Gangsters and Crime Lords

'Crime Lord' by Jordy Knoop (http://jordyskateboardy.deviantart.com/)

Al Capone. The Godfather. Kingpin. There are many infamous crime lords in history and pop culture. Your job this month is to bring them into a fantasy setting.
They don't need to be the main character but a crime lord and their unerground organization have to play a significant role.

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. The story must contain gangsters and crime lords in a fantasy setting.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-750 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a major overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys next to the 'youtube' symbol.

If you want so submit your story anonymously you can do so by choosing 'post anonymously' while posting it (see here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/monthly-writing-contest/anonymous-posting-for-writing-contest-submissions/) how it works) or sending it in a personal message to @xiagan.

Entry will close June 30th/July 1st, 2017 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.
Submitting a story counts as published. The author retains all rights to their work.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/(jun-2017)/(jun-2017)-gangsters-and-crime-lords-submission-thread/).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

Unexpectedly, I find I'm in the world of one of my prior stories. I have the characters, the plot sketch, and some fun ideas. Now... how to fit all this in 1,500 words. It's like a squirrel trying to stuff three trees worth of nuts in one hole.

I've been building a collection of short stories related to my first novel (and the four that will complete the series). This theme fits perfectly with a period of the world's history that I haven't really covered yet, and would be a good bit of background for the upcoming second book. I hope I can keep it under 1500 words though!

I've been meaning to develop a thought I had about places where psychoactive drugs are mixed with magic. Perhaps this will give the needed push.

The worldbuilding on this is getting out of control...how can you have a reasonable criminal operation if you don't know what laws they are breaking and why?

It's been a fantastic exercise for me, though I don't quite have a story yet. I do, however, have a situation I am excited about.

I love how these contests are pushing me out of my comfort zone and providing me with a lot of opportunities to experiment.

1,622 words for draft 1.
Incredible what the word limit makes you do that's often quite good. I ended up with a very different ending than I'd expected.

Now I'll mow the lawn, pay the bills, do some work work, before I come back and figure out what to cut.

Well, I got a genius idea when watching Wonder Woman. Crime lords and gods.... I'm not too inspired with a specific tone or mood or even character. For once I really know what the set is like and what the tension is about but I have to come with people to fit it in. I'll try and write most of it tonight if I can. I want time to spend on my wip.

Now I keep picturing a mob boss threatening to off someone with a lawn mower. Or their lawn, if they're obsessed about how their lawn looks.

The only gangster story I can tell is when I met a Russian Mob guy in D.C. one night at a friend's birthday party. There was a cloud of hotties from Eastern Europe and Central Asia surrounding him. The guy's name was Petr (Pyotr, aka Peter) and I hadn't spoken Russian in a long time, so it was fun to try again. Petr was a big guy, shaved head, broken nose, with a red Mercedes parked right outside, and always flanked by 2 or 3 dudes from Central Casting. People came to him all night with issues and he did a lot of whispering in his henchmen's ears. He didn't own the place - he just ran it. His henchmen would depart, then return. No more issue. We got along well. He interceded when an Italian guy got in my face, which was handy, as I was in diplomatic/fun-time mode, and I think he felt I wasn't intimidated enough. Not sure, but he was pretty pissed. Petr made him go away.

At the end of the night, Petr politely rebuffed my attempt to invite him to another party the following weekend. He wrapped an arm over my shoulder and in his thick Russian accent told me "You're a nice guy, Mr. Scott, and a great businessman, I do not doubt. But you and I, we will never be friends. Different worlds. You understand." He snapped his fingers and two incredibly gorgeous girls walked me to my car.

I have a few irl gangster stories, but they're usually parties--  My friend's cousin took us out to a Vietnamese mafia/gang/international drug smuggler's after-hours party once.  That was a trip.  Then in Indonesia I had a run in with Pemuda Pancacillas, a youth group/mafia that deals drugs for the military and kills civilians/commits human rights abuses for them-- the subject of Oppenheimer's The Act of Killing.  I was stuck at that party for a long time with a dude with a gun holding my hand (it's a straight convention in SE Asia) all night while people lifted their fists in the air and shouted "Pemuda Pancacilas!"

Oh, and then of course there's 7th grade-- I was tight with the main gang member at our school cuz I helped him with his math.  "Dude, you want bi**ches, I get you b**ches.  You want drugs I get you drugs."  Yay public school.

Damn i wish I had time to write something this month!

So I know if I don't post this mad short now, I'll rewrite the thing four times like I did the other idea. While the other isn't bad, it doesn't have the pizzazz and flow I feel this one had. Could be wrong.

Eh. Good luck to the rest!

I think this is the first month where my idea is bigger than 1500 words.

Although my brainstorming has made me excited for a novel idea I set aside a while ago until I developed the skills to actually write a story of that scope, which has been quite fun to re-visit.

Whoop, I'm in! Love my story this time around, though I'm still sticking with my iffy theme of Gods and devotion like last month, on a different variation this month.
I'll edit it one last time tonight if I can but happy to let it go like this if I can't make it on time.

Weird question, but if we don't win are we allowed to use them for other things? I sometimes post little stories and whatnot on my website and I'd like to do that if it doesn't get picked.

Henry's right. It's yours and you keep all the rights.
But it counts as published by nearly every publisher so the one thing you can't do it enter it in contests or send it to magazine's who demand unpublished works.
