Title: [Jul+Aug 2018] - Games - Voting Thread
Post by: ScarletBea on September 06, 2018, 08:08:06 AM
It's time to vote on the July+August Writing Contest: "Games"

This time we got 11 entries - thanks to all who participated.

Please read through all of the entries in the submission thread and place your votes for your three favourite entries in this thread. You won't be able to see the vote breakdown until the vote closes, so spread the word for others to come and vote! We do ask that if you entered, to vote for someone else.

The key for the numbers of votes is this: 1-5 entries: 1 vote, 5-10 entries: 2 votes, 11-15 entries: 3 votes, 16-19: 4 votes, 20-25: 5 votes, 26+: 6 votes

Remember that the winning entry will be posted on the main Fantasy-Faction site in a few months.

Good luck to all our entrants and thank you for taking the time to read the stories and vote! :)

I’m about to vote, but before I do, I want to say how awesome this month’s stories are. I could easily vote for five or six and enjoyed all of them. Really. The best month of stories in a while, IMHO.

Voted!

Maybe it´s because we had 2 Months instead of one. Also the topic was very bendable so there were tons of options, you can turn about anything into a game, it is how we spend our time. So people can become extremly creative with that.

I also thought it was hard to vote for only 3.

No it's just 100% because I'm back hahaha!

rolls out and away....

Seriously though, thanks for the post guys, as I need to start reading and I've been finding it hard to make the time recently. I needed that motivation boost. Now I'll make it a thing to achieve tomorrow, instead of "later".

Then if I could get the motivation to sit and write the new topic too......

Good job everybody! You kept me up late last night reading way past my bedtime.

@Slaykomimi I think it's because you all are a talented bunch of writers (and our fickle Muse decided to show herself slowly but surely) :)

Good luck everyone, I loved reading your stories! It's my first time submitting and I had a lot of fun writing my entry, likely will submit next month too! ;D

Yep, got to admit it was a tougher choice than usual! I voted for three but could have confidently voted for 5. Good month in the end, so I guess it's for the best we spent two months on it!

Interesting? Was there a 14-way tie? Did Russian hackers influence the outcome?

Congratulations @Alex Hormann :D

I *really* liked your story, you evil writer :P ;D

And see why I said "interesting"? 3-way tie for second place: congrats @simonster, J.R. (you're unsummonable!) and @wyvern (in your first submission!)!

The best praise I can receive^

Well this is a great way to kick of the month, thanks everyone.  ;D  And by such a narrow margin too! A lot of stiff competition.

I had to give my vote to @Carter . I am a sucker for a good Devil story.

Well played @Alex Hormann you got my vote, liked the excellent build-up then that very sneaky ending. @Jake Baelish and J R Darewood were my other choices, but @Carter was very close as well. Good to see new writers joining in, keep them coming. :)

Thanks for your vote Lady Ty  :)

Mine went to @J R Darewood, @The Gem Cutter and @simonster. Really liked Gem's sly wizard in particular  ;)

Congrats @Alex Hormann

And thanks @Jake Baelish  and @Lady Ty for voting for me despite my grotesque abuse of the English language (apparently thou'st isn't a word... I really shoulda re-done those poems)

My first vote went right back to you, Jake.  I loved the clever backstory to the war in the form of a harmless prank.  Sort of reminds me of kids I knew in high school, and you managed to convey both the wizard's crotchety voice and the voice of your three MC.  I was impressed.

I also voted for @Carter -- dude yours was really great!!! I'm a sucker for the deal-with-the-Devil trope. I struggled to puzzle out the ending.

My third vote went to @JMack -- that guy was so *evil*!!!!  I guess it's another devil in sheep's clothing, though your devil was far more sinister than even Carter's

If I had a fourth vote, it would have gone to Gem-- your story was very exciting.

Congrats, @Alex Hormann for a really smart story.

I voted for Family Game Night @wyvern for its lonely MC
Playing the Devil  @Carter for its mysterious vibe
And Final Days @J.R. Darewood for making me laugh out loud. This was my favorite story of the month.

But Carter, I havevadmit I want the answer spelled out. I think I got it....
Maybe in spoilers below? Please?  ;D

Congratulations to Alex!

There were a lot of really good stories this month.  My favourite was 'Family Game Night' (wyvern) which was a lovely little scene.  I also voted for 'That's How it Started' (Jake Baelish) because I liked the goblins, and 'The Final Days of the King's Champion' (J.R. Darewood) because the ending got a chuckle out of me.  If I'd had another vote it would have gone to 'The Cthonic Rigors' (The Gem Cutter) which was an effective little action piece.

Congrats Alex, I voted for your story! And also Simonster and Wyvern, who did extremely well for all that they're new to the contest, they just really impressed me.
Was a bit frustrated I couldn't have one or two more votes this month, and if I'd had one more I'd have for sure voted for Darewood's silly tick tack toe story. I found it very endearing.

Also thanks to the three people would voted for me, since my rusty piece was really on the fringes of what the theme allowed. I wasn't expecting anything out of it, so thanks!

Congratulations Alex.

My votes this month went to simonster, wyvern and Nora.  But if I had had 9 votes I would have struggled to cut one of other stories.

Thanks to everyone who voted for mine and the comments.  I must admit I struggled to weave in everything I wanted to hint at what was happening so for those interested...

The Devil wants these sorts of story out in the world.  The more widely the tales spread, the more people come to believe in Him, seek Him out and ultimately the more people will succumb to Him.  So every so often, He deliberately sets Himself up to lose by seeding an esoteric way out for someone who challenges Him.  In this case, the challenger is shown a card on entry.  The implication in her eyes is this is the number of souls she is risking, but in actual fact it is the one card she will never see during the course of the poker game.

In this way, in the Devil's eyes in His great game of good vs. evil, His actions are for the greater evil.  Except of course, a child is a blank slate and full of possibilities, so who knows what ultimately may stem from Him losing this particular game.

Gray, Grim and Gorm say thank you, sir  ;)

Btw, I loved the 'Ready Player One' vibe I got from your story, don't know how much if any inspiration you took from that, but it was cool  8)

Thanks!  I hadn't been thinking of 'Ready Player One' at the time, but now you mention it... ;D

Actually I was worrying that a lot of stories would take 'games' to mean 'videogames'.  Quite surprised to have been the only one.  Guess that's the fun of having a theme - seeing people come at it from completely different angles.
