[Jun 2016] - Random Wikipedia Article - Discussion Thread
« on: May 31, 2016, 08:36:53 PM »
Random Wikipedia Article

I don't think we ever had a prompt that was so not fantasy related and so open. I'm really curious about the stories this will produce and the wide variety of themes. Steampunk, Portal, Grimdark, Military, Erotica, Parallel Universe - depending on the article you get, everything is possible. Please take the first you get and don't try to find the "right" article. None will be and you'll only get the muse's kiss if you take the first article. ;)

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. Go here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random. This must somehow be part of your story. Don't cheat and really take the first random article you get.
2b. If the article contains nothing you can work with (like: "Eschach is a river of Baden-Württemberg, Germany"), you can reroll. Let's say if it is less than 500 words long.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-500 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys next to the 'youtube' symbol.

Entry will close June 30th/July 1st, 2016 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

Please post your entry below. All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here. Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.

Please post your entry here.

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

Random.

I love random. X-COM2, Fire Emblem, ARAM.

Will we be able to randomize our votes too?  ::)

Just gave it a try, and if I was going to participate I'd have to incorporate the 1912 Cup Final.
There's a page for the 1912 Cup Final? Really? :o

By the way, Lanko.
No.

Hmm, interesting! I imagine votes are going to be all over the map on this. Since every single story will likely have a different subject thing, it may be difficult to decide which one "wins", since so many stories will be so different. Also, if you end up getting an exceedingly boring article vs a "cool" article (let's say, self-driving trucks vs how butter is made) you're going to have to work that much harder to make the story hook me.

I think in this case, figuring out what to vote for (at least if you want to feel "fair") may be a bigger challenge than figuring out what to write your story about.

BTW, my first click gave me this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eschach_%28Aitrach%29

Not much to go on. I mean, I can write a story with a river in it, but should we consider re-rolling if we get something incredibly generic? The entire content of this Wikipedia page is literally "Eschach is a river of Baden-Württemberg, Germany".

I can write a story with a river in it, but it doesn't feel like that's particularly difficult. :0

Apparently I'm writing about Hindu reforms  ???
Could be interesting I guess.

@xiagan, what do you think about this?
I'm tempted to say that only 'real articles' should be considered - this one is basically an atlas entry ::)

Yes, let's add the rule that you can reroll if the article contains just about nothing.

I will roll my theme once I'm finished with last month's  story ::)

tebakutis should totally write a poem about a river, though  ::) He could then add it to the Wikipedia: "In 2016, famous fantasy author T. Eric Bakutis wrote a poem about this river in a writing contest held at Fantasy-Faction, the biggest forum about Fantasy on the Internet."

RNG seems to love him.

Bwahaha. If only!

One day... :0

EDIT: All right, rerolled. This seems substantial enough.

Might actually have to do some research!

I got an American Christian TV Evangelist, because of course I would get that - his show is called The King is Coming
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Hindson

I'm so tempted to write a gay erotica version called that....

Note: I LOVE this contest idea. Genius whoever came up with it. :)

If my King is Coming isn't the most liked I'll be sad frankly.

We'll be letting Ed Hindson down!
