Title: [Nov 2018] - Ships - Discussion Thread
Post by: xiagan on November 01, 2018, 08:46:32 AM
Image Prompt: Ships

We haven't done an image prompt in about a year, so it's high time for one. :)
Below you'll find six pictures of/with ships. Please choose at least one of those six as the base for your story. This means that the story should be inspired by the pic and the content of the image should be a scene from your story.

Here are the images:

1

2
(https://i.imgur.com/nM58AG5.jpg)

3

4
(https://i.imgur.com/2yqJiNK.jpg)

5
(https://i.imgur.com/T1uM0Qf.jpg)

6
(https://i.imgur.com/DAJh9VZ.jpg)

Those are resized, if you click and select show image/open image in new tab, it should be way bigger (those are all wallpapers).

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. The story has to be inspired by one of the pictures above and the content of the image should be a scene in your story.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-750 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys under the B.
Bonus rule: We consider voting in a contest you're taking part in a given. Others take time and effort to read the stories - you should do the same. A small community like ours lives from reciprocity and this contest needs stories as much as votes.

If you want to submit your story anonymously you can do so by sending it in a personal message to @xiagan.

Entry will close November 30th/December 1st, 2018 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.
Submitting a story counts as published. The author retains all rights to their work.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/(nov-2018)-image-prompt-ships/(nov-2018)-ships-submission-thread/new/#new).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

Thats so´mething new to me, but I like the idea of getting visual inspiration.
Do we need to announce the photo we picked or should it make sense from the story itself? can we maybe even pick more than one?

Yes, you should say which image you picked, and it's better to restrict yourself to just one.

Good references Skip!

I'm already working on an idea for #2 but we'll see. With my total lack of motivation these days, nothing is guaranteed.

#s 1 and 5 have my interest.
Opening lines.

#1: “You’re mad!!”
#5: “He would have preferred a ship for killing, but the little boat was better for this night’s work.”

What about this ship??

Is it intentional that all our ships are fantasy exclusively? :p

I like it. My fantasy includes spaceships.

Sorry Nora, but you can turn any of the official images into a SF story - I know you can ;D

(who says that the whirlpool in photo 1 isn't in a weird planet, and the spaceship turned into a water-based ship in order to get through and reach the planet's centre?)

I won't though, I'm neck deep in fantasy horror right now. But for photo one... I guess I can't scifi it because I know it's from Pirates of the Caribbean? Can't separate it from its scene. But the idea of accessing a lower level through isking your ship down a sinkhole it quite good. Maybe find Atlantis down there.

I lied. It’s not 1 or 5, it’s 3.
A character introduced herself to me on the drive to work today.

Such good images. I've got some thoughts for number 2.

Number 5 makes me think of the Nilfgaardian fleet at the end of Witcher 3.

I wanted to like 1 and 5... A’s ideas just spring off the page for those two.
But 3 brings a favourite song to mind that now won’t get out of my head after 24 hours. So a combination inspiration looks like it is on the cards.
Now I just have to work out how to tie the two ideas together!

I’ve found that firewalls and content blocking at work will block the pictures. Plus, you might try a desktop if you’re looking via phone. Just switch up what firewall and device you’re using and see what happens.

@JMack, then we can look forward to her first chapter/ prologue.

These pictures certainly do get the brain working differently.  I ended up following a thought proscess that would have taken me waaay too far from the prompt. So have shelved it for another month where maybe it might fit better.  Hey it might even let me add more Ents...

So back to the cabin and charts I go to try and start again.

Ohhh I hadn’t actually gone there...
Though reflecting on the idea that seems a bit violent.  I mean it’s like a ship of flesh and bones....
Suddenly Robin Hobb comes to mind.

I'm really loving the thought processes! :D

I wonder how we can incorporate it in the contest, one month - "see the bones of the story", as it was...

@ScarletBea I honestly don’t think I could explain the flesh and bones of my ideas. I think I have a rough idea,  I start and then it all changes. As for character twists; never planned. They are a surprise to me as much as the reader at first, then I have to go back and deal with the necessary changes in the earlier section that now need to happen because of them!  I’m finding it much easier to do that in a short story than when 60k words through my WIP, a new character appears and I now need to go change chapter 2. ( again)

I’m a total pantser. I try to plan- and it stops my writing dead in the water.

I think this months entry is done...  just need to sit on it for a few days to spot the errors I know will be there when I have fresh eyes.

So when you brits say you're a pantser, you're talking about underpants?

He he. Yeah  but said like that it sounds funny. ‘ hanging on by the seat of your underpants’ doesn’t quite have the same ring.  Normally though yes- and specifically boys underwear if we are going to fill in the detail.

I have a question, does the scene need to be exactly like on the pictures shown or can we make changes? like the daytime, buildup of the ships, weather, etc.

I know in some cases one of the count up details is the whole point of the picture but lets say, can picture 3 be in the night or picture 2 on a les tropical island, etc.

Yes, you can change details - just be inspired by the general idea of the picture you choose.

Try to look why you can´t find a plot, I drafted about 3 different stories this month before I felt like writing the one I posted. Don´t worry, it will work, I am looking forward to read from you.

That's cool! I only need to work on the last 500 words for mine, and maybe try to shift everything to past tense, but I also have a class friday that I need to study for and it's my only day off, so any extra time saturday will be a life saver.

I wrote most of my final 500 words in my notebook today, so I'll have to seriously beg for the extra saturday-till-late-evening time please! Hopefully everyone seems last minute this month.
I'll take my computer to work tomorrow to spread the work out.

Finally got something up for the month.  Bit surprised to have managed even that much as I really seemed to struggle this time around.  I might see if I can do a little tweaking here and there still mind but mostly just glad to have it up.
