Who is Reading Along in November? :)
« on: October 24, 2011, 02:41:03 PM »

My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit - we do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluable, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England. Now I'm a Detective Constable and a trainee wizard, the first apprentice in fifty years, and my world has become somewhat more complicated: nests of vampires in Purley, negotiating a truce between the warring god and goddess of the Thames, and digging up graves in Covent Garden . . . and there's something festering at the heart of the city I love, a malicious vengeful spirit that takes ordinary Londoners and twists them into grotesque mannequins to act out its drama of violence and despair. The spirit of riot and rebellion has awakened in the city, and it's falling to me to bring order out of chaos - or die trying.

"Witty, well plotted, vividly written and addictively readable." (Lisa Tuttle THE TIMES )

"Aaronovitch gives us a glimpse of a fascinating and fantastical underbelly to the capital that feels entirely believable. Those familiar with the city will enjoy picturing the chaotic events unfold, while those less familiar will receive an accurate and entertaining geography lesson. Magical, mysterious and mesmerising, Rivers of London will have you spellbound." (Alice Wybrew TOTAL SCI FI )

Reading will commence on November 1st 2011

Must admit that this isn't a book I'd normally pick up, however - the reviews all seem very, very positive so I'm going to give it a shot :) Who is with me!? :D

Hey, when did this get all decided???  :-\ Or have I just been sleepy and missed a few posts?

Well I'm not in for two reasons:

1) The book blurb just hasn't grabbed me.  Fantastical London - well Gaiman and Mieville have already been and pissed all over the fantastical world of London with their very strong brand of doggy pee.  You are gonna have to have uber strong dog pee to displace them from fantastical London.  And wizards living in the modern world underground?  YAWN.  Rowling, Grossman et al have also marked that field very strongly.  Maybe I'm just jaded, but this doesn't seem to be very original or new - please someone correct me if I am being a cynical bar steward.

2) A MASSIVE to read pile.  Partly my fault for stupidly deciding to read all of Wheel of Time within a year, and partly this damn forum for recommending me so many new series to check out!

I just read a review of this, that should go up in the near future on the main site.  Sound like a good read. :)  I shall have to see if I can find a copy. :)

I really enjoyed this book - It's not really Neverwhere-ish at all, it's closer in theme to the Dresden Files but obviously much more english. I won't be re-reading I don't think but I'll happily chat along. For any fence-sitters I will say that I read it in a day, so it won't take much time out of your lives!

I loved this book (despite some flaws - I enjoyed it so I didn't care so much!) Then my husband nicked it off me and then Hobbit nicked it. They loved it too.

Was quite weird
Spoiler for Hiden:
Reading the riot scenes as riots were happening in London.
My tongue has been in my cheek for so long, I've eroded a new mouth.

It's 14 chapters but will probably be a much quicker read than A Shadow in Summer, especially if it is funny. :)
