Title: [Mar 2015] - Rogues - Discussion Thread
Post by: xiagan on March 01, 2015, 08:48:36 PM

Rogues. Most of us have a soft spot for them. But why?
Because they steal from the rich and give the poor? (They are poor.)
Because they solve problems with cunning and not brute force?
Because they are as acrobatic as we want to be?
Because they always have a cool line to say, even in the most dire situations?
Because they are on half our book covers despite being creatures of shadow?
Because their love interest always falls for the airheaded warrior and not for them?
Or... all of the above?

This month I want you to write a story about one or more rogues. Have them plan a heist, lose at cards in a shady tavern, win a knife fight, rob a tyrant or seduce a rich man's daughter (or son). Let them do what rouges do best: Earn a a special place in our heart.

Rules:

1. This can be prose or a poem.
2. Must be about one or more rouges.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-500 words long.
5. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
6. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
7. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
8. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
9. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys next to the 'youtube' symbol:

Entry will close April 1st 2015 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/%28mar-2015%29-rogues/%28mar-2015%29-rogues-submission-thread/new/#new).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

So I saw the title of the contest, but not yet the actual prompt and thought: 1 rogue, 4 jilted women, revenge. I'll have to write that sometime, but it doesn't quite fit "letting them do what they do best."  :'(

And I did ask you to give me a prompt I can use for a fantasy hero running away on a bicycle.  If I can work that into Rogues, I deserve every vote!  8)

My God yes. I actually have a week off in March, so I can do this!

Going to be working off the idea of "stealing," as I am wont to do. Perhaps bicycles.  ;)

Oh, that was only for inspiration. The rules don't state that you can't do this. ;)

Good one to sink my teeth into. Had to admit I was defeated by the fanfic theme but will try harder with this one!  :D

Got to love a good rogue or twelve. I think I can definitely get something to fit into this. I'm currently working on a novel concept which features a number of rogues of various sorts.

I was planning on participating in every one of these contests this year, but I think that coming up with a good story for this one could actually be quite hard. Hard, but almost definitely a lot of fun. (And I'm not saying that the stories I have written previously were any good. I'm just trying to raise the bar for my submissions.)  :)

I have managed to include a "cave troll" into my stories for January and February. Not sure how I sneak that in for this one.  :-\

But what's the deal with those bicycles???  ???

Also, I use excessive amounts of smileys/emoticons.  :(

But what's the deal with those bicycles?
There was a thread about wacky book titles at Abe Books, and one of them was "Bicycles in War", so I felt we desperately needed a fantasy story with bicycles  ;D

We'll do urban later this year, you can save the bicycles for that month. ;)

Sounds like an interesting book. Its first sentence should be something like: "When medieval knights rode to battle, their mount of choice was a well trained bicycle."  :P

When the time comes to write urban, I, for one, will try to add in a bicycle.

Nahh that's clearly cheating, right? It'd be far more entertaining to read a story where Gandalf invents the bicycle or something :D

...damn. That is what we should have written for the fan-fic month...  >:(

It's a done deal folks, I've already started writing this month's story: "One Rogue, Four Women and a Bicycle"  ;D

I did have Gandalf briefly in a mental draft of my fanfic. But he made it clear he wasn't putting in an appearance, bicycle or no bicycle.  ;)

My biggest problem is deciding what sort of rogue to focus on.
Same, plus the fact that a couple of existing characters get stuck in my head when I think of the world "Rogue". Hobb's Kennit being the most vivid and interesting one who just won't go away.

I recently read the Rogues anthology and that had all sorts from different backgrounds and settings.

Argh, I see it now.

I'm counting from when I took over the contest in Dec2013, so at the moment (already counting May) you need to have five submissions in six contests to get the title.
I won't qualify until April.  :'(

Already got some stiff competition. Wow, this month'll be interesting. 8)

Having a hard time deciding on whether I should do Sea-Thieves (Pirates) or stealing a heart, some such nonsense, or whatever. Perhaps a better idea will hit me as the weeks go on. Hopefully.

OK, and now @Giddler (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=32893) joins @Raptori (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=38840) and @SJBudd with another super submission. As good as some of the stories last month were, I'd stack these up against them and steal the day. And I'll be royally peeved if anyone else does fit in the bicycle. I have to have something to make mine stand out  ;) ;D

After months of neglecting these I wrote my submission last night after a few days of thought. Now I just need to find time to polish and fill in the blanks. Although @Jmacyk (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=37094) already did jumping through a window so I might have to change that.

I'd like to take part. But one question. Does Fantasy Faction require any kind of exclusive rights over work submitted?
Title: Re: [Mar 2015] - Rogues - Discussion Thread
Post by: JMack on March 13, 2015, 01:40:09 PM
That was my first question, and @xiagan (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1148) told me:
Quote
Hey Jmacyk,

the copyright stays with you (of course). :)

It's just that a story posted counts as published. So if you someday want to submit a story somewhere else and they ask for unpublished work only, you can't use one you posted here.

Cheers,
Xia

Question for you's guys and gals.

Do we want "The Empty Chair," a tale of regret and making do, or "Open and Shut," a hard look at what can wrong when you're a "lovable rogue?" Because I really have no idea at this point.

'Making do' sounds rather boring, so "Open and Shut".

On a different note, I get the impression that some of you read the entries in advance (meaning before every one has posted their entries). Are you sure that doesn't influence your voting?

(Asks the man who will probably post his entry on the very last day.  :) )

Yeah, I figured you would do that. I'm more like: All at once (only once), with another reading if it's necessary to eliminate some stories in order to not run out of votes.

Maybe I should change my ways...  :-\

I only read them once the month's been finished and all stories posted.
I usually read them on 2-3 days, depending on number and mood, but I keep a list where I note down my score (out of 5) for each, then at the end vote for the highest score ones. In case of tie, I go and reread bits.
It works for me :)

Alright, posted a go. I'm pretty sure my definition of a Rogue is a bit too stretched but gniiiiih...

@Raptori (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=38840) : loooove your story already but I suffer greatly at the end, as I'm not sure if it's my deviant brain or what but... It seems to me like your (superbly written) rogue was actually talking to a goat? What am I missing?!

I reckon I'll read them all as they go and do like you guys re-reading with a point system in the end. Sounds good.

Halfway through reading yours right now, really good so far!

Glad you enjoyed it! In English, "Kid" can mean one of two things: a young human, or a young goat. Han Solo always called Luke Skywalker "kid", so we decided to make a joke about that  :P I guess it's something that people who speak English as a foreign language might not pick up on :D

@Nora (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40237) You are fast! Second day on the forum and you already got a contest story written (and still had the time to flood the forum with posts  ;) ). Very fast, indeed.

Although now that I think of it, I posted my first contest entry the very day I registered.  ;D Okay, I might have registered when I did because I wanted to enter the contest. (I'm still working my way to flooding the forum, though.)

I only read them once the month's been finished and all stories posted.
I usually read them on 2-3 days, depending on number and mood, but I keep a list where I note down my score (out of 5) for each, then at the end vote for the highest score ones. In case of tie, I go and reread bits.
It works for me :)
Maybe I won't change my ways then. Thanks!  :)

Haha! Sorry, I guess it's the excitement of the first days, and the bliss of being in contact with new people, even if only via a forum. I'll surely quiet down soon.
As for the story, I worked this morning from 5am to 10am while I could think about some basic features. Then I sat down to write from 10am till 6pm, worked an hour and got back to the story and published at what? 9ish? So worked on this for 9 good hours today! Not as fast as I wished it had been!
My only Internet connection is flimsy on my phone so I can lazily flood on the side, but not much else!  :P

You still seem to own the record on posting post subscription time!!

Okay, let's not say fast. Let's say... eager?  :)

And no need to slow down posting on account of my complaining. I'm slow reader and slow writer, and occasionally I like to complain.  ;D

So, go on and keep flooding the forum. It's good for the community to have active members.

One of the great things about this particular topic is that it has so much scope and the definition of a rogue is extremely wide and fluid and exists in almost any genre you care to name. Your English is quite good Nora, I'm always envious of someone who is multi lingual. I've read stories by writers whose first language is English and in some cases they show less command of the language than you do.

This sounds like a bit of fun... and a good way od distracting myself from all the other stuff I swore I would do this month. As a bit of noob around here can someone tell me, is it strictly fantasy or can we do a sci-fi short ?(I've had a one in my head for a while that I've not had an excuse to flesh out..)

Edit: Scratch that - I've just read some of them and that last one has post apocalyptic sci-fi all over it, so I'll see if I can find some time to knock something out!

Doubt it's contentious, but it's worth getting @xiagan (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1148)'s thoughts since he's in charge  :P

I would have assumed it's any speculative fiction, but then again there was a Sci-Fi specific month recently so that might not be the case. Personally I'd be fine with anything goes  :-\

Unless otherwise stated in the submission rules the story contest is generally SFF, which means both types of fiction science fiction AND fantasy (little Blues Brothers reference in there). The one exception I can think of was a couple of months ago when the topic was Science Fiction.

I know it's late and don't expect it to count, but the title of this competition sparked some creativity in me.

If the thread is open then it still counts, as far as I'm aware. It's still the 31st here so it should definitely be ok :)

There will be a voting thread in the next day or so, when @xiagan (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1148) opens it.
Go to the voting thread. You get three votes. The poll is at the top.
Voting will last all of April (yeesh)

Though that said, we recently bought a shelving unit worth 700€ (mitigating circumstance: we bought it second hand for 15€).  8)

No, no, give in to your anger, young Raptori. Let the mild impatience flow through your veins. Unleash your passive-aggressiveness annoyance and then you too will know the power of the dark side...

It's taken me a while to read all these Rogue entries and much longer to try and choose the final four votes. Thank you all for terrific entertainment, many rogues, different writing styles, a variety of settings -  I am completely in awe and can't imagine how some of you can knock off a story in a couple of days. My thanks to @ScarletBea (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=32020) for the comment about scoring, that was the only way I could narrow down gradually, and even then so many were still level. Anyway, voting done, congratulations and good luck to you all.
