Title: [Nov 2015] - Mighty Beasts - Voting Thread
Post by: ScarletBea on December 01, 2015, 06:56:25 PM
It's time to vote on November's Writing Contest: Mighty Beasts

We got 13 entries this month.

Thanks to all of you for participating - we've been having quite a lot of entries this year, and even in the months where it seems there will be less, you come up with the goods at the last minute :D (once again, we had 4 entries on the last day hehe)

Please read through all of the entries in the submission thread and place your votes for your three favourite entries in this thread. You won't be able to see the vote breakdown until the vote closes, so spread the word for others to come and vote! We do ask that if you entered, to vote for someone else.

The key for the numbers of votes is this: 1-5 entries: 1 vote, 5-10 entries: 2 votes, 11-15 entries: 3 votes, 16-19: 4 votes, 20-25: 5 votes, 26+: 6 votes

Remember that the winning entry will be posted on the main Fantasy-Faction site in a few months.

Good luck to all our entrants and thank you for taking the time to read the stories and vote! :)

I just re-read mine and found at least 1 typo. Ah well. Funny how you can't see errors until something is submitted.

Voted!

You people write too many good stories. Every month I find it difficult to choose. I wanted to vote for far more than three, simply due to quality, but ultimately I went with the three that had the most subjective appeal.

I have to read and vote in the next week, I won't have time after that.

And apparently my powers have disappeared, despite being a mod here :( I can no longer see the votes and the number of voters and all those things I could see last month.
Some wicked witch has it in for me >:(

Voted (already)! Great stories, as always!

Now I can focus on writing my Young Love story and reading Nation (I really need to pick up the pace on that one). Well actually there's still a few more things I need to do first, but then, in a day or so, I'm going to be all over those two. I promise.  :)

Finally read and voted. Was a tough choice. One I voted for I really liked but has bad flaws - you'll get a whipping in critics - but still liked too much to not vote for it, but then I have two tied for 4th position but we only get 3 votes... tsss.
Yeah, tough month.

3 (random, not in order) stories left that I must read today and vote.
I already have 3 I *really really* want to vote for, and 2 I really want to vote for... argh.
You guys make things always so difficult ;D

Yep, they were all quite different, but most really were top-notch for me :)
And those that had a lower score were mostly for small things, like me not knowing that was an ending (ending abruptly), or not caring much about the characters.

Well ours barely had a character at all, and it ends abruptly. Plus the beast is kinda tacked on to the end instead of central to the story... so if you're in trouble, we're screwed! Not really sure we should have submitted it in the end really.

As usual I haven't even started reading them yet...  :-[

Great opening line. In fact, strong prose all the way through. Nice, flowing sentences. Strong voice. I had to go through some of the author’s posts to identify who they were as it was great quality and I didn’t recognise the name so much. Thoroughly depressing atmosphere in the house. Nice graphic chicken decapitation, though a missing d on toppled broke the sentence. Couple of the descriptions could have been a little less flowery but done the same job.
i.e. A sandy haired scrubby thing, white as chalk with a bulging skeleton seeping through his thin skin
could have been A sandy haired scrubby thing, his skeleton straining through chalky white skin.
There were a few nuts like this that could have been tightened, but in general that was a solidly built story (if a bit dour for my taste).

@m3mnoch (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40419)

ooo… a picture…
Nice to see we’re eschewing starting our stories with names. Opening sentence felt a bit like the sap was snapping, which disjointed me a bit right at the start.
I liked the pacing but sometimes there was a little repetition within a few sentences; snow, bear that sort of thing.  Enjoyed the humanity the author brought to their beast, its sorrow on its discovery. It was a nice concept. Not sure a face can ripple with dread though… slacken? Tense? Don’t think it needed Adax to run at the end, I went from thinking he was worried and hurrying to thinking he was terrified and fleeing.

@tebakutis (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=31262)

A name in the first paragraph. For some reason that’s really sticking out for me now. I’m probably developing a sort of phobia. Which is a shame as I loved almost everything else about that opening paragraph. Apart from the fact that the second paragraph should have been part of the first. Bit of “corridor” repetition as we went on. Good sense of drama and emergency.  Nice to see a little diversity making it to the writing comp. Dialogue wasn’t bad, but a little predictable. Whole thing had a kind of Neon Genesis/ Pacific Rim vibe to it. Very enjoyable.

@Nora (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40237)

nice opening – would have swapped “a too dangerous one to keep around” to “just one too dangerous to keep around” to read easier, might just be personal preference though.
A visual cue when swapping from story to dialogue would have been handy, but mostly I  made the transitions without too much fuss. I feel like the world was wonderfully imagined, it seems a shame for the author to have felt it was sub par. And it had a dragon. Everyone loves a dragon. Bit of repetition of “claws” in the fight. Really like this one, and didn’t even need the music for it.

@wakarimasen (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40242)
All hail Abbathor! Long live D&D…

@Jmack (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=37094)
Book of Job was a bit of a revelation (ahhh biblical puns eh?)
Something about the start felt weaker than the author’s usual efforts. Possibly it could have been dropped entirely, put us in with the sailor discovering the coffin?
I liked the ethereal quality to the world after the storm, very dreamlike. “Flat as a threshing floor” was nice. Liked the way we learn about the King’s past as a sailor and how it changes our initial opinion of the man. The dialogue mostly left me a little cold, apart from when she laments that the priestess used to be a friend, that seemed more real.

@Henry (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=8080) Dale

Opening sentence was nice but felt a little mechanical. I’d have been happier just knowing “Thu tied clipped her carabiner to the harness that ran up the long neck of her cloud eater.” I get the same sense of height and the same curiosity about both situation and beast from that. The explanation about what she did in different weathers was nice, but left me a bit confused about what the weather was at the time. Liked the culture that was evoked, felt well fleshed out, but that third para (round the fire) seemed to serve little purpose plot wise.

@Rukaio_Alter (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40087)

I liked all of this. The first sentence could have gone, but the dialogue was amusing and free flowing. Find it hard to point to something to helpfully crit. Better description of mind bending chaos perhaps?
Bloody Kevin eh?

@Elfy (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1153)

Was the second sentence necessary? In general there was quite a lot of repetition of Jack’s name. Something about this one made me stumble a bit, I just couldn’t engage with it. It felt like much of it was unnecessary. The conversation between Jack and Alison could have been one line almost. The action against the bunyip had introspection on weapon type crammed into a space which supposedly had him scrambling to load a spear. That broke the pace for me. It was a nice, refreshing setting though and it would be great to delve deeper into the fantastical nature of Aboriginal legends.

@night_wrtr (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40254)
Not sure you can crawl to your feet. Name in first sentence (cuthulu’s knackers I’m becoming obsessed with that). Second few sentences could be paired down a bit, I got completely lost in “dead or dying and the other half ran as fast and as far away as they could”.  The shorter sentences were much stronger, gave a better sense of vezz. I liked the “no one to tell” black humour.  The action parts were snappier but didn’t need all those paragraph breaks. Built good tension toward the end.

@poppa fred

Felt a little expositionary. Some of the dialogue was unneeded, getting things to eat and what have you. It diffused the pace so there was not much sense of impeding, species threatening, extinction traumas. The serpent beast came and went without much fuss, seemed odd. Would have liked to have that as more of the focus rather than the meal in the canteen for instance. Perhaps telling us about his daughter at the start would have helped develop some bond with the Cap?

@ArcaneArtsVelho (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40090)

Liked the first para as a whole, but “blood flecked spit” might have been a more economic use of language and the repetition of hands was noticeable. His sudden recovery seemed unlikely, not sure even terror can motivate through that level of physical exhaustion. +1 for Dragon. Love Dragons. Liked the dialogue, the Dragon seemed suitably calm and unfussed.

@Raptori (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=38840)

Refreshing format. Nice punchy delivery, but not sure every para break was needed. Had a Lovecraftian flavour to it. Liked “Once you see the curtain move, it stands out like a signal fire.” For the sense of dread it implied I the watcher, subtle touches like that are really nice. Made me think of the bird depicted in the Nazca lines.

I can't complain with my critic. You're right on all your points, and the second Claws could easily have been changed for Talons if only I'd spotted it. Nice one.  :P
I'm glad you liked the world, since it was purely discovery writing, and the whole thing sort of burst to life by itself, so I struggle following my own ideas in places.

Response in spoilers for those who prefer not to see it before voting:
I really like the thought of dropping the whole first section.
The "after the flood" story is really the more interesting to me, and lots of ideas about the Leviathan had to be compressed down.

Thank you!

Thanks waka! Appreciate your crit greatly.

My thoughts:
Good job not using a name in the opening. In fact, unless I've overlooked, no name reference until the last sentence! +1

I enjoyed the beast spin on this. It went in a direction I wasn't expecting. The exchange with Abbathor was interesting, but I wanted it to be longer. That is my only real feedback I think. I know you said you were swamped in your entry, but it felt like only part of the story and not the whole peice.

The ending was cool when the Scourge is named and we have our beast. Fun twist on the topic.

So yeah, wish it were longer.

Darn, that was so so hard to vote, another great month.  I had to kind of invent a criteria to narrow down further to just 3 from so many I wanted to vote for and have enjoyed. Mighty Beasts indeed and as I hadn't read all the WiP thread have just enjoyed that. At least having voted so late it's not long for the results.
Thank you all, especially as this was NaNoWriMo month as well.

i totally knew ra would win.  his story was great.  congrats, man!

i voted for not only @Rukaio_Alter (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40087), but also henry.  my odd one this time was my vote for @Raptori (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=38840) & @Saurus (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40290)

this was my first time reading the stories totally blind -- meaning without author names on the ebook and without peeking throughout the month.  it was fun trying to guess which story went with which author.  for example, i would have sworn nora wrote cloud eaters.  when i actually clicked my votes, there was lots of "oh!  that's fun!" when i discovered who wrote what.  i only guessed 3 or 4 of them correctly  ra's being one of them.

^This is why I didn't vote for you Rukaio, but I loved your story, many congratulations.

Your sense of humour is hard to resist and I was almost certain you would win, so I decided to vote for others that I'd enjoyed as well.  Like m3m I read without knowing the authors but I can guess several of you now. ;)

I voted for @m3mnoch (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40419), Henry Dale and Poppa Fred this time. It was a fascinating theme, thoroughly enjoyed all the stories, brought out some wonderful creations ;D.

Congrats Rukaio!
This was a fun topic. Enjoyed all the stories this month. I voted for Jmack, Henry and Rukaio. Great work all.

Why would Henry get a shredding from me? I'm lost... I voted for his story though. It's the one I really hesitated for, because a few things really gritted and didn't work, but I really liked it still.  ::)

Also voted for Rukaio, hardly a crazy move, that. Congrats man, your story managed to have a pleasant twist at the end, great job!

@ArcaneArtsVelho (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40090) had my third vote this time.

Big thanks Jmack, you were such a rebel by liking my story this month! I knew it was going to be a weird failure, but your appreciation was heart felt, and proof that while one can't please everybody all the time, one can still find an audience.

One I voted for I really liked but has bad flaws - you'll get a whipping in critics - but still liked too much to not vote for it,

I thought you might be going for Henry's  climbing techniques  ;D ;D

Oh! And you're absolutely correct. The entire story would never happen like this if she had an once of sense in the organization of her beast's climbing set up - she still could fall, but not like she did.
It was confusing.
I also found some fault with the ending, in its delivery, but overall liked the idea too much to not vote.
Lashing to come later!  :P

I have to admit, I'm kinda surprised that everyone had apparently already guessed I would win this round, because I was the furthest thing from sure about the results. There were a lot of really good entries. Considering how many jokes I make about my own ego, I think it's fairly ironic that I had no idea people liked my entry so much.

My dodgy instincts aside though, thanks a ton to everyone who voted for me and/or considered voting for me. In fact, thanks to everyone who voted and entered period. Like I said, this was a really good round with a lot of great stories. My personal favourites were Elfy's and ArcaneArtsVelho's, but it was good stuff all round.

Still, what a great way to start the year off, with my third contest win here. Now I just need one more to take the current win record and then I can once more declare myself as the GOD EMPEROR OF THE WRITING CONTEST!!!

(Come on, you all knew that joke was coming.)

Well, I had been saying I don't care all that much about winning the monthly contest; just want to write well and please some folks, blah blah blah blah.

But no.

@Rukaio_Alter (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40087) went and laid down the gauntlet. So I have to out do him.
Maybe Young Love will do it, but I can no longer impact that.
It will have to be 4th Wall.

It's on, RA.
