[June 2014] - Taboos! - Discussion Thread

Soo... Taboo.

According to wikipedia, it's "a vehement prohibition of an action based on the belief that such behavior is either too sacred or too accursed for ordinary individuals to undertake, under threat of supernatural punishment."

Great sentence. And lot's of words in there that should let your mind overflow with ideas.
And in the end, taboos will be broken. Either by accident or out of great need. No matter the consequences.

Rules:

1. This can be prose or a poem.
2. A taboo must be a relevant part of the story.
3. Ignore this rule, it's not really here.
4. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
5. Poetry must be 100-500 words long.
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you pick an already existing piece of your work, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.

Entry will close June 30th 2014 and voting will begin somewhere around July, 1st 2014.*

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here. Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website in July 2014.

Please post your entry here.

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

*I seem to never be home around the end of month, so please excuse if I'm not always on time (which is hard in an international contest with all the time zones anyways. ;))

Intriguing!  Hopefully I will have time this month to participate - this one sounds fun.

I'm on a forced vacation from art so I should be able to hammer out a short this month. I have no real excuses now as I can type just fine with my uninjured hand and have loads of that previously elusive thing called "time."

I had a dream a while back which may fit for this challenge. I'll have to discuss it with a couple of people and see if they think it actually qualifies as a taboo, though. For some reason my short story ideas tend to be much darker than my novel ones.
I will expand your TBR pile.

June's half over, bring your stories in! :)

Should I declare posting in the submissions thread a taboo? That may tempt you to break it.
And while doing so you can break a taboo while writing about breaking one. Tabooception!  :D

I have an idea .... then I was too busy to write down the punch line .... now I can't remember the exact wording! If I remember it (or can make up something equally good to fit) then I will finish it.

Have just posted mine. If I remember rightly last month there was a splurge of posts right at the end of the month...

Although time is short these days, with a lot going on in order to finish my thesis in time, I couldn't skip this month's contest! Really liked the theme, and the possibilities it is open to.

I don't know if other attempts beyond prose are enjoyable to most people, but I hope they can enjoy Parujin's tale. It required some effort to put together, particularly in a second language, but I'm very satisfied with the outcome  :)

Looking forward to reading more stories this month!

This one sounds extremely fun!  Wish I had noticed it before the 17th, but let's see if I can come up with something...

Mines up! I had to work hard to get it down to that 1500 word rule too.

Seven entries so far! Anyone still trying to finish her/his entry in the last days? We need a few more to give you three votes again. ;)
