Title: [Mar 2017] - Through the Beast's Eye - Voting Thread
Post by: ScarletBea on April 02, 2017, 04:21:54 PM
It's time to vote on March's Writing Contest: Throught the Beast's Eye!

We got 13 entries this month - thanks to all who participated!

Please read through all of the entries in the submission thread and place your votes for your three favourite entries in this thread. You won't be able to see the vote breakdown until the vote closes, so spread the word for others to come and vote! We do ask that if you entered, to vote for someone else.

The key for the numbers of votes is this: 1-5 entries: 1 vote, 5-10 entries: 2 votes, 11-15 entries: 3 votes, 16-19: 4 votes, 20-25: 5 votes, 26+: 6 votes

Remember that the winning entry will be posted on the main Fantasy-Faction site in a few months.

Good luck to all our entrants and thank you for taking the time to read the stories and vote! :)

We'll reveal who wrote what at the end!

Sweet new guessing tool, m3mnoch!

But how did it select passages from the stories?

And sweet, our guesses are now in blue, in case you got who you attributed to what  ::)

Between, I just tested it, then decided to "erase" it by submitting a blank guess, but that still counts with 1 vote and a blank line.

i skimmed and grabbed something that looked unique.  just as a reminder of what the story was about.  if you guys want a different quote in there, holler at @xiagan and have him send it to me.

And I missclicked and submitted a 2nd blank vote for the same story and now I just get an entire blank screen whenever I access it...

Nevermind, it's back to normal. But the blank guess is still there as a "vote".

It also adds "%20" if the name has name and surname with a space between!

And the blue tint disappears from your guesses if you leave then go back!

Bea I am sorry, I sent you only half of the story, the only part that needed editing. And I didn't think of specifying it. So you replaced the entire story by only the last half!  :-X

Would it help if the thread is reopened and I go "edit" it myself anonymously? It would look like "last modified by anon"?

Why was my name only associated with the story that features cannibalism? What is wrong with you people? Can't y'all give me some credit for not always indulging in cannibalism? I'm not that predictable all the time, come on! Didn't I get second place by one vote on a cursed love story, with not a drop of blood shed on-stage?

Seriously.

I'll have you know that someone had voted Chuck Norris and I voted "Shuck Norris". Then when I came back the other vote had been altered to match.

*proud*

I'm very much wondering how many in the 5 people are actually voting for my name out of pure laziness, because I made such a fuss of being late, without actually looking into the style.
Everyone seems to forget that Lanko was a strong contender to last submission. I am offended by people thinking I could possibly have submitted after Lanko. I mean no offence myself Lanko... You know. It's more like a tradition for you to finish last than anything else.
Title: Re: [Mar 2017] - Through the Beast's Eye - Voting Thread
Post by: Lanko on April 15, 2017, 12:57:38 AM
I'm offended I'm considered for last entry simply out of tradition. That's sheer laziness, specially when I already broke said tradition twice, this year no less. I'm wondering if that vote for me on the last story is simply because of that...

Meanwhile, the same thing in Corpses is happening, I'm being attributed 4 different stories. Chameleons for the win!
Title: Re: [Mar 2017] - Through the Beast's Eye - Voting Thread
Post by: Nora on April 15, 2017, 01:08:12 AM
If you're offended, how do you think I feel, being given 5 votes for it just because people are too lazy to pick up the more subtle clues?
They're here for the people keen to play inspector.

It's not a tradition, it's almost a god carved commandment Lanko.
Title: Re: [Mar 2017] - Through the Beast's Eye - Voting Thread
Post by: Lanko on April 15, 2017, 01:16:05 AM
I was not being serious on being offended!

And it's not that easy to pick up styles and clues. Remember last Anonymous contest? The only entry who was unanimously correct was Rukaio's. Maybe tebakutis' too. Out of 15-18 stories most people only got it right 2-3.

I voted for you on the last story and my reasoning was: Nora is a fan of Hannibal and mentions cannibalism now and then. Nora says she'll be very late for this month. Last entry even features a philosophical banter regarding cannibalism. Any "problems" on style might be due to rushing last minute adjustments.

Is that correct? I don't know, but what else do I have?
Title: Re: [Mar 2017] - Through the Beast's Eye - Voting Thread
Post by: Nora on April 15, 2017, 01:24:22 AM
I was joking as well and joking on your joke.

Damn so maybe I should have followed my nose and given you the other story I thought was yours...

You're missing the whole conversation about Bea messing with other threads to hide which story was altered last, so you could look into that... Also you can go and see for yourself that the last time I submitted a story in the past tense was March 2016. It's not a rule set in stone but it's definitely a key to my writing you can't overlook anymore than "humour" in Rukaio's.

Then again maybe I submitted weeks ago and orchestrated the whole debacle with Bea and Xia to set up some spicy confusion.
Title: Re: [Mar 2017] - Through the Beast's Eye - Voting Thread
Post by: Lanko on April 15, 2017, 01:36:55 AM
I saw the conversation with Bea but when I did they had reopened the thread and the authors had already edited their stories, so her name was not there anymore...

I noticed the tense but like you said, it's not set in stone. I also used it in Urban Fantasy (and I think some others?) and others in other contests.

And more importantly, there was no wishy washy lyricism and maudlin unrequited love in there!   ;D ;D ;D

Quote

Hm, I don't believe that merely because I know you don't exactly like the whole Anonymous thing! Nice try, though!

So then shouldn't you take my word for it :o

But honestly can't believe you'd read the sat three stories and not see the clear difference in levels of wishy washy lyricism.

Post by: Lanko on April 15, 2017, 01:54:20 AM
Eh... I thought the same in Corpses and only got it right 2 or 3 guesses out of 15-18.

And word is hard to take for granted, I mean, I remember I clearly stated various times I was not even in that contest and people attributed 3 stories to me anyway. The more I said I wasn't in, the more the guesses went for me  :o

So maybe the more you deny it, the more the guesses are going your way  :o

Haha! That's what so funny, and in my eyes, so pointless with the anon as well.

However, since when is cannibalism something attributed to me? Only one of my stories ever featured cannibalism and it was unknowing. Can't count my early fiasco with the Wendigo, that never went to the contest.

I believe because you're a fan of Hannibal, dark stories and I remember you even said in the Writing Group post when looking for a group that you were heavy into cannibalism!

Then your entry is late and the latest entry features... a cannibalistic alien species.

Not the cannibalism, Nora, it's any unusual or unconventional dark. I've put in a guess for most of these stories, but will probably be wrong. There have been a lot of new writers over the past year and they do not enter every month so it is geting had to pin down a style.

Also there is the regular Anon which is a spanner in the works. Is it the same Anon every time ? Or are a few playing a game ? Sometimes I have hoped Doc Chill was back among us but never certain enough. ::)

ETA Guess purely on style and content, idiosyncrasies of phrase or lay out. I don't take any notice of the hints or stuff in discussion thread, none of you are trustworthy. :P

One of these days me and Nora are going to have to get together for an anonymous contest and coach each other into making a dark atmospheric story/goofy humorous story respectively, just to mess with other peoples heads.

Er... not saying that the goofy humorous story involving dogs that everyone thinks is mine this month is actually mine of course. The fact that I personally own a fluffy goof-dog is completely inconsequential to this situation. In fact why would I even mention such a thing? In fact, I didn't! It's all your imagination. I've never even heard of a Cerberus before and any claims otherwise are dirty dirty lies.

Phew. Think I covered that one up nicely.

Speaking of which!!!

Coaching is actually something I'd need. My attempt at writing "humour" for this new month is sinking into the tar pit of my tinted imagination. I can't find a comedic crux. It's always dark. The mc not getting what he wants, an end in despair... I really can't do it, and it makes the lighter beginning totally pointless.

Give me lessons please master! Share your knowledge and I shall call you shishou!

Only seven people voted so far.

BUT nine stories in @m3mnoch's guessing paradise have the right authors attributed to them. So the hive mind is (if I remember right) a lot better this time. ;) Some stories have five names attributed of course, so having the right name among them may not be saying much...  ;D

Congratulations @Rukaio_Alter  :D :D
(yes, I know we haven't revealed who wrote what, but come on, does anyone have doubts about this one? ;D )

I voted for you, for The Rye Mother (I know who wrote this one because I asked him and he confirmed), and then for A Taste of Humanity, which I'm pretty sure it was Lanko :) I was switching a lot between the latter and The Dance, they were pretty much on a par for me, so whoever wrote that one, consider an extra vote from me!

Congratz, Hellhound author! Is it Rukaio? I'm almost sure it is!

Well, double post and... Congrats to whoever wrote Hellhound. It was my favourite, a great idea and very well carried out. Amazingly fluid dialogue! Great stuff!!

Also voted for Just a simulation, which was my equal part favourite. Nerdy and poignant.
And finally understanding dragon.

And I get zero votes for the first time, since I indeed wrote the present tense story with the main character dying in it. Can't see why cannibal aliens were a better trademark, but did like that story a lot in itself. It was an interesting concept.

Well, I'm not necessarily saying I was the one who wrote Hellhound (since the identity of that genius was very well kept secret throughout the month), but if I was, I'm fairly certain this was how I would react to this news.

I'd also say this was a another great month all around with a lot of excellent entries, so credit to all the other authors this month. Top quality job from all of you.

Of course, all that would only happen if I did write Hellhound. Which I might not have. But I did.

Also, does this make me the doG Emperor of the Writing Contest now?

I voted for

The wind through the trees (surprised it had only my vote!)
Understanding Dragons (voted for a poem for the first time)
The Dance

Congrats, anonymous winner!

So, do you want TEH BIG REVEAL now or do you want to speculate a bit more and share theories, etc...?

Congratulations, Anonymous! @Rukaio_Alter

I voted for Hellhound, too. Loved the silliness of it. I could have used a tiny bit more of the "oh shite, these are actually vicious beasts", but hey, it was great fun.

And for Chain Golem - a really marvelous piece.

I went back and forth on several others, which were all really good, and decided in the end to just go with two.

For anyone desperately wondering, I might have written Rye Mother.
And I might actually put it up for critique.
I know there was tons of suspense over that reveal.

I think my votes mirrored @Nora 's

Hellhound for the sheer exuberant and inventive fun in it

Just a Simulation for the brilliantly nerdy take on a theme

Understanding Dragons for the accomplished poetry of ... a poem!

Although I did have a story in there, it was none of the guesses people had put my name against on the guessing board - so maybe people can guess a little more!

Oh, I voted for The Dance (my favorite), The Chain Golem and Understanding Dragons.

On guesses I was torn if Dance was written by Gem or TOMunro and went with Gem but now seeing TO's comment I think it was him.

Congratulations Hellhound author!

I voted for Hellhound, Understanding Dragons, and Different Wavelengths.

Since the analysis for my stuff is not hard, yeah, the golem story was mine.

Damn, you tricked me, sir. You posted in the Discussion thread you were having trouble and even posted a story, so I figured you couldn't have been the first, though I did wonder if it was an elaborate ruse. Turns out it was the latter  ::)

In truth, I was going to replace the Golem story which was sort of a rushed thing, and I was having trouble with it. The idea hit me for a chain golem, and I looked for a picture and amazingly, I found one, and the story followed probably too quickly. But I couldn't think of a better way to get into a non-human head and it be comprehensible and also at least a little entertaining. The tiger story depended too much on humans' interpretations of the animal's behavior and was really, really predictable.

Huge congrats to the anonymous author who is not actually anonymous! (*cough* Rukaio *cough*) Also, thanks for the comments on "Just a Simulation" - those of you who attributed that one to me guessed correctly (I took one look at m3mnoch's guessing page, and apparently, I'm super obvious) but I'm glad some folks enjoyed it! I'll update the Twitter when I get home today.

Sadly, I missed the Omens theme, as it has been just an absurdly busy month all around - including a constant speed grind at work, at home, and in general, including a deadline for some big edits on a charity story I got accepted a couple of months back. This also marks the first time in maybe a year or two I've actually missed submitting a story for a theme, so I'm a little bummed about that. At the least, I know I'll make time to vote for our Omens stories, likely sooner rather than later.

Hopefully, with both work and home craziness dying down this month, I will be on top of things for our Music theme (which is delightfully vague, which should lead to a rather random collection of stories).

Congrats Rukaio for the glorious fun of Hellhound - of course it was you, no need for hints about puppies even  ;D You got my vote along with The Dance and A Taste of Humanity, all three great entertainment, so many thanks TOMunro and Lanko. ;D
