Title: [May 2017] - Music - Discussion Thread
Post by: xiagan on April 30, 2017, 10:05:43 PM
Music

Music plays a huge part in our lives and so it's no wonder that it has its part in fantasy too.
There are countless ways in which to include it. As a song to set the mood or as a part of your world building (see the famous example above). As the integral theme of the story (and it's magic) like in Pratchett's Soul Music. As something your MC is very good at like Kvothe in Name of the Wind, or many other ways, small or story defining.

This month we want you to write a short story in which music plays a significant part in your world building, your character's life or your plot.

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. The story must contain some kind of musical element.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-750 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a major overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys next to the 'youtube' symbol.

If you want so submit your story anonymously you can do so by choosing 'post anonymously' while posting it (see here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/monthly-writing-contest/anonymous-posting-for-writing-contest-submissions/) how it works) or sending it in a personal message to @xiagan.

Entry will close May 31th/June 1st, 2017 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.
Submitting a story counts as published. The author retains all rights to their work.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/(may-2017)/(may-2017)-music-submission-thread/msg170359/?boardseen#new).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

Heck yeah!
And it's not even officially May.
I will call this @xiagan's birthday present to us all.
When he intended that or not.  ;D

Think that's @xiagan's Birthday present to you in particular. Expecting words and your own accompanying music -all original.  And a video of you singing/playing it  ;D ;D ;D

Just wondering... came up with an idea and started writing, and if (IF) I submit something, I noticed due to the setting and various other reasons of what I have started, it might have some swearing/ strong imagery. (Not going the pretty music route). Anyway, would I just need to maybe add something at the top of the entry if it does ending up being as such?

Yes, don't worry about including it.
Just do as you say, a little warning information at the top (outside the spoiler tags) for those who prefer not to read it :)

I've just (this morning) finished re-reading The Vagrant where the song is an integral part of combat with Gamma's singing sword "The Malice"

Also Teresa Frohock's writing in the Los Nefilim novellas and The Broken Road (and Miserere too I think) make a lot of use of magic as a key element in spell casting - I think she likened it once to a sort of empowered Gregorian chant.

For myself, I'm just glad that success in my working life has depended on qualifications and skills other than the ability to sing/hold a note/read music -  it is a language in which I am functionally illiterate.   That might curtail my contribution this month!

I am the exact same. I consume a lot of music, with very weird and wild ranging tastes, but I don't know the first thing about music or singing, and generally don't end up friends with musicians or singers. I feel slightly awkward when people I know pull out an instrument or start singing.
I have nothing to say to them besides "that was cool/good/impressive/whatev". If I didn't really enjoy it, then I don't know what to say that would be constructive criticism, because I can't give any, and if it comes to taste, there is nothing to do... So yeah, I see musically oriented people as a breed of their own, like lawyers or programmers or poets, doing stuff that goes way over my head. I'm a visual arts sorta person. If I can see it I can give a more or less educated opinion on it.
But I can deeply enjoy what they do. I just enjoy music more on its own, detached from its producers, just like I'm not keen on knowing more about authors.

Yeah. Don't tag me in your sweary fantasy rap stories please.  However, big kudos if you fit some Lionel Ritchie lyrics into your contribution.

I fell in love with Tolkien's song-battle contest between Sauron/Thu and Finrod Felagund in the Lay of Leithian, which I paste here for those who might be interested. It is grimdark, and not the light, airy stuff of the Hobbit.

I love that the contestants weave metaphors of the world into their songs, for better and for worse. The mention of the Noldor elves greatest evil, the slaying of their kin, comes back to haunt poor Finrod here, who ironically, had nothing to do with it and actually tried to stop it.

The set up: Finrod and 10 companions are helping Beren reach Angband, the equivalent of Mordor, and are magically disguised to resemble orcs. But Sauron/Thu has discovered there's something not right, and seeks to unmask what that is.

The poem begins with Sauron, who:

"He chanted a song of wizardry,
of piercing, opening, of treachery,
revealing, uncovering, betraying

Suddenly Finrod there a-swaying
sang in answer a song of staying,
resisting, battling against power,
of secrets kept, strength like a tower,
and trust unbroken, freedom, escape;
of changing and of shifting shape,
of snares eluded, broken traps,
the prison opening, the chain that snaps.

Backwards and forwards swayed their song.
Reeling and foundering, as ever more strong
Thû's chanting swelled, Felagund fought,
and all the magic and might he brought
of Elvenesse into his words.
Softly in the gloom they heard the birds
singing afar in Nargothrond,
the sighing of the sea beyond,
beyond the western world, on sand,
on sand of pearls in Elvenland.

Then the gloom gathered: darkness growing
in Eldamar, the red blood flowing
beside the sea, where Noldor slew
the Foamriders, and stealing drew
their white ships with their white sails
from lamplit havens the wind wails.

The wolf howls. The ravens flee.
The ice mutters in the mouths of the Sea.
The captives sad in Angband mourn.
Thunder rumbles, the fires burn,
a vast smoke gushes out, a moan
and Finrod swoons before the throne.

Yet not all unavailing were
the spells of Felagund; for Thû
neither their names nor purpose knew.

These much he pondered and bethought,
and in their woeful chains them sought,
and threatened all with dreadful death,
if one would not with traitor's breath
reveal this knowledge. Wolves should come
and slow devour them one by one
before the others' eyes, and last
should one alone be left aghast,
then in a place of horror, hung
with anguish should his limbs be wrung,
in the bowels of the earth be slow
endlessly, cruelly, put to woe
and torment, till he all declared.
Even as he threatened, so it fared.

From time to time in the eyeless dark
two eyes would grow, and they would hark
to frightful cries, and then a sound
of rending, a slavering on the ground,
and blood flowing they would smell.
But none would yield, and none would tell."

I call your attention to the Rules:

Quote
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)

So, it's quite clear you can recycle characters as long as one of them is a mayor.

Speaking of music, I'm tremendously excited... I just booked some stall tickets to go and see Yuri Simonov directing the Moscow Philharmonic playing Concerto nº3 by Rachmaninov, Festival Overture by Shostakovitch, my two favourite composers, and Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev.
I'm dead excited. Given my lack of inspiration for this theme, maybe it'll help. Though it's the 28th of May so not too good an idea either...

Hello, @Yun Li:

I've started to read your story for this month, and I have a small suggestion around formatting. It's really helpful if you put an extra line between paragraphs. Even if the paragraphs look right in your own writing software - whatever that may be - they're sometimes lost when you paste the text into a forum post. Anyway, whether that's what happened or not, it would really make reading more enjoyable if you were to edit your post and put in a return at each paragraph.

Now I'm going back to read your story, paragraph spacing or not! And welcome. I see this story is your first post here. It's great to have you here.

A good point, thank you. The post have been edited. I hope you can really enjoy it, and the formatting was the biggest problem on the way.
Thanks for reading, anyway )

so.  um.  hey guys.  sad news.

i wanted to pop in and say that after 23 consecutive monthly entries, i'm going to miss this one.  and the rest in the foreseeable future.

basically, i blame two events:

1) the grim gathering / robin hobb / peter newman trip.

2) mark's 3rd spfbo.

i actually found this wonderful place after he announced the first one back in 2015.  i'd written a few chapters of my novel and was, like, "this is my goal!!"  then, the second one rolled around, and i was still not finished yet.

it's even been two nanowrimos and i'm STILL not done.

i keep finding excuses to put it off.

and then, last month, i hung out with all these badass aspiring authors who had, at the very least, their first drafts done.  and many of them were dropping books on shelves, both virtual and physical.  i want to be them.  i want to have a finished piece, dammit.

. . . and then mark dropped the THIRD spfbo where my book wasn't even first-draft-complete.

*shakes fist*

so, long-winded-style and with a heavy heart, i'm announcing my semi-retirement from the writing contest to work on my book -- i want to get the damn thing done.

*sniff*

but don't worry -- i still love you guys!

p.s.  if anyone wants to use my creepy pied-piper-zombie mashup idea, that be cool.  the dead within earshot are up and moving while he's playing his lute.  he stops and they all collapse, scattered throughout streets and homes.  he travels town-to-town, dragging along an ever-changing army as his song-zombies kill the local inhabitants and/or get left behind.

1/4 sad, 3/4 nodding with heartfelt compassion.

You'll be missed m3m! But you're not truly gone so that's alright!  :P
Also, remember to write capital letters after dots in your novel ok?  8)

Sadly not feeling the love for this topic either. Wrote two versions (1.400 and 1.200w, both unfinished) of a story starring a deaf MC and a composer/conductor, but don't feel like even the shortest version could be done well with only 300 words to spare.
Then I wrote a dystopian militaristic piece that is just god damn too depressing, 1.200w and though I could easily wrap up, it's just too dark...

Don't really know what to do with myself, and now m3m puts the finger in the bull's eye with his "should be sweating on the main project, not this" remark. *sigh*

I've got a little over 900 words down on the page, but I'm not sure how strong the theme is shining through. It might work, though it's not the most exciting thing. The ending still isn't written so I'm not sure how it will turn out.

Can we please keep this open until tomorrow morning? I'll be off to work at 11.30am and if I don't have it then, I won't have it until night, so that's a good deadline for me. I'm just really pleased that 12 got in before the deadline.
I like a good solid number each month. And I especially like having newbies and vets mixed in.

Argh!
I quickly voted for one just to test and now I can't change it and vote for those I really want to.
And I can't edit the poll!

She's still quite active on Facebook, but rarely, if ever, comes here.
