Title: [Jun 2019] - 2TTDFT - Discussion Thread

Two themes that don't fit together

(https://images-wixmp-ed30a86b8c4ca887773594c2.wixmp.com/f/9f5c3b40-a130-4fbb-8489-ed711fc70bda/dbvojxt-fb1eb799-8904-4715-b5aa-71a28c8e73e5.jpg/v1/fill/w_1024,h_724,q_75,strp/ludus_s_game___codex_alera_scene_by_albajaen_dbvojxt-fullview.jpg)
Ludu's game by AlbaJaen (https://www.deviantart.com/albajaen)

I haven't read Codex Alera by Jim Butcher yet but somebody once described it as ancient Rome meets Pokémon. That was the birth of this writing prompt.
This month we want you to combine two themes in your story that - at first sight - don't fit together (but may result in a great, surprisingly good fitting story in the end). Another example would be Evangelicals and Donald Trump, but that's sadly not fantasy.

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. You need to combine two themes that, at first sight, don't fit together.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-750 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys under the B.
Bonus rule: We consider voting in a contest you're taking part in a given. Others take time and effort to read the stories - you should do the same. A small community like ours lives from reciprocity and this contest needs stories as much as votes.

If you want so submit your story anonymously you can do so by sending it in a personal message to @xiagan.

Entry will close in the beginning of July 2019 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.
Submitting a story counts as published. The author retains all rights to their work.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/(jun-2019)-2ttdft/(jun-2019)-2ttdft-submission-thread/new/#new).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

It's well worth a read. I'm looking forward to reading the entries this month.

Absolutely! That is, until you have a good idea. Then it may write itself. :)

It's tough because it's thematic and self imposed. So if I feel like I can pull it off, I might suffer from "is it really something that doesn't fit together?". I'd have less of an imposter syndrome if someone else found for me something that "obviously doesn't fit together", like in butcher's case.

So i guess this is a month where I'd have to force a topic on myself rather than wait for inspiration to strike.

Interesting theme to come back to, given that I share Nora's worry. Though I'm playing around with the random article feature of wikipedia to see if that helps mitigate some of that worry.

So far the most interesting pair I've gotten is a species of land snail and the 1997 Super League Test series held in England. If only because the snail species is endemic to Australia and one of the two rugby teams is from Australia, so now I'm picturing snails playing rugby in Australia.

We haven't had a good animal fantasy story in a long time, so go for it ;D

Perhaps, but I often feel like I never do anthropomorphic stories and the like any justice. So perhaps not. I'll just have to see where it goes.

Ancient Egypt and Star Wars.
No wait, that's Stargate.

Swashbucklers and Westerns! Or Pirates and Cowboys if you prefer. A sea shanty on the sands.

This might be a good theme to return to action.

Damn, I was looking and the last time I wrote a story was in early 2017.

I think I might have an idea already (and it's only the 4th of June!).

For those who have problems coming up with something, I think the easiest way to do it is with time discrepancies, like @D_Bates' ancient Egypt and Star Wars. Or Dinosaurs and space travel, or 19th century morals and today's politics, ...

And yay, welcome back, @Lanko!

This is a tough one.  My mind is leaning towards Hard SF meets Heroic Fantasy, but that could change.

This is proving to be very hard. I can't think of anything that would work. Every opposite or unexpected mix I can think of is just OK... I think that's the point Butcher was making anyway, that you can make a great story out of any crazy combination of things.
So each topic I'm trying to match just seems alright. If I can imagine a story in it, it can't be that unexpected or unordinary.

So would dinosaurs and pirates work? Dinosaurs and mercenaries? See, my problem is that it sounds perfectly fine. A guy already managed to publish dinosaurs and knights, so how am I making anything original out of that? Fantasy is arguably the one place where its harder to find truly incompatible/opposits themes that haven't been mashed together.

Post by: ScarletBea on June 11, 2019, 08:05:37 AM
But @Nora, the story can be "acceptable" and "fine" and "logic", it's only when you say the 2 ideas together, out of the blue, that they have to sound incompatible and crazy.

I think the whole point is exactly what you're saying: that everything works out and sounds fab if the story is good enough :)

I don't know how something that sounds good to write can ever qualify as incompatible though. It's being too vague for my brain, I'm not managing to find anything solid to work on right now.

I finally managed to settle on my combination today. Had two ideas for short stories randomly come to me, and realised this was the perfect place to try and mix them together.

Might even get the thing written by the end of the month.  ::) :P

This. Experienced wordsmiths like you can of course make any idea look compatible. But if you hear Wild West but with Bikes instead of horses, it doesn't fit at first and then it will be a hilarious and silly story.

Looking forward to trying my hand at this writing contest, even if it's a toughie. I've always wanted to take part, just never had the time. Especially since the last time I tried my computer rebelled on me.

Good luck all!

Experience in word smithing might well be playing against me. I'm struggling to find anything that isn't a humour skit like "literally anything + smartphones". Everything sounds compatible enough and I'm not inspired by mixing franchises either. I don't know, this is not working for me, I think I'll have to skip this month, I'm gonna be crazy busy this week and next both, my mom is visiting and we're finding a new flatmate, so not having the beginning of an idea by now is a death sentence.
Sorry... I so wanted to get back into regular participation  :(

I went with something that I actually enjoyed the idea of; it is bordering on fan fiction so whether it fits or not I'll let people decide  ;D

I've tried to think of an idea for this, but it's so open ended that I'm drawing a blank. I'd much prefer something more defined.

That said, I'm still working on the story that spawned with last month's contest, so haven't had time for anything new anyway.

I don't have time to write this month, but if I were writing this month I'd suggest us collectively putting together lists of things that don't match in two columns

Iphone commercials ------- ferocious dragons
rom com -------------------- stoic mystical monks in a monastery
witch-trial torturers--------- noble-bright quixotic knights
feudal japan demon-realm-- tamagotchis-- neon Tokyo w/ girls selling sake in French maid costumes
Hero's Journey--------------- for a villain
space ships------------------- and fast food joints
slasher horror---------------- in Disney-esque fairyland England

Here's a 3-way:
aliens who made crop circles---set in the ancient Incan empire--with time-traveling Ninjas

Hero's Journey--------------- for a villain

Maybe not the place, but this instantly made me think of "The Dragon Beshrewed". A virtually unknown treasure of a book which is exactly that. Just think it deserves a bit of attention.

space ships------------------- and fast food joints

This somehow makes me think of Harold Kumar hunting a intergalactic white castle.

or a cheesey hunt for the restaurant at the edge of the universe.
