Congratulations to @tebakutis for this win! I was one of many who thought this was the cream of the crop.

And to @Patchwork Mind for "Mare Ridden". This was my other vote this month, and both stories topped the list.

congrats "teh-bah-KOO-tees"!  (that's how my tts reader pronounces your name.  always makes me giggle.)  i voted for you!  (and ra and hedin)

i was wishing for four votes this month, tho, because i would have used it on patchwork mind's submission for sure.  if only for these two super-freaky paragraphs:

Noiselessly, without a whicker or neigh, the horse began to eat the bed. It slowly opened its sparsely haired lips, revealing tombstone teeth, and began with the quilts at the foot of the bed. It somehow managed to fit the entire width of the bed into its mouth. Karl watched in frozen silence, completely unable to move. He felt the horse’s rough lips against his feet and suddenly it was crunching through them, up to his ankles. Another bite and the mad staring eyes were closer, broad incisors scything through his knees. His breath seemed frozen in his chest, a ball of immovable ice that filled his lungs with searing.
   A few more bites and he could smell the horse, its farm-yard musk and sweat, as it chewed implacably through his abdomen. Then it was in his chest, cracking through ribs and lungs and spine with the same swiftness that it cropped the turf in the summer. Before long it was up to his neck and he screamed, or tried, but nothing came out, his mouth was made of marble, cold and immobile. In a single bite the teeth closed over his head and all was darkness.

I was really on the fence for most of these stories, they were all really interesting. tebakutis got one of mine, I really enjoyed that story.

Wow, thank you, folks! We had a ton of great submissions this month, so I'm thrilled a number of people enjoyed my story. It was really hard for me to pick just three - I found something to liked in everything I read.

One of the things that guided my vote, despite me appreciating all writing, was the 'completeness' of the story: I mean, is it a full story, with a beginning, middle and end, or does it read like part of a bigger thing, sort of 'snippets of thoughts'?

Sorry if that wasn't the intention, but I had to get a criteria...
