"a Fantasy" (by DavidSondered)

This month, just before spring really starts (well, in the northern hemisphere anyway) and everything gets flowery and bright, I want you to write the grimmest and darkest Grimdark you are capable of.
Blood, betrayal, despair, violence, dystopian societies, broken heroes, fallen angels - do your worst. (But remember, there's a difference between splatter/gore and trve Grimdark.)

Rules:

1. This can be prose or a poem.
2. Must be Grimdark.
4. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
5. Poetry must be 100-500 words long.
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you pick an already existing piece of your work, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)

Entry will close March 31st 2014 and voting will begin April 1st 2014.

Please post your entry here.
The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website in MAy 2014.

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

Interesting theme,  ties in a bit with this thread on reddit /r/writing about the darkest thing you've ever done to a character

http://www.reddit.com/r/writing/comments/1zaxfr/what_is_the_darkestcruelestnastiest_thing_you/

I think I may already have written my grimmest grimdark!

I passed last month as I've sworn off fanfic (clean well over a year now ;) )

Not sure about this one. I'm not keen on reading grimdark, so I'm not sure how successful I'd be trying to write it. I'll see if anything comes to mind, though.

Writing Grimdark can be great stress relief!

Also, I'm not dead. I've just been terribly busy with comic stuff. @_@
I plan to write something for this month's contest! :D

I still haven't really figured out what grimdark means, but I'll take it to mean 'any story on the edge of emotionally abusive.'

If that's the case, I've had an idea in my head for a while that will fit... and it's going to be a fun day.

So having said this month wasn't for me, I've got a glimmer of an idea. Not sure it's going to be dark enough, though. But I'll give it a whirl and see how it goes. It's a page of scrawled notes at the moment.

Thanks for the link. I'm still not exactly certain if my story qualifies, but I think I will just post it. That's what voting is for right? (And I wouldn't be upset if it is disqualified for not meeting the definition of grimdark, since I had a blast writing it).

@ACSmyth "Not sure it's going to be dark enough, though. But I'll give it a whirl and see how it goes"

Not dark enough! looks (or reads) pretty pitch black to me.  Sets a good bar of darkness - will be hard to beat, I need more puppies, puppies and bricks.

LOL @TOMunro. Yeah, when I started filling in the blanks I discovered it had got quite dark. And I actually quite enjoyed writing it, which is rare for me with short stories. Normally they come out like teeth with pliers.

And thanks. ;)

Came up with an idea, but as I consider grimdark in general silly, I'm just going to see how many times I can yank the emotional rug out from under the reader. I might not finish and it might not qualify either.

I haven't written anything all year. Spring break is this week, and I may have a day or two to jump start my writing again. This seems like a good way to bounce back into the groove for book 2.

Started writing something for this. It involves a hog.

I'll just leave it at that.

Edit: Actually, I think I want to shop this one around. Maybe I'll come up with something else before the deadline.

OK, my entry's up. It is (another) short story prequel to the bloodline trilogy, makes me feel less guilty about spending time writing stuff which isn't getting on with book three.

Really struggled to make the weight (word limit) this time.

Must be getting more verbose in my old age.
