[OCT 2013] The Steel Remains by Richard K. Morgan
« on: August 23, 2013, 07:44:43 PM »
Our dark fantasy for October will be The Steel Remains (A Land Fit for Heroes #1) by Richard K. Morgan

A dark lord will rise. Such is the prophecy that dogs Ringil Eskiath—Gil, for short—a washed-up mercenary and onetime war hero whose cynicism is surpassed only by the speed of his sword. Gil is estranged from his aristocratic family, but when his mother enlists his help in freeing a cousin sold into slavery, Gil sets out to track her down. But it soon becomes apparent that more is at stake than the fate of one young woman. Grim sorceries are awakening in the land. Some speak in whispers of the return of the Aldrain, a race of widely feared, cruel yet beautiful demons. Now Gil and two old comrades are all that stand in the way of a prophecy whose fulfillment will drown an entire world in blood. But with heroes like these, the cure is likely to be worse than the disease.

I might. My library only has the audiobook version, so I might try that out. Seems like a really interesting book.

I'm in.
I'm curious to see if I enjoy this as much as I enjoyed Altered Carbon.  :)

Me too! I'm also kind of hoping that it doesn't have some of the plot issues that came up for Altered Carbon. But even with those, everyone still enjoyed the Altered Carbon, so imagine reading a book with all the pros of Altered Carbon, but with some of the plot issues addressed. I am really hoping that's what we get with this one. Read and find out I guess :)

Definitely in for this one. I (shamefully) never finished Altered Carbon due to starting up my blog that month and getting a bit overrun with things, so I'm very excited to read this. It's been on my TBR for such a long time, and it actually feels like I while since I really read this kind of fantasy - despite it being a subgenre I love.  :)

I think I'll declare myself in for this as well. I'm in the same TBR boat - I bought the Kindle version aaaaages ago, and read a couple of chapters to figure out if I'd like it. I liked it. ;-)

So, yeah. I'm in. Take that, tiny corner of the TBR pile!

I read this just over a year ago and gave it a glowing (& fairly spoiler-free) review on my blog:

I won't be re-reading it - I have too much else to catch up on, and Republic of Thieves to pounce on as soon as it's out - but I'll be interested to see what you make of it. It pushes the limits of my squeamishness, which is why I have yet to attempt the sequel, though it's on my bookshelf...

I'm trying to download it to my kindle, but Overdrive (the online library my library supports) has the audiobook in an .odm file. I can't email the book to my kindle, and it's pretty frustrating. All the google searches for it produce nothing.

Any of you know how it works? If not, I'm passing up this month.

You can see if this works (the directions for from Overdrive to Kindle is towards the bottom):

I've ordered it (paper copy) and had one of those situations where the site crashes halfway through your order. So I'm hoping it arrives.  :-\

I'm in. Downloaded this from the library a few months ago and this gives me a good reason to finally read it. I'm new to the Fantasy Faction forum and book club, but I look forward to participating.
