Title: May 2018] - Magic and Technology - Voting Thread
Post by: ScarletBea on June 05, 2018, 06:45:08 PM
It's time to vote on the May Writing Contest: "Magic and Technology"

Once again, we got 7 entries - thanks to all who participated.

Please read through all of the entries in the submission thread and place your votes for your two favourite entries in this thread. You won't be able to see the vote breakdown until the vote closes, so spread the word for others to come and vote! We do ask that if you entered, to vote for someone else.

The key for the numbers of votes is this: 1-5 entries: 1 vote, 5-10 entries: 2 votes, 11-15 entries: 3 votes, 16-19: 4 votes, 20-25: 5 votes, 26+: 6 votes

Remember that the winning entry will be posted on the main Fantasy-Faction site in a few months.

Good luck to all our entrants and thank you for taking the time to read the stories and vote! :)

We are learning to live without polls, right?  ::)
So please send your votes via Personal Message to me and I will consolidate them all manually.
And don't worry, your secret is safe ;)

Here's the list of all stories:

DEADLINE = 1 JULY

So, just got finished reading all those brilliant short stories. And there were two that really stood out to me (one in particular was a stunning read!). So I've cast my votes and good luck to all.

I realised too that I haven't posted much since I first signed up here, but have become something of a lurker as I've been growing as a writer.

I recently got into writing short stories, something I haven't done in years, and realised what a brilliant way to practice this section is. I've read back a few stories from previous months, and enjoyed what I read. Particular mention goes to Jmack's Monsoon Dragon, I loved that! (but then I'm a sucker for a gay love story, however brief).

I have my own story in the works for this month's Fire Theme and hope to have it up before long.

That's great, @Jake Baelish!

People who participate regularly will confirm that this is a great way for them to grow as writers - I'll let @JMack share his story :)

I like that sticker!! Only 3 of us voted? Looks like the turn out of an off-year US Congressional race

I've been too busy to read anything, and when I have had the time I've been exhausted. I don't see myself submitting for Fire this month. Lot of things going on with me right now.

I prioritized adherence to the theme, strength of characterization, and prose.

I can say that a person voted in the meantime and did it ;) but who knows who might vote next, and tie them again? 8)

You have no idea how frustrating  this is being at 9.00am on Monday, coming to check here and realizing  you are still only at noon in UK and having to wait another 6-7 hours to see results.  ::)  Good luck everyone  ;D

ScarletBea, just me being impatient and I didn't even have a story in there. Appreciate what you and Xia do, and he has even less time to read now. ;)

Here are the results!

The Forbidden - Bradley Darewood --> 8
First Contact - The Gem Cutter --> 7
The Orchetype - Jmack --> 3
Against The Lightning - Alex Hormann --> 2
Exhumation - Carter --> 2
Fallen City - bdcharles --> 1
So many worlds to conquer - OnlyOneHighlander --> 1

Yay @Bradley Darewood, I believe it's your first win?
I voted for the top 2, but I could easily have voted for Highlander's story too, I really enjoyed that one too.

Congratulations, @Bradley Darewood so glad you got a story entered, don't stop now. You got my vote gladly, but in spite of the gods' names it didn't click with me until the motto hit me on the head.  ;D

@JMack you have become truly versatile, my other vote went to your cheeky twist and fun story.

I'm still trying to see what "Animus incons ulendo liber" means... I tried splitting the words differently, reading them backwards, even checking if it was latin!
I bet it's something really obvious

Congratulations Bradley!

My first vote went to Gem, so glad he got close. I really liked the confidence of both characters, but especially the wizard; I loved how the story was framed by the image of this withered old man coming and going, juxtaposed with what he does toward the end. Really incredible!

Well, @OnlyOneHighlander, you got my vote anyway.  8)
I also voted for @The Gem Cutter.
My challenge with Bradley’s story was only that I didn’t feel it fit the theme exactly. I’m still quite happy with it as the winner. A really nice story with great atmosphere.

WOOWWWWWWWW!!!! I CANT BELIEVE I WON ONE!!!!! Yeah I am speechless... (but I was also asleep) I really didn't think I was ever going to win one of these.  I'm blown away.

Thanks for the votes and the congrats everyone!  I feel kinda bad that I won on one where I turned things in late tho... if only I had won on one of the times where I turned stuff in on time!

@JMack I think we had different impressions of the theme b/c I almost voted for yours (haha it's a pattern I vote for you in 99% of these) but I felt it was kinda off theme since it was about fantasy in a high-tech setting instead of technology in a fantasy setting. As usual, you had a fantastic voice, and I thought you did the best job of any of us pulling off a full arc in 1500 words. It was really a strong piece.

@The Gem Cutter  i voted for yours and @Carter 's they were both great pieces! I was really torn b/c I also really liked @OnlyOneHighlander 's piece and I couldn't decide which to vote for-- I wanted 3 votes (and maybe a 4th to give to Jmack).

Anyway @ScarletBea are we still doing the thing where the winner opens a critique thread for @D_Bates (and others) to throw some critiques on? (I mention you b/c I honestly don't think we could pull off a critique thread on our won without you, man)

So when I read the theme, I immediately had two reactions. The first was "Gandalf vs. The Empire" - who'd win?The second was a high-handed scoff AS IF Sci-Fi stuff could EVER overcome Fantasy!
But many others seemed confused by the theme and I couldn't see why. So do tell...

I think the issue I had was that I couldn't see a means of doing an alien invasion in 1500 words, so I veered towards the technology and fantasy living side by side. And in my mind, technology and magic do very much the same thing, outside of one coming from the will and the other coming from a device, so I couldn't see a way of incorporating them into the same world where it wouldn't feel like they were the same thing, just one is done with a wave of the hand and the other with the press of a button.

In any case, I've been pretty engrossed in my own stuff as of late so I'm missing entries. I did have a concept for this month surrounding wizards casting a portal to summon forth the worst creation in all the universe, because their capital's shield is about to break due to a swam metallic bugs they've been using as slave labour have gone rogue and are about to annihilate them. The twist being that the thing that comes through the portal is those very bugs. But meh.

I'd also had ambitions of following on with April's Auskbert story in the same serial vein as your clockwork keep pieces, but the magic and technology theme shot that in the foot even before the initial entry was completely rejected by everyone :p.
