I've been meaning to read this for so, so long - so I'm in!



Recently voted the greatest fantasy of all time, after The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun is an extraordinary epic, set a million years in the future, on an Earth transformed in mysterious and wondrous ways, in a time when our present culture is no longer even a memory. Severian, the central character, is a torturer, exiled from his guild after falling in love with one of his victims, and journeying to the distant city of Thrax, armed with his ancient executioner's sword, Terminus Est. This edition contains the first two volumes of this four volume novel, The Shadow of the Torturer and The Claw of the Conciliator.

Interesting and impressive fact:
Each of the four original volumes won at least one major fantasy or science fiction award as the year's "Best Novel".

Can I suggest again that this month we divide the read into chapters instead of pages as there are a few editions of this one and they'll all have different page counts - also I think anyone that gets the kindle version will have to get the books as single volumes as far as I can tell, although I haven't checked other ebook versions so I dont know if this is just a kindle quirk.

I wasnt able to find kindle versions for it .... if I can (maybe I am just tired and overlooking something obvious) then I am in
( I have become too accustomed to instant gratification and downloads (at all hours).... I'm at a loss not finding the Kindle versions)

I've read the tetralogy three times in the last 6 months. I'm not going to re-read it but I'll join to discussion, since there's much to discuss. Every chapter is a trove of thematic, moralistic, and controversial denotations and connotations.

Arry, sorry I can't post links cos I'm using my phone to reply- if you search for Gene Wolfe in the kindle section at Amazon you'll find the books listed separately - first book is Shadow of the Torturer and the second is Claw of the Conciliator. They don't have the multi-book editions available as far as I can tell. Hope that helps?

Since its digital content, it seems absurd that it's not universally available. ... I can order a physical book though, so I may do that if I cant get the Kindle version

I think you'll need a UK registered credit card in order to purchase a book from the UK store. Sometimes I wish I can purchase content from the US store too.

I just wish the publishing industry will catch up soon and do something about worldwide ebook rights.

I did check and my local library has it, so I put a hold on it and just have to remember to go pick it up.

so ... I am in. And on the plus side, with the physical books, the flight attendants wont make me put it away on take off and landing when I head out for vacation this weekend.
