Title: Last Call by Tim Powers - Who's reading with us?
Post by: Arry on May 10, 2015, 07:07:27 PM
I've had this one on my TBR list for a while and have nominated previously for book club, so am quite happy to see it win. It's supposed to be a great book, and sounds like one that should be able to stir up some good discussion.

Quote
Twenty years ago Scott Crane abandoned his career as a professional poker player and went into hiding, after a weird high-stakes game played with Tarot cards. But now the cards - and the supernatural powers behind them - have found him again.

Crane's father killed gangster Bugsy Siegel in 1948 to become the Fisher King, and to keep that power he is determined to kill his son. Now Scott Crane must cross the Mojave Desert to his father's Perilous Chapel in Las Vegas, and take up the cards again for one last poker duel. And the stakes are the highest he's ever played for...his soul.

Week One: Ch.1 - 13
Week Two: Ch.14 - 23
Week Three: Ch.24 - 38
Week Four:  Ch.39 - End

So, who's reading with us? :)

Gonna try and get in on this. It's long overdue that I start using my kindle for more than gathering dust.

Does anyone have this book? I got the audiobook which is not helpful for selecting Weekly discussion breaks. I also think I may be running late with this one, so I thought I'd check for volunteers for starting the discussions :)

Just purchased it now. I don't mind starting the discussions, but since I'm new to this I could use a few pointers on how many weeks I need to split the story into, and any format pointers on how you want the thread to appear.

Sorry if these don't quite match up with other copies/kindle. I have given page nos based on the copy with the cover at the top of the thread. Also chapters so take your pick...

Week One: p.1 - p.136; Ch.1 - 13
Week Two: p.137 - p.263; Ch.14 - 23
Week Three: p.264 - p.396; Ch.24 - 38
Week Four: p.396 - End; Ch.39 - End

I suppose chapters might be best? Just FYI, they're a bit strange as they don't necessarily start on a new page.

I'd be happy to run discussions for this one, I'll be reading the first part over this weekend along with finishing The Magicians, so could have Week One thread open on Monday if that suits?

Hoping @pornokitsch (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=87) has some time to add thoughts to this one!

I'm happy for Idewilder to run discussions, and appreciate the breakdown of the chapters for the weeks, because yea, kindle pages don't quite tally up to paper copies!

So um, any objections from the Powers That Be to me opening discussions for this on Monday? Was going to read Week One's part tonight...

By all means, you are helping out I appreciate whatever you can do when you can do it. If Monday works best for you, then it sounds perfect to me.

Cool, I've already written up the post anyway.

I'm gonna give this a go.... I probably won't be starting it until I finish The Magicians though, but I'll try and catch up by the weekend.

I think I won't start before the mid of June (won't be home for the next two weeks) but will hopefully manage then. :)

So how does this work?  I read the first thirteen chapters, then stop for a week?

Read at any pace you want. But your comments have to be week-relevant with no spoilers, and posted into the correct week thread. There'll be one thread for each week. The new week's thread is usually introduced at the end of that week (if that makes sense).

This does appeal to me but I've read On Stranger Tides  and Declare by the same author and didn't like them that much. What to do?

I can't speak to those novels, but this involves a weirdly similar card-deck thing to that of the Deck of Dragons if that helps convince you...

Start reading.  If it doesn't hook you, stop.  If you can't stop, it did hook you.
