Unconventional Dragons

Hildegunst von Mythenmetz by Walter Moers, author of The City of Dreaming Books

If you hear "Dragon" you immediately have one or more images in your head. Terrific, huge, breathing fire, cunning, hoarding gold, etc... This month we want you to write about another dragon or dragons. Those that are not like dragons normally are. Whatever that may mean.

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. An unconventional dragon must play a major role in the story
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-750 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys under the B.
Bonus rule: We consider voting in a contest you're taking part in a given. Others take time and effort to read the stories - you should do the same. A small community like ours lives from reciprocity and this contest needs stories as much as votes.

If you want so submit your story anonymously you can do so by sending it in a personal message to @xiagan.

Entry will close May 31st/June 1st, 2020 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.
Submitting a story counts as published. The author retains all rights to their work.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/(may-2020)-unconventional-dragons/(may-2020)-unconventional-dragons-submission-thread/new/#new).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

I feel another Kian, Goldie and Grandad adventure coming on 🤔

Are serial stories allowed?

Sure, we've had some of those in the past.
You'll be losing the surprise element, though, but that's not really mandatory.

Can it be

Rand Al'Thor ;D

A fantastical element is required. In the end, voters will decide if your story met the theme or not. We had some good stories with zero votes in the past because people felt the theme wasn't present enough.

check the spoiler ;)

Ooo. Lots of space to work. I'm slightly worried about pushing the definition of 'dragon', but we'll see how it goes.

I'm in! Found this one more challenging than last month's theme but I'm satisfied with how it turned out. And welcome to the newest writers. :)

I just wrote a rough draft of a kids story by hand and going to type it up. I'll probably do a few edits before I post it.

A bit last minute but I just got down an outline and will be writing and submitting tomorrow. Been a while; wanted to jump back in a few times but couldn't settle on an idea, even on topics I liked.

This one I'm happy with. Hopefully can become a regular again. Look forward to reading this months entries  :)

Yes, 9, hurrah! :D

Is there anyone doing their finishing touches, or can I lock the topic and start the voting?

This theme is the best possible as far as I'm concerned and have been reading carefully over the last couple of weeks.

BUT I DO NOT KNOW HOW I CAN POSSIBLY VOTE

My notes say Wonderful, Excellent, OMG, YES YES YES, Magical, Beautiful, Just Perfect  all over the place.
However much people complain Dragons are old hat etc, they are truly diverse beings. You are all Dragon Champions and have shown proof here. Thank  you.

Me too! You are a treasure, @Lady Ty, be careful no dragon gets you for its hoard. ;)

Who says dragons are old hat? Point these people out to us, so we can "re-educate" them in the error of their ways ;)

"Come not between the dragon and his wrath" W Shakespeare

Just by coincidence, I re-read the excellent Cordwainer Smith SF short story "The Game of Rat and Dragon" just last month. It manages to combine two of my favourite real and imagined animals in one (no, not rats).
