Title: [Oct 2014] - Abandoned places - Discussion Thread
Post by: xiagan on October 01, 2014, 05:03:10 PM
This month it's your job to get the inspiration for the story from one of the following pictures.
All are abandoned (or not? *adds creaky sound*) places with a history that brings humans back from time to time - or makes them (who? tell me!) rediscover it (and it's secrets).

Each has a special atmosphere - try to grab it and make the best you can (in up to 1500 words. ;)).

Rules:

1. This can be prose or a poem.
2. The story must be inspired by one of the pictures and preferably (partly) take place in one of them.
3. Ignore this rule, it's not really here.
4. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
5. Poetry must be 100-500 words long.
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the images, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys next to the 'youtube' symbol: (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/Themes/inferno_20a/images/bbc/spoiler.gif)

Entry will close November 1st 2014 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.*

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/%28oct-2014%29-abandoned-places/%28oct-2014%29-abandoned-places-submission-thread/new/#new).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

*I seem to never be home around the end of month, so please excuse if I'm not always on time (which is hard in an international contest with all the time zones anyways. ;))

I had one of this pictures in my image folder for years, as a reference for style and atmosphere, but never really created an actual background for it. So this seems to be the perfect opportunity to do something with it.

But a limit of 1500 words seems really short, even for a short story. Looking at those from previous contests, it seems quite challenging to put any kind of narrative in such few words.
Why was that number established as the upper limit? To make it easier on the reviewers to read a whole dozen of them?

Exactly, it is a challenge. A lot of writers find it difficult to leave unnecessary stuff out and I know from personal experience that it is really hard to delete paragraphs (or even more) from a story even when it really helps the story. This is a good exercise to concentrate yourself on the really important stuff and even helps you with editing if the story is longer at first.

Yep, that's another reason. If you look at the last contest, we had 12 voters - which, quite frankly, isn't a lot. If the stories were 3000 words I guess there wouldn't be any voters besides the writers left.

The third reason is that everybody is busy as hell and writing 1500 words needs, even with a little editing, less time than 3000 words. ;)

Glad to have you join in! :)

Does anyone know what inspired the second picture? It reminds me of the old Incan baths on the way to Machu Picchu.

I just really, *really*, love all the images! :D
(nope, still not inspiring me to write, hehe - not a writer)

Probably because I've been playing too much instead of writing, but I was thinking it reminded me of Destiny.

Seems more like the Aztec capital city Tenochtitlan, which was build on artificial islands and channels in the middle of a lake.

I've been to Mesa Verde. It's quite amazing to look at and imagine their lifestyle.

Brilliant! Love this theme and those pictures, now let's see if I can do it justice. :) Anybody have any ideas yet?

I've got one around the second picture, but I'm not sure I can pull it off.

Elfy, I'm also looking at the second picture 'the passage'.  This month is going to be all about finding time though, fingers crossed

The fourth image, Cavern City, has given me one or two ideas. Hope I can find the time and put something together.

I have an idea for the second image (although it's more going off the general 'feel' and setting rather than the specifics), and it'll actually be good character-practice for my idea for the anthology; now the trick, to actually write it. *pokes brain*

Fifth gives me a good sci-fi/fantasy feel. Gonna actually try this month.

I'm liking the cavern city image too M. G. Boronha, I'll be curious to see what you do with it if you get the time. :)

How much help is considered sportsman-like? Can we have two or three people look over it, spellchecking only, or should it be done entirely by ourselves?

I'll put my two cents in on that Yora. I regularly have one or two people look over my pieces before I post them. Self editing is quite difficult and you're bound to miss the occasional typo and grammatical or punctuation error. As long as the actual writing is all your own I don't think anyone has an issue with someone else making sure all the i's are dotted and the t's crossed.

I've got an idea for the first image. Now to see if I can complete it earlier than bang on the deadline ;D

Half of October is already over, keep your stories coming!
Don't make the submission thread another abandoned place. ;)

One week left to go! Could you tell me if you plan to submit? I'm already a bit nervous...

At the moment we have an automatic winner! ;)

I actually have a story written. It's just a matter of editing a little and posting it, xiagan.

Lady Life is getting in the way of things, again. I'll see if I can come up with a story this weekend, but I'm not that optimistic this time  :-\

I've written something but I'm not that happy with it.  Hopefully will find the time to redo it a bit but will post it before the end of the month.

Sadly, I got swamped by school. So, no story from me this month (and ugh, I really liked my idea....)

Mines up. Hopefullly some others can get theirs in before the end of the month. There were some great images, it was rather hard to pick which one to use. Just an idea, I know it's not in the submission guidelines, but it may be helpful for readers if the authors say which picture they based the story on.

Regrettably, I won't be taking part after all. Got too much stuff to do, and wasn't that happy about my idea.

Still looking forward to read what everyone else has come up with  ;)

At least you're not quite at the Douglas Adams level, who used to like the whooshing sound deadlines made as they sped past him.
