Title: [Mar 2016] - Nightmares - Voting Thread
Post by: ScarletBea on April 01, 2016, 05:37:41 PM
It's time to vote on March's Writing Contest: Nightmares

We got 14 entries this month, most on the very last days - I knew you wouldn't let me down!
Thanks to all of you for participating!

Please read through all of the entries in the submission thread and place your votes for your three favourite entries in this thread. You won't be able to see the vote breakdown until the vote closes, so spread the word for others to come and vote! We do ask that if you entered, to vote for someone else.

The key for the numbers of votes is this: 1-5 entries: 1 vote, 5-10 entries: 2 votes, 11-15 entries: 3 votes, 16-19: 4 votes, 20-25: 5 votes, 26+: 6 votes

Remember that the winning entry will be posted on the main Fantasy-Faction site in a few months.

Good luck to all our entrants and thank you for taking the time to read the stories and vote! :)

I don't want to vote because of a lack of decisive opinion. Its going to take all month to narrow it down to three votes.

i haven't read any of them yet.  gonna try to get on that today.  however!  i have an idea that one story by that m3mnoch guy is TOTES gonna be the decisive one you're looking for.  it's weird, like, i just have this feeling, ya know?

Voted. It was an easy decision earlier this month, but several last minute entries forced me to make some tough decisions.
All of the stories were really good this month, and many left me wanting more.

It's usually my main criteria but with a theme like this I give it more weight than I normally would.

Many different interpretations of the theme, some similar, others way out, all very enjoyable reading and clever with glorious imagination. You all give me a special day once a month when I let myself just read the contest, sometimes twice over, and snack and be lazy. Thank you, just wish votes weren't limited .

Finally just voted for three that made a very strong impression, but each for quite different reasons.

This, but I spread my reading. I feel it can affect my view of the story, if I'm reading story number 5 or 6 in a row, on the same subject.

At the moment there are 3 missing (I don't read in order, by the way ;) ).
I think I've got 2 that I'm definitely going to vote for, and then a couple of contenders for the 3rd vote... let's see if the missing ones will add to this hehe

Well, one of the missing stories came up and knocked the contenders out. It was awful/creepy (@SugoiMe (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40371), I wonder if it's the same that got you scared...)

FYI
There's one story at the top, and then 2 tied a little away...

And another side comment: I strongly suggest to @Rukaio_Alter (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40087) to get all your funny stories together and publish them. Call it 'funny fantasy' ;)

Probably. Sometimes, the best stories are the ones that get the biggest reaction from you, whether positive or negative.

Hi there contestants have you voted as well as entered?

Bumping this to remind you, only open another day.

How many have voted so far @ScarletBea (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=32020)?  If every writer votes, and you can usually rely on three of us who are regular readers you should have at least seventeen.

I can't see, I'm just a minor mod (I can only see the results because I created the poll). You need to ask the big boss mod, @xiagan (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1148) himself ;)

There are 39 votes, which would mean 13 voters, but I know some haven't used all of theirs, so there might actually be more.

I've just had  nightmare's in a row.

First one I dreamt a tooth fall out of my mouth then another one fall out one by one until I had no teeth left.horrible dream

Second one I dreamt that no one was talking to me and felt very lonely.

Third one not really a nightmare just bizarre dreamt that I was driving an electric go-kart on the motorway to Blackpool.

I hate teeth falling out dreams.  When I get them my whole tooth doesn't fall out they just crumble and I'm having to spit out little pieces of tooth throughout the dream.

Worse than teeth falling out, for me, I once dreamt I had an eyelash growing on my eyeball.
But my nightmares tend to be more gory, with murder, rape, canibalism, wars and crashes.

Title: Re: [Mar 2016] - Nightmares - Voting Thread
Post by: tebakutis on April 29, 2016, 04:33:14 PM
I used to have *horrible* scary nightmares as a child. I'd wake my poor parents up screaming at least a few times a week. I had my own stable of various monsters who had made appearances in various dreams and would recur, at least ten of them. I slept with the light on and a radio going until I was at least 13, and the only reason I turned it off, eventually, was because I was tired and it was easier to go to sleep with the light out.

Comes with having an overactive imagination, I guess, which helped with my writing later on. :0

Of course, this later transitioned to a huge love of ghost stories, especially freaky ones, which I now find enjoyable rather than frightening. And what's also interesting (to me, at least) is that for decades now, I have completely ceased to have monster related dreams where I'm helpless. I'm always able to fight back.

I still occasionally have dreams where I'm being attacked by zombies, or a monster, or once even Freddy Kreuger, but in those dreams, I pretty much always either grab a gun and blow the snot out of my attackers or, at the least, fight back and evade or escape.

It's odd, but I am basically *never* defenseless in any nightmare involving monsters or other ghoulies, so those dreams end up being more of an adrenaline rush than a scare. While I don't have hard evidence to support this, I am relatively certain that this transition occurred because of all my gaming ... playing games like Doom, and Silent Hill, and Resident Evil.

In those games, horrific monsters ARE attacking you and you're incredibly tense, but you can fight back. Somehow I've internalized that, so in whatever drives my unconscious mind to create dreams, any time my mind conjures "scary monster" it also conjures "hey, here's something you can kill it with".

That said, I still fall victim to the more mundane dreams, such as the ones where you've wrecked your car, or your teeth are falling out, or (the most terrifying ones since the little one arrived) where something has happened to my daughter. I did have one freaky half-awake dream (one of those sleep paralysis things) where I dreamt I heard some creepy lady singing a creepy lullaby to my infant daughter in the next room, over the monitor. So basically, some random psycho insane lady was going to steal my little girl. Those are the types of nightmares where I want to find my unconscious and knock the hell out of it.

You can send zombies and nightmares and have my teeth fall out and have me show up naked to class, but if you give me a nightmare where my little girl is dead or in danger, you are going to really piss me off. :0

Had one of those. Even made a name for it in my dream. Mud-jaw. No cure, either. I still remember it and it was many years ago.

Voted. Good god, that was hard to choose. So many cool ideas! With such a wide variety of quality stories and interesting concepts, it was really hard to choose 3 over the others.

Also, a number of stories from writers I hadn't seen in the contest before, and good ones at that.

Luckily I never had one of those and hopefully never will.

I get the action filled dreams occasionally too - usually hard running, which leaves me exhausted. Nothing creepy, though.

Status update: A little over 300 words in about one and a half hours (maybe?). Didn't manage start right after I last posted and now I have to go (or get to go, I suppose) for a lunch at my sister's place.
It's coming along... slowly.

I'm winning, then. Still at zero.

And now I really should start writing something for this month's contest.

Congratulations to @tebakutis (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=31262) for this win! I was one of many who thought this was the cream of the crop.

And to @Patchwork Mind for "Mare Ridden". This was my other vote this month, and both stories topped the list.

Congratulations @tebakutis (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=31262)!
Yours was a great story! :D

Also to Patchwork Mind (unsummonable), a newbie who hit the ground running!

I voted for both of you and Nora (I don't get why only one other person voted for her, hehe) - and there were 4 other stories that could have got my vote.
Well done all :)

woo hoo!  i know that guy!

congrats "teh-bah-KOO-tees"!  (that's how my tts reader pronounces your name.  always makes me giggle.)  i voted for you!  (and ra and hedin)

i was wishing for four votes this month, tho, because i would have used it on patchwork mind's submission for sure.  if only for these two super-freaky paragraphs:
Noiselessly, without a whicker or neigh, the horse began to eat the bed. It slowly opened its sparsely haired lips, revealing tombstone teeth, and began with the quilts at the foot of the bed. It somehow managed to fit the entire width of the bed into its mouth. Karl watched in frozen silence, completely unable to move. He felt the horse’s rough lips against his feet and suddenly it was crunching through them, up to his ankles. Another bite and the mad staring eyes were closer, broad incisors scything through his knees. His breath seemed frozen in his chest, a ball of immovable ice that filled his lungs with searing.
A few more bites and he could smell the horse, its farm-yard musk and sweat, as it chewed implacably through his abdomen. Then it was in his chest, cracking through ribs and lungs and spine with the same swiftness that it cropped the turf in the summer. Before long it was up to his neck and he screamed, or tried, but nothing came out, his mouth was made of marble, cold and immobile. In a single bite the teeth closed over his head and all was darkness.
tombstone teeth.

creep.  eeeee.

I was really on the fence for most of these stories, they were all really interesting. tebakutis got one of mine, I really enjoyed that story.

Congratulations, @tebakutis (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=31262)! I almost voted for him, but at the last minute went for "traditional" nightmares and voted for @Blackthorn (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=41045), @SugoiMe (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40371) and Patchwork Mind (who said a newbie couldn't win? Guy was 2nd place!)

Wow, thank you, folks! We had a ton of great submissions this month, so I'm thrilled a number of people enjoyed my story. It was really hard for me to pick just three - I found something to liked in everything I read.

Onto the next!

Grats @tebakutis (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=31262)! Well-deserved win (though not because of me I'm afraid  :P)
As you said, so many great stories to choose from.

One of the things that guided my vote, despite me appreciating all writing, was the 'completeness' of the story: I mean, is it a full story, with a beginning, middle and end, or does it read like part of a bigger thing, sort of 'snippets of thoughts'?

Sorry if that wasn't the intention, but I had to get a criteria...

Congrats tebakutis liked your story from the start, glad I picked a winner. Was drawn in and fascinated by whole situation and the unexpected but perfect ending.

Surprisingly for me  also picked the other two top stories. Patchwork, congrats, hope you'll become a regular here and reason I voted for you is because you really truly scared me, what a nightmare.

Hedin, happy for you even though it was a 'Noooooo, how could you?' ending. Great story.

Thanks again to all writers, such entertaining reading again.

Not sure if we're going to do a critique thread anymore (if so feel free to move this), but could use some opinions on my story as there were two things I struggled with.   The first is that I didn't know what to do with the start.   When I first started to write the story I didn't have an open so I just started writing at the middle and thought I would figure it out from there.  After I wrote everything middle started to seem more like an open.   I knew I didn't want to show whatever occurred to send my character to the ER and that I wanted to keep it dreamlike where you just jump into the dream/story.   I toyed with showing the character being moved from the ambulance to the ER but nothing I came up seemed like it did anything for the story other than add some word count padding.

Secondily, I'm not really sure I captured when the character was dying very well.   The story is based on a nightmare I had years ago and I recall the slowing down and difficulty of thought but couldn't really figure out how to convey that in words or format.   Any suggestions on how I could have made that clearer would be very welcomed.
