and have it give hints.

- *posts dumb question*

I think it's not too much if I say that not ALL guesses are wrong. ;)

or, that no two people guessed the same story . . .

as for mine, i had a couple that were 99% sure, a few that were 70% sure, and a whole passel that was 50% sure.  i would be completely flabbergasted if more than half of my 9 guesses turned out correct.

picture me giggling because you don't think i talk the same way i post . . .

for example --

just about anyone at work:  "how are you doing, chris?"
me:  "peachy keen!" or "awesome!" or "rad!"

visiting vp of disney:  "tell me what you found in your research."
me:  "omg -- it's so badass!"

my boss, a vp:  "when you write emails to other executives, please use capital letters."
me:  "no.  it's part of my style!"

yeah.  not kidding.  those are LITERAL examples.

warning -- nerd talk ahead!

for my fellow nerds in the group, my next project is to load up all the authors who've posted a story this year, and dumping them through this algorithm:

https://github.com/ashishbaghudana/stylometry

that is, i think that's what i'm going to do.  i might have to find a library (because i sure as heck don't have time to write my own!) with fancier n-gram support.

I'm very amused by what people think I wrote. Someone thinks I wrote Harry. That's a compliment because it was a good story, but if you study it : little girl gets what she wants. Scary guy is her pal. Bad guy gets what he deserves... Those aren't really my trademarks. That story is just too positive to be mine, hehe!

I'm surprised that things aren't more obvious for people on that regard. There are some things I'm the only one doing around here that should mark me out if I enter. I guess most people either don't mind and hence don't notice, or just didn't give it the thinking time required to add things up and file "XX" in the folder of "stuff only Nora thinks is cool".

Anyway, that doesn't mean I entered.

so, in case anyone was wondering, we've had 46 authors (not counting anonymous) take part in our writing club this year.

just sayin'.

edit:  also, jmack, tebakutis, and myself are the three who've entered every month.  lanko was SO CLOSE!

Bite me if you will, but this guessing game is making me realise how much I appreciate my work being associated with my name. It's not entirely a vanity thing, I also care about my characters and their archs, and don't entirely relish the idea that people associate it with other writers. They're my babies.
I mean, the whole point of Anonymous arose because people wanted to see if voting without knowing who we voted for altered our choices, and not 2 weeks in we're already tagging names to the stories, effectively defeating the original point. Not complaining, mind you, just stating that this exercise reinforced my desire to keep posting under my name.

... and not 2 weeks in we're already tagging names to the stories, effectively defeating the original point.

But we're not! Certainly there's a lot of doubt - or at least there should be...

For my part, I 1) hope people are voting on merit and not on cliquesmanship, and 2) hope they're ready to be surprised in some, most, or all cases, depending. I can tell you some people are way off in at least a few cases. As for me, I wasn't kidding when I said I haven't a clue. Your reputation for darkness and predilection for present tense makes you uniquely distinctive, just as my penchant for poetry does the same for me, but not reliably so, and not for everyone.

now that that list is getting populated I'm REALLY curious why you thought the person you thought wrote what you thought they wrote wrote the thing you thought based upon what you thought about the thing you thought they wrote and the things you thought about the person you thought wrote the thing you thought they wrote.

(Edit: not that anyone can answer that without swaying votes... but maybe when it's all done)

I think all of this is super fun, including the name guessing (even though I haven't a damned clue who any of you beautiful people are). If you're voting for someone's story because you think it may be someone you know, well then you're just doing it wrong and I curse you with, oh no...what's he gonna say...WRITER'S BLOCK!!! :o

But I think writers in general have too much integrity and honesty to stoop to those unimaginable lows, so we can safely assume that all is above board and will continue along the path of awesome. Hooray!

In my personal opinion, the anonymity of this contest is the beauty of it. If I had a vote, all of these contests would be anonymous, because it adds the fun element of surprise at the end. I bet more people are excitedly awaiting the end of this month's contest than any other. I also think that you'll see more writers hopping on board, because it can be a scary place coming in as a new name and trying to compete against you wily, old vets ;) Good luck to all!

First @Lordoftheword welcome to the contest, BUT please read this thread so you know some history and  which should allay your fears that we vote for names rather than quality of stories. Check it out all the way through. ;)

http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/monthly-writing-contest/anonymous-submission-9941/

The guessing is quite separate fun and NOT related to our choice of story. Most of those name to story guesses will probably be quite wrong, but if you keep entering  for a year we may just may be able to spot your style. ;D

This is going to be even better telling after voting closes why we thought what we thought and defending what we thought we thought when people say "How could you have thought I wrote that,  I always write in first personfuture perfecttenseepistolarystyle  and how could you even dream I would ever choose to write an epicheroicgrimdarkromancespaceopera?"

I'm enjoying the guessing and everything around it too. Not saying every month should be anonymous but maybe more often than once a year? But let's discuss that in another thread.

Nora, you will get the recognition for your story - just a few weeks later than normal (in case you submitted at all. Otherwise of course not).

Some minor stats:
A week in and already 12 voters! :)
One story seems to be a clear favorite. Curious if it will change as the month progresses.
From the 20 stories that got guesses, six got a right guess.
The story with the most votes is not among them.
Three stories will remain anonymous after the voting ends (if the authors don't change their mind).

Alright, I opened everything in Word and I'll keep that file open in my laptop until I've read them all.
There are 55 pages of story!!!
(I changed to A4 and 2cm margins, there were 63 pages initially)

I'll also use that for my comments, since there are no authors this time ;)
Title: Re: [Oct 2016] - Corpses - Voting Thread
Post by: Nora on November 08, 2016, 12:32:39 PM
I fear my comment was interpreted as stronger than I wanted it to be. I'm not saying we're actively voting for the names of those we think wrote the story, because my original point throughout the debate on whether we need anonymity for fairer judging was that we don't, I never believed we were voting for names. So ultimately it doesn't even matter.
When I say I'd like stories attached to my name, I also don't mean much by it, but I do think it makes a difference between being read while known and being read and having my work associated with someone else's style and later getting corrected.
I find it funny to see people tagging my name all over stuff I didn't write and would not write the way it was done. I'm just saying it's definitely not something I'd like to see repeated indefinitely.

Everyone is being very sly about having tremendous favourites and not saying which stories those are. I was wondering if we should do the first rounds of critiques before the names of the authors are released, or are people gonna burst with too much anticipation?

As for the guessing page on m3m's website, I find myself very stumped. Seriously! I don't feel like I can correctly pinpoint more than 2 stories!

Wow. I'm sorry to doubt your word m3m, but how is international shipping of a slim envelope of printed A4s coming up to US$140???
That's about the amount of shipping a 2kg box from Australia to the UK without warranty.

Here are the prices for sending a fat envelope, of half a kilo, from the UK to the US by Royal mail :

SO MUCH EXCITE!

also, i love how my name is attributed once each to three different stories.  me, eric, jmack, night_wrtr, lanko, nora -- all the regulars are scattered, overlapping everywhere.  i love it!

As for the guessing page on m3m's website, I find myself very stumped. Seriously! I don't feel like I can correctly pinpoint more than 2 stories!

heh.  i think you've just hit on why this is fun.

as i think about it, i wonder if folks who prefer a specific type of story will attribute an author who normally writes that kind of story to it.  meaning, even tho we're all trying to guess, there's still a strong taste factor at play.  we're separating taste from author.

which, i guess, should be obvious.  hrm.  so much for deep thoughts by m3mnoch.

anyhow, i think it's interesting in my own voting that for 2 of my 5 votes, i didn't even have a thumb-in-the-wind guess (much less an absolute one) as to who wrote it.  i'm SUPER-EXCITED to see who wrote those.

heh.  no worries.

that quote was from fedex.  it's probably the expediency.  wouldn't do to have the package get there in 3 weeks, right?  and, also, it includes 60 pages of printing.  so, not terribly slim.

funny enough, a super-fancy binding was only an extra $4.  and the difference between two day shipping and next week shipping was only, like, $8.

I've thought about anthologies before but having self pubbed an anthology and having done some editing and publishing for books at university, I know I won't be able to dedicate the time needed for this...

And sorry for the stats. Just realized that it tells some people more than intended.

I think I have 10 stories in here. That will be at max 15k words. That's a novelette length. Hm, not bad, specially since we have to create new characters, settings and system every new month and still have a word limit. And working with the main WIP. And reading 60 books.

During the Nightmare contest I thought about doing what Anonymous did in Potions and Corpses Pirates: continuing the next story with the previous characters, items and maybe a nemesis or antagonist, something like a pulp or serialized style.

Discarded the idea, but now I wonder as that would save a tremendous amount of time  ::). On the other hand, it's pretty good for creativity, like reading your next books with themes/situations/settings that can't have been used previously  ::)

meaning, that if you're one of the six people who've had someone guess their story, you know you're not winning?  pish-posh.  it's still early in the month and half the votes aren't in yet.  i'm sure they won't take anything to heart.  it's all fun and games in our little club and we love all our writers.

however, if it were me, i'd probably drop out of the forums, never to return.  i'm fragile like that.  thank goodness nobody has guessed my story yet.

. . . or have they?

I started off strong with my guesses, then the trail got cold.

"This could be X"
"No, that sentence definitely sounds like something X would write."
"You can't fool me!"
"OH! I see what you did there X!"
"Wait, no. No."
" :-/ "
"I need more than 5 votes."

Then you can read people's gratitude while pooping or something...

*blink*  *blink*

on a related topic, those of you following along on my stylometry exploits will be interested to know that java library i found yesterday turned out to be . . . um . . . kind of crappy.  (ba-dum-tsss)  while at the first, casual glance i noticed it had a few n-gram routines, however they were for producing text, not evaluating text.  after lame results, i dug deeper into the code and discovered text evaluations were basically done on "letters per paragraph".

yeah.

srsly.

and not even anything fun like "favorite letters per paragraph".  it's just a raw count.  which, of course, meant it matched each of us with about 25% of the total corpus i've assembled.  so very non-helpful.

and, speaking of letters, i've moved on to using r this morning for the statistical analysis.  probably where i should have started at the beginning.

Probably why I am perpetually surprised when people ... do what they always do  ;D I have an advanced Disbelief Suspension System, probably from my time with the military, and I divorce the work from the person pretty much completely.

If we do anonymous again, I could ask to state with the submission if a critique is wanted or not. This way you could critique away without giving out unwanted critiques.

Then you can read people's gratitude while pooping or something...

<Little does she know that every time I am on the forum, I am actually in the toilet pooping>

If I had a story submitted, I would critique my own story to put you off

Hypothetically assuming that I perhaps maybe might have written a story or poem for this month... When I maybe or maybe not re-read it, I identified like 1,000 things wrong with it that I wish I could change.

Interesting that there is only one story without any guesses at all.
I think I'm not revealing too much if I say that the author of that story is not somebody who has entered for the first time.

just make sure your name matches where it says "ff username" and fill in the name for your new author.  that's it.

i just looked and there's a guess with no ff username to it.  is that yours?  send me a pm and we'll get it fixed.

Oh, my bad, I misunderstood your sentence. I thought you meant someone had finally put in a guess for your story, and I've been waiting forever for someone to put in a guess for the story "memories", and thought that's what you meant, implying that story was yours.

I really think that having anonymous submissions has substantially improved the contest, and I think that it would be something to consider as permanent feature. When did we ever see this level of excitement before?

Also, I will honestly say that I am only human, and that if I ever find myself uncertain about two stories, I'll consider the person, maybe if even subconsciously. I'm sorry, but that's the truth. With anonymous submissions, however, I have nothing to go with but the quality of the story and its writing, so I count that as a big plus  :)

I think it's a bit early to say that. Maybe people are just excited because it's something new, just like when a new contest pops up there's like 10 pages of discussion in 2 days.

Oh, and the guessing game. So maybe it's not even the stories causing the excitement, but the mystery  ::)

Thirteen stories got right guesses so far.

From the thirteen stories that got temporary authors attributed by @m3mnoch (because of your guesses, not because he felt like it ;)), more than 2/3rds are attributed to the wrong author.
Title: Re: [Oct 2016] - Corpses - Voting Thread
Post by: Lanko on November 15, 2016, 12:13:34 PM
Wow, we're terrible at this  ::)

13 stories with right guesses. Also 13 attributed to someone, and only 4 or 5 are correct. Of those 13, there's one author with 3 attributions (Gem_Cutter) and two others with 2 (Jmack and Nora).

So taking out two from Gem and one from Jmack and Nora, there's just 9 unique authors out of 22 with attributions: Tebakutis, Rukaio_Alter, Gem_Cutter, Wakarimasen, Jmack, SugoiMe, Mr.J, Nora and Lady_Ty.
Among them, only 4 or 5 are correctly attributed. And the other 8 or 9 with a right guess are not attributed to anyone.

Considering the overwhelming amount of guesses for Tebakutis, Rukaio_Alter, Gem_Cutter and Mr.J, they most likely are the 4 correct guesses.
If there are 5, then there's one more between Wakarimasen, SugoiMe, Lady_Ty and one of the two stories on Jmack and Nora.

Since Xiagan's last update, there were 9 correct guesses, and from memory (I have a pretty good memory, but I should have taken screenshots. M3mnoch should obviously notify us  ::)), this were the new inclusions, in which 4 are correct:

Is it Really Graverobbing if it's for Science?: ArcaneArtsVelho and Jmack.
Navigator: Nora
The Bridge Battle: Tebakutis
Weincawnathun: Rukaio_Alter and Jmack
Where there's a will: Alex Hormann
Cú Sith: m3mnoch
The Raid: Bradley Darewood
Job Gone Wrong: night_wrtr and Bradley Darewood
Hoy Girl: Osahon
Hidden Beauty: Christallynnfairy
Harry: Jmack
Some Called It Freedom: Peat
Fashion Monsters: Gem_Cutter
The Soulspeaker: Lanko
The Grinning Man: Elfy
DRIN: Hedin appears as the latest entrance, but I'm 90% sure the new one here is Lordoftheword
The Unidentified Corpse of Stony River, 1922: NightWrite
A Song for the Dead: Lordoftheword
Pit of Forgiveness: Mr.J
Blink: Saraband
Affinity: shadowkat678 and Eclipse
Memories: Raptori, TOMunro and ScarletBea

4 of the new guesses above are correct. Now, which ones are they?  ::)

Mmmh... I'm less and less convinced by this guessing/anonymous thing.

You can definitely discount the one associated to my name, since it goes with the one story I criticised ahead of time (saying that while very well written and catchy, the plot is the sci-fi version of the film Gravity. Might be accidental, but I found that unfortunate).
I think Jmack writing Harry sounds definitely more likely to be correct. Features young people, is a bit dark yet finishes on a hopeful twist. Way more likely than being mine.
Peat's associated story also sounds pretty plausible to me, but I'm none too sure.

It's definitely cool to see some wonderful works attributed to my name. But you're all wrong! muahahahaa  ::)

I think many of you may be surprised! I was very happy with my first ever entry into this F-F Monthly Writing Contest, but I don't think I'll win. There are a few front-runners for me, and I'll have to use my single vote veeery carefully. (I've already voted, but it's just a placeholder until I finish the rest of the stories.) I'm really enjoying this!

I think once everyone gets used to my writing it'll be pretty obvious which story is mine (if we continue with this anonymous theme). I have a fairly consistent voice ... unless I'm hopped up on whiskey. Then things either get super sexy or characters start losing their heads  :'(

How does the breakdown of votes compare to the number of guesses for each story?

this is something on my list to look at after the voting is done.  i suspect there's not really that much of a correlation, but it might be fun to look at things like "votes vs. number of unique guesses" as well as "votes vs. number of correct guesses" and the like.

tho, honestly, like the general vote distribution, the small sample size of voters/guessers will make the data really, really noisy.

The Contest Detective is back. Let's make a concentrated post on the information we have to solve this case.

- The author of Memories is not a first timer.

- There are three first timers, and they are: shadowkat678, Lordoftheword and Crystallynnfairy.

- Two or three with a second submission: Captain of the Guard, Osahon and Bradley Darewood.

- Of the 16 remaining author spots, we have 9 with pretty much confirmed presence throughout discussions: m3mnoch, Jmack, night_wrtr, Nightwrite, Gem_Cutter, tebakutis, Alex Hormann, Mr.J and Rukaio_Alter.

- That leaves 7 author spots and we have exactly 7 people who commented or insinuated participation throughout the threads, but have Unconfirmed Status: Nora, Almighty Zael, Saraband, Wakarimasen, SugoiMe, Raptori and Elfy. However, there are some likes by TOMunro on some posts, he might be an old timer silent lurker! And Lady_Ty also has entered contests in the past!

- Yes, Lanko is NOT in this contest  :'(
He said that previously, but people still attributed to him five different stories. While honored to be attributed some very good stories, he is also sad that his word is held in such low regard  ::)

- Random observations:
- shadowkat678 suggested her story might feature a corpse being controlled like a marionette.
- Nightwrite might have a light/comical entry.
- Jmack said his idea was initially inspired by a previous story written by Nora.
- Elfy asked if he could write a Frankenstein-like story. Xiagan replied a no, but who knows!
- Nora claims she is not the author of Harry and Navigator.
- Lordoftheword claims he is not the author of DRIN, A Song for the Dead and Cú Sith.
- Cú Sith is a Scottish mythological hound.
- Gem_Cutter previously wrote only poems to work on his prose skills. Could he have changed his mind? Some people think he did!

Current guess breakdown by author:

1) 10 guesses - Gem_Cutter
2) 09 guesses - Jmack
3) 08 guesses - Tebakutis, Nora
4) 07 guesses - Rukaio_Alter
5) 06 guesses- SugoiMe, BradleyDarewood, night_wrtr, m3mnoch
6) 05 guesses - Lanko, Mr.J
7) 04 guesses - ArcaneArtsVelho, Wakarimasen, Alex Hormann, NightWrite
8 ) 03 guesses- Raptori, Osahon, Elfy, Lordoftheword
9) 02 guesses - Saraband, shadowkat678, Crystallynnfairy, Lady_Ty
10)01 guess - Almighty Zael, Captain of the Guard, WarbossTae, Hedin, Henry Dale, Peat, TOMunro

Considering the guesses for Rukaio_Alter, Gem_Cutter, Tebakutis and Mr.J are correct, Lanko's admission he is not participating, Nora's and Lordoftheword claims, we can eliminate new entries since the last update from Xiagan and have 4 correct guesses:

Weincawnathun: Jmack
Where there's a will: Alex Hormann
Cú Sith: m3mnoch
The Raid: Bradley Darewood
Hoy Girl: Osahon
Hidden Beauty: Crystallynnfairy
Harry: Jmack
Some Called It Freedom: Peat
The Grinning Man: Elfy
The Unidentified Corpse of Stony River, 1922: NightWrite
Blink: Saraband
Affinity: shadowkat678
Memories: Raptori and TOMunro

4 out of these 14 guesses are correct.

Previously there were 29 guesses, now reduced to 14, more than half! And if you are a writer and one of those is your story, then it goes down to 4 guesses out of 13. Maybe less if you are confident on thinking "That's definitely not the style of that person!"

Nice post, Lanko!

Any reason you didn't mention that one story was attributed to me? ;)
Frankly, I'm curious why only one person thought to do this. You know that I participated in the past and wouldn't an anonymous month be the perfect place for me to make a comeback?

Not saying I wrote a story, of course. ;D

Agreed. Even if I haven't been around much, mostly due to the last year for me being...draining. I feel like a walking corpse myself right now, but I'm rereading the stories right now, and they're really brightening my bad day. If in a slightly morbid way, being about death and stuff.

I haven't cast any guesses and I don't think I will either. I'm too unsure to find guessing amusing. Too much risk to go astray kills my drive to guess, but I'm enjoying seeing people play around a lot.
However next time anonymous shows up, I hope it won't be compulsory. The two things I dislike about it is the lack of freedom to edit (not happy with my formatting, would have done more edits if I hadn't felt like a pest bothering anonymous), and the fact that I've been sitting for weeks now on story material I want reviews and advice on, and the moment I publish them, people will immediately know what my story is. It's been pretty frustrating, waiting it out just so I don't spoil the fun for others.
I hope people will keep the option of signing off their work if they want to.

Nahhh, I'm pretty sure you all's guess for the Gem Cutter is wrong and mine is right... :)
Well, that was quite a giveaway! Remember there are 3 stories (Bridge Battle and both poems) attributed to him, and he only appears there... except for the lonely guess at Fashion Monsters. So that's yours!  ;D
[/quote]

OMG @Lanko your second long post is pretty genius.  I think I need to refer to you as Sherlock from now on. I seriously love that long post of yours, it's amazing.

I only meant to say I didn't think he wrote "The Bridge Battle" specifically, though I'm dying to find out who did!!!  I'm super curious about that one. I feel fairly certain about who wrote 3 of the stories, and Gem Cutter is one of them!

I will say that I'm pretty flattered by the people who mistakenly attributed better writers than I to the story I actually wrote.  I wonder, @m3mnoch if it might be possible to color code the guesses so that they're linked to the guesser?  Or put it in a table?  Seeing who guessed what is almost as exciting as knowing who actually wrote the thing...

Don't worry @Nora I guessed which is your story anyway right off the bat... :) okay maybe I entered two guesses...

I'm with you on the wanting to revise thing.  I re-read mine and some of my mistakes made me cringe.  So awful.  (That said it does make sense to have something consistent so that everyone is reading the same thing regardless of when they get to it).  I really don't think voluntary anonymity would produce the same fun effect, but what if it was only anonymous for like 2 weeks, and people could guess away, and then the second week the authors got revealed?  Would that be a good compromise?

(Here I am talking above my station, making suggestions when I never enter the competition-- and probably won't be able to much in the future due to time constraints and the fact that word limits and rules and prompts and whatnot make the possibility that I'll have an idea that fits and time to write it a very rare coincidence-- for whatever reason with prompts and word limits I have a much easier time writing outside of the fantasy genre-- fantasy+prompts+word limits = dry AF.)

Anyway, I'm just throwing that idea out there as an outsider....

I think it's a test of patience, and I also believe anonymous contests will keep people involved and possibly bring more people into the contest (if that appeals to anyone  ;) ). As I've said before, I might not have even joined in the fun this month if it hadn't been anonymous. It can be a tad intimidating stepping into a forum of amazing writers and trying to assert yourself.

BUT, I do think the 2 week compromise is a fantastic idea @Bradley Darewood - first two weeks try and read the stories and place your votes, and then the following 2 weeks we can revel in the excitement of seeing if we guessed correctly as well as provide our critiques for the authors starving for that feedback.

Also @Lanko - that Sherlock Holmes breakdown was incredible. Keep being awesome!  ;D

Gosh, I really hope we're not going to go over that debate again and make anonymous submission a permanent, compulsory thing.
Anonymous submission is always possible, if you feel better without having your name associated to you. I'd be glad to see a lot of anonymous subs on a permanent basis, with people who don't mind (or need) signing off their work can do so (as in, if you re-use characters or delve back into old plots, what's the point of anonymity?). But I think a lot of the fun in this guessing game is that it's new. I doubt we'd be this excited every month all year round.

I'm not feeling impatient about anything related to this contest, I'm feeling impatient about the 4,000 words I wrote on top of the 1,500 ones and have been wishing for review and advice on, but can't publish anywhere without spoiling the fun for either everyone, or everyone with writing group access.

I'm with Nora in saying that I don't think anonymous submissions shouldn't be made a permanent/compulsory thing. It's fun this month, since it's new and exciting, but I can guarantee after a while that we'd probably get a bit bored of it. Plus it makes it a bit awkward for anyone who wants to discuss their entry without waiting for the reveal.*

Maybe if we did it once every 4/5 months or so (with an option to opt out), it'd work, but I really don't think a permanent thing is the way to do it.

*Although that's not really a problem for me since everyone more or less seems able to guess mine straight off the bat.

Yeah the novelty value will disappear, but little of the enjoyment comes from sheer novelty. Most of it comes from the suspense, and from the shared speculation and analysis which everyone has been enjoying. None of that would go away, even if it was a regular thing.

The only thing it restricts is people who want others to discuss their work (and are grumpy at having to wait a month while the rest of us enjoy ourselves before they can bask in people's attention  :P ), and even that will still be able to happen after the reveal. If that's really such a deal-breaker for some, Bradley's suggestion would be a decent compromise imo. Not sure that an option to opt out would make sense, though I guess it wouldn't be a big deal.

I like @Bradley Darewood 's suggestion also. That narrows the 30 day wait down to around 14 days. (Lets be honest, maybe its a 60 day wait for those who read submissions as they are posted!) Although, I am sure @Anonymous would not mind to do a few edits if needed. There is a full month to write and submit changes, which is why it can be dangerous to read them before the submissions are over.

I can go either way on this, but definitely would like to see Anon subs more often. I like seeing the stories judged by the words on the page, instead of the name attached to it. Especially for the new members to the contest club this month because it puts them on equal footing with old timers. Who wrote what? Who knows! Will will find out soon!

Apparently didn't add this to the rules of the Anonymous month. Sorry!

Forgot to add that if I'm going to post them as they come every contestant would have two jokers to send me edits and I'll replace them in the submission.
Doesn't help if you want to do lots of minor edits but should catch the big typos.

Oh, and let's discuss the rest in the anonymous submission topic and not here. Easier to find. :)

@Lanko, we don't know how many of our writers from way back have come back in  just for fun or because xia and Bea deliberately encouraged them to make it harder.  ;)  I would have done that if I'd thought of it in time  :P

They wouldn't count as new, but some may not have posted in months. For example I did wonder if Doc Chill was in with one story because it had a slight touch of his, but pretty sure he's too busy.

It always does so. The writers are struggling on the last days of their newest monthly submission or their own work, the readers who have voted and talked have said what they had to... Things always quiet down before the end of the month, unless there is a big debate starting in the thread.
Guessing can hardly change that.

Curses! My plan to take credit for what is clearly the best story of the month has been foiled!

To make it up to Nora, I insist that everyone go and vote for that story, which is clearly hers, immediately. And if she claims that it isn't her story, don't pay it any attention, that's just part of her impish sense of fun. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to my important job of writing very serious stories that aren't at all like IIRGIIFS.

It's pretty fucking obvious I wrote Grave Robbing. It's not like I don't have a reputation for amazing stories full of banter, dialogue in capital letters, and cheerful endings that'll put a smile on your lips.

Duh.

How long do I need to participate here, for people to pick up on my unique comedic sense and craft?

Despite saying I'm not in the contest I actually gained more votes and even majority in a story  :o

Maybe you guys figured it was all a ploy...

Or maybe I wanted you to think it was a ploy and to think I'm in...

 ::)

oh!  also, i just finished up the last pass at all the stories using this mathy stuff.  i can tell you that you did not pop up as an author.

or did you?!?

duhn-duhn-DUHHHHHNNNNNNNNnnnnnn!!

okey dokey.

so, instead of writing my 1750 entry on my holiday, i procrastinated by writing a bunch of code (combination of r, python, and bash) to dig through all of the stories/authors submitted during 2016 so far.

so, the information i can share without really giving anything away is the authors that bubbled up as having entries in the contest.

medium-to-high confidence:
- Gem_Cutter
- jauerbach
- WarbossTae
- m3mnoch
- Blackthorn
- Nora
- Saraband
- tebakutis
- Hedin
- Henry Dale
- night_wrtr
- Mr.J
- Venandiaer
- Rukaio_Alter
- Jmack
- SJBudd

medium-to-low confidence:
- wakarimasen
- Nerf
- Alex Hormann
- ArcaneArtsVelho
- Captain of the Guard
- Bradley Darewood
- coldbloodedsouth
- SugoiMe
- Doctor Chill

you'll notice there are more authors than stories.  that basically reflects that about 1/3 of the stories were questionably attributed to multiple people.  i suspect a lot of the uncertainty comes from either new authors or authors who haven't submitted much this year -- because the analysis works best with as large a corpus (writing samples) as possible.

some interesting bits:
- about half the stories matched one author heavily, with maybe one or two distant second authors.
- a couple stories (the grinning man, for example) HEAVILY matched a BUNCH of author writing styles.
- a couple stories (fashion monsters, for example) didn't hardly match anyone's.  (so, surprise!  it's a good candidate for a first-time entrant.)
- a few people with large corpuses matched with tons of stories as a group (me, jmack, tebakutis, rukaio)
- a few people with large corpuses matched with only one or no stories (nora, lanko, aav)
- a few people with relatively small corpuses matched strongly with lots of stories (gem_cutter, blackthorn, nerf)

if you're on either list above and want to know what story the program attributed to you, send me a private message!

@LightRunner , @Captain of the Guard and @Alex Hormann said they were in.

If anyone still want to throw more guesses, specially for the newbies and need some material:

- Lightrunner, Captain of the Guard, Osahon have posted stories in the previous contest.
- @shadowkat678  have a few stories on the Work to be Critiqued thread.
- @Lordoftheword has already submitted on 1750 and you can download the excerpt for his book Librarian Gladiator (medieval-like Hunger Games with only 4 people - but whoever gets killed first has the entire bloodline wiped out - it's actually pretty interesting).
- If @TOMunro is in, he has posted previously, also has books out there...
- Only one we really don't have anything is @Crystallynnfairy.

Not sure if you noticed, but voting ends this Thursday around 11am UK time!

So basically there are 3 days left! And 22 stories! That's a lot of stories ;D

Thanks for the plug Lanko :) my excerpt is a little deceiving, but yes it does come off as a little Hunger Games-ish. Truth be told, Tournament of Hearts diverts very quickly from the initial choosing of the four and the plot thickens quite dramatically. Currently working on Book 2 actually, and its slowly eating my soul. I think I need a break...

And no one has guessed my story correctly thus far, but I'm honoured to see that some fantastic writers have been attributed to my work. Makes me feel all warm and squishy inside  ;D

So excited! Only 3 days left!!

Oh, also, like Crystal, I also have a writing sample available. It's a lot darker than the other stuff I've put up, so it might help more with guesses. I don't know. Maybe. I don't even know how far back my other junk is in the critique thread. Eh. Thought it would be a good idea to put it up before voting closes, but I forgot to tell people. Got the idea Lanko was talking about material for first timers.

It's a fanfic, which I think is alright. It falls under the fantasy category since it's a Harry Potter extension. Pretty angsty, and darker than other stuff I put up, which might help with guesses? About 2k words. Also in 2nd pov as an experiment, which could throw you off. But better than nothing? Right?

(Also, shamelessly asking for feedback if you do head over. You could help us both out. You all AND me.  ;) )

This was a really interesting collection of stories, and there were certainly more than five I found entertaining. To cull it down, I had to be strict on the rules, which meant not voting for several stories I enjoyed overall because they didn't quite fit the guidelines. However, that did let me narrow my votes to five!

Of my five stories, there were two that stood head and shoulders above the rest, but I loved that we had such strong participation and variety. I'm also going to add a few guesses to m3mnoch's list ... there's one story where I'm 100% confident I know the author (so if I'm wrong, I'll be shocked) and several others where I'm close.

I'm looking forward to finding out who wrote what ... at least, from those who choose to reveal themselves.

Just added my story guesses and checked the result, and I'm flattered to see I've been named as the possible author of FIVE different stories! Heh. Seeing people's guesses is cool, though I'm guessing the "by X" at the edge is just the current favorite guess (based the number of votes) and not a fact?

It's the name with the majority of guesses - it also took me a while to get, hehe

2 votes currently separate first and second, and then it's 1 vote inbetween for the next bunch of 4 or 5, so anything can still change!!!
Your vote matters ;D

yup.  whichever name gets the plurality of guesses gets tagged as the author.

Can't wait  for all the results, this has seemed to stretch out so long because we began speculating as they were written, not just waiting to vote. Thanks again to everyone for so many top stories. Because of the name game I actually read most of them about three times and most of my guesses are probably still wrong. There was a huge hint lately and now I'm certain one of my guesses is way out but because I'd decided otherwise haven't changed it.

are waiting for the 1st to FINALLY see the voting and who wrote what =)
I know I do =)

Or maybe everyone's computer broke but the apple store was closed/booked until well after thanksgiving and they had work and couldn't get it fixed.... or maybe that's just me....

:)  I feel you, 2 months is *agonizingly* long!!!

so, instead of writing my 1750 entry on my holiday, i procrastinated by writing a bunch of code (combination of r, python, and bash) to dig through all of the stories/authors submitted during 2016 so far.

Wait there were rules?
Haha, but in all seriousness, maybe I'm not rule-oriented but now I'm super curious which guidelines they violated...

Less of a violation (you can write what you want!) and more of a "spirit of". Xiagan suggested that the stories should involve corpses, but not zombies or undead or other supernatural creatures, since that's what everyone would have done otherwise. The way I read that, the story had to involve a perfectly mundane corpse that was important to the story. So I definitely gave bonus points to the stories that found a strong way to incorporate a non-supernatural corpse and still really grab me.

Also, because there were so many stories and so many *good* stories, this also allowed me to make a decision, thankfully. But YMMV. :)

Pretty much what I did as well. There were some very well-written, but in some corpses felt like a sidenote for the theme than having importance to the story. Those received some extra points from me, but everyone votes as they like, of course.

coy?  ha!

if they're de-anonymized, then we can offer congrats!

dude -- @TOMunro -- you're story was my absolute favorite.  loved it.  you NEED to come back and enter more contests.

i also voted for:  @Bradley Darewood, @tebakutis, @Rukaio_Alter, and the anonymous person who wrote Blink.  (tho, i suspect i know who that is)

this is the first time i've ever scored a story as "superb".  i even had to create a new tier for it.

the "great" tier held my other four votes.

and, finally, the "good" tier had about half of the rest of the stories.  it was an insane month for quality.

@TOMunro - Congratulations! Absolutely fantastic story! Happy to see that Where there is a will took home the honours. Can't wait to see more from you :)

@m3mnoch & @xiagan - voted for your stories as well. Bravo! You're both hilarious and masterful tale-weavers. Had a feeling xiagan wrote one of them after reading some of his posts on the forums. ^^

And I'm happy with my first showing with Harry. Figured I'd be somewhere up there because I was quite proud of it, but after reading the rest I knew I wasn't quite going to come out on top. Great work everyone!!!
While I did write a story, I didn't finish it on time. :(

hahaha you totally tricked me in your REVEAL post! There was a spoiler in the spoiler that I totally didn't see, you tricky SOB  ;D

So @Rukaio_Alter - fantastic work my friend. Apparently everyone knew that you'd written the story but me   :P

Don't worry, that'll change in a couple of months at most...  ;)

coy?  ha!

if they're de-anonymized, then we can offer congrats!

dude -- @TOMunro -- you're story was my absolute favorite.  loved it.  you NEED to come back and enter more contests.

i also voted for:  @Bradley Darewood, @tebakutis, @Rukaio_Alter, and the anonymous person who wrote Blink.  (tho, i suspect i know who that is)

this is the first time i've ever scored a story as "superb".  i even had to create a new tier for it.

the "great" tier held my other four votes.

and, finally, the "good" tier had about half of the rest of the stories.  it was an insane month for quality.

I voted for you this month, and since I only voted for 3 people, I bid you take it as as much of a compliment as you will (self bloated fellow writer rolling by...)
I think you've done some tremendous progress on your writing since your first subs here. Not saying you wrote crap, but your characterisation and mastery of the short format is much better now, your cast in this story felt very alive and with a complex back story I could have read a lot more about. Also the use of the physical corpse was very well done, so you had all my points this month!  ;)

Oh @Nora - you mentioned a little while back (can't find the post) that you wondered how the author of Harry felt knowing that his/her work was being attributed to you.

Well it felt great! After looking at some of your past work, it was an ego boost for me. Not that I need it...  :o

Haha, you're the one giving me an ego boost, getting an ego boost from my own work! I'm a classic middle of the pack runner, often sharing the bottom rung of the podium in this contest, so you should aim to surpass me soon, there is a God Emperor of the Contest Crown up for stealing.  8)
I've really enjoyed the darker themes and new possibilities the contest has let me explore, with a surprising back up, given how many people here are not into the stuff I dig.
I was surprised people mistook our style, but then again you're new, and I read your story with complete ease, so that must mean we have some similarities.
My furious point all along was not on style, but on plot. Your story is too god-damned positive and nice for me to have written it on a subject like corpses.  :P

I really enjoyed your story btw. The only reason I didn't give you a vote was that I voted by strict use of corpses. If I didn't, I would have had too many stories on my hands to sort though. I voted only for run-of-the-mill dead bodies, but your was clearly fantastic (and oddly good natured!), so I truly enjoyed it, but didn't give my vote.
Aww, makes me sound unjustifiably cruel to my own eyes...  :-[

Not at all! We needed some kind of way to sort through all the awesome work that was produced last month, and my supernatural corpse probably didn't work in my favour for the traditionalists, which is absolutely fine. ^^ I'm glad you enjoyed it!

And yes, my stories can often be light-hearted, but every once in a while I can slip into the darkness and BOOM!...my parents and friends are worried about me when they read my work hahaha. Funny how many non-writers automatically assume that you're having personal issues when you're writing about dark subject matter. It's usually the opposite for me!

And I'm glad my little tale was an easy read. I aim for the Stephen King model - simplicity and an emphasis on story. My characters often need a bit of work, if I'm to be honest. But that'll come with time and practice :)

I wanna know the one person who was crazy enough to vote for me. I know I originally did a place hold vote for my own story while I was reading through and deciding the last story to vote for, but I changed it...so who voted for that? *confuzzled*

Let's just leave King's name out of this conversation before I start dry-heaving, sweat abundantly, turn blotched-purple, grow tusks and puke lava.

This entire convo feels like how I am with James Patterson. I read one Steven King book, and it...I didn't really like it too much. He strayed more into fantasy instead of horror, so that might be why being out of his zone, but it was really cliche, predictable, and really flat character wise.

King is the J. R. Ward of Horror. He write pulp frisson with darkity dark undertones for the broad public to enjoy and think they're being complex by reading his work. He's the king of mainstream horror, and the fact that he floods that section irks me.

I don't know much about that since I'm too wimpy for horror, but yeah. Sounding more like Patterson by the moment. I liked his maximum ride series while in middle school, but now I see him EVERYWHERE in the thriller area

Thankyou to everybody for their congratulations and for their votes, I'm so glad you liked "Where there's a ill."  I'm only just in from work to pick up all the messages, so apologies for being the silent lurker even through the declaration of results.

I thought it was a fantastic month with some wonderfully imaginative and well written entries and I really wasn;t expecting to win.

I voted for
The Soulspeaker
Blink
Hoy Girl
Harry and
Memories

All of which I thought had a better chance than mine.  In the time I have been watching and contributing stories, the quality has been rising inexorably.

Also, congrats to Xiagan for the fiendishly intoxicating device of an anonymous month.

Congrats @TOMunro -- well deserved!!!!!!

There were so many good stories this month!  I really liked the one Stephen King wrote :) haha @Nora the way you feel about King is the way I feel about Sanderson :)  That said @Lordoftheword Harry was undisputably masterful.  I was guessing that one would actually win!!!! I also really enjoyed your heist story @shadowkat678 !  There were too many great stories this month, tho I didn't vote for it.

One of my favorites was The Grinning Man-- I thought it was really well done!!!  (I also thought you wrote it, @The Gem Cutter -- damn you for not writing poetry!!!)  My very favorite of the month was Weincawnathun by @m3mnoch with it's wildly entertaining well-executed dialogue though @Saraband 's brilliant Cu Sith with it's rich mythology and subtle darkness a close second.  Speaking of execution, i couldn't help but vote for "Gravity Part 2" by @tebakutis because it was just deliciously tense and absolutely thrilling.

I didn't vote for The Bridge Battle but it was driving me crazy trying to figure out who wrote it.  I thought it was some undeniably exciting, excellent action writing that I thought was completely awesome-- tho I had some critiques I could add to the critique thread. What it did well it did really really well tho, which made me really want to know the author! I just had too many to vote for!

I just realized I never said who all I voted for! Ah! XD

Bridge Battle, Blink, Harry, Where There's a Will, and The Soul Speaker were mine. It was really hard to pick though. I definitely agree on that part.
