Useful links for the Quantum Thief!
« on: February 29, 2012, 11:10:33 PM »
I found this on wikipedia - and think it might be very helpful whilst reading!

Glossary of terms in Quantum Thief:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_terms_in_The_Quantum_Thief

and Prisoner's Dilemma (the game Jean le Flembeur is playing in the prison) sounds just fascinating:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iterated_prisoner%27s_dilemma#The_iterated_prisoner.27s_dilemma

And Conway's Game of Life

*regarding the Game of Life - just downloaded a free screensaver for this, but does anyone know of any other free to download programmes for playing with this idea?

Glossary of terms in Quantum Thief:

Nice - but should you not be able to understand without googling? Should they not be clear in the book?

It's not a book for people who like things to be explained to them - this is a whole discussion within itself actually - when is an appendix/ glossary needed, when not?  I can think of books when they were needed and not put in - and others when they weren't really needed but were there.

Very true.

Hah, that's a can of worms and no mistake. I know what you mean though, about some books needing them. Personal preference will come into play a lot. I mean, I usually prefer everything to be in the text of the story, but then again when I've really loved a book, I like to know more. So I can't decide one way or another....*wobbles on fence*

I did read a murder mystery set in Glasgow once, and while all the slang was really nicely worked into the story so it all made sense even to a poofy Sassenach like myself, the glossary at the back was worth the read all on its own.
