Title: [Jul 2016] - Story Generator - Discussion Thread
Post by: xiagan on July 01, 2016, 09:37:08 PM
we proudly present:

This month's theme has many fathers and mothers. @Lady_Ty who posted the Shakespeare Adaptation Generator in the Ideas Topic, @Raptori who modified it (we kept some of your choices!), @ClintACK who provided the online dice roller you will use below and at least @ScarletBea and yours truly who put it together. We hope you have lots of fun with it! :)

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. Go here: http://roll-dice-online.com/ Number of sides: 5; number of dice to roll: 7; number of rolls: as much as you need to find your perfect theme. ;)
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-500 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys next to the 'youtube' symbol.

Entry will close Jule 31th/August 1st, 2016 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/(jul-2016)-story-generator/(jul-2016)-story-generator-submission-thread/new/#new).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

Bwahaha this is great. I vowed to take the first roll I got (no backsies!) since I found I really enjoyed the challenge of the random Wikipedia story contest. And here's where I ended up. :0

Paranormal Romance
Royal Heir
Church
Wand
Too Trusting
Evil Wizard/Witch

AND...

DINOSAURS

First, I've never written romance, and consider myself terrible at it.

Second, while I have some ideas on the first six rolls, I have NO IDEA how I'm going to work in the 7th.

I can't think of an element that is LESS appropriate to the other six than ****ing dinosaurs! That's amazing. Should be a fun story to write. :)

Thanks. :)

Interesting. When I made the topic it wasn't visible to you, so your names aren't red and you got no notification. I wonder if @Arry (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=8809) would have been if I had mentioned her too...

This is so funny ;D
I tried rolling a few times and imagining the story that would come out with those prompts, and I just keep laughing so much!!!

Interesting, though I'm not sure I should trust my brain. As I looked over the chart I saw stingy and misunderstood it. Instead of stingy as in cheap or miserly, I got stingy like a bee stinger. Now I'm just getting images of mutant bee protagonists in my head.

Genre: comic
Class: Wizard/witch

Extra: Dinosaurs.

Yes. Perfect. I already have the opener planned out:

"I just wanted to be a dentist. That's all, but of course I had to be pushed into the family business of shooting fireballs and protecting brainless warriors. To top it off, I got saddled with a snarky weapon. Oh, and now I'm going to drown because of a wingless dragon...and my mother. FML. I blame my halfwit brother."

YES!

Felt a bit silly to keep re-rolling until you get something good, thought it would be more of a fun thing to take what comes first.

Not that it matters I'm a poop writer anyway :P so i'll make it work.

I apologise if someone has asked this, but if we're feeling greedy and insane, is it frowned upon to roll multiple times so that say a Wizard/Royal Heir storms a Castle by a Lake with his Magic Sword to find the Wand, where they are confronted by the Evil Leprechaun Wizard who plays on their Greed and Naivety to escape with all the Goat Cheese in a massive explosion?

I don't know what the rules should be, but I'm very tempted to say just go with it... although don't forget it should also match the genre ;) That might work for comic, for example, but not so much for epic/grimdark.

(@xiagan (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1148), what do you think?)

First roll, and i'm going with it.
Paranormal romance
Thief
Lake
Magic dagger
Superstitious
Their Mother
Cake
I know just what to call it. 'Love resides in Cake and Daggers'
How do cakes and daggers have a mother? I will work that out! Flour and Iron maybe? I don't even know anymore.

Upon reflection, I think @Rukaio_Alter (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40087) should be required to choose some other genre than humor.

Such as... Humorous Grimdark, Ridiculous Paranormal, Only-sort-of-Epic.........

This sounds like a really interesting challenge. When I got my results all I could think of was Hyrule Castle from Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, lol. I don't know why, though.

Urban
Royal heir
Castle
Talking Sword
Stingy
Evil witch/wizard
(I choose wizard)
Massive explosion

I can make this work. :D

Nah please, don't tweet mine. I'm not keen to have anyone doing the same story based thing. I guess the purpose here is that it's very unlikely we have the same end stories, thanks to probabilities... But based on the same "rolls" it'd be much harder to be original. I want my witch story to remain my own, if you don't mind.

I'm nonplussed at a nonplussed reaction. I see nothing wrong with some people's rolls being shared, I just don't want mine to be, for the very odd chance that someone ends up using the very same set up, in a contest where obviously the odds of people having the same bones to build their stories are nearly null.
Besides it's such a large part of the story, that it's like sharing your preliminary plot on any other month, before starting to write on it. You'd be loath if some beginner decided to join and expend on your idea, however flimsy that possibility is.

That's just it - I wouldn't! For one thing, it's a bunch of plot elements that you can combine them in any way you want, not an actual story idea. But the actual important thing is how each writer expresses their idea - just look at how different the contest entries usually are, despite their common roots.

A word, like "Doors", "Taboo", "Nightmares" or "Rogues" are hardly the same as "a pirate, walks in a bar, in a grimdark setting, with a Wizard nemesis, a wand and a massive explosion". If we wrote a story along such lines, I wouldn't be voting on such a month, out of foreseeable boredom.

I don't feel like justifying myself more though. I don't usually feel like sharing details of my story process until the work is done, because it feels like spoiling the fun with stuff that isn't reading-worthy, so I'm not surprised to feel like my roll results should stay on the forum where everyone understand that they're meant to roll their own.
Even if the twit said "Nora rolled this and will write about it", I'm still liable to change my mind, so why bother?

Others are here to do it, who believe like you do. Or you could roll one and have it shared, if you feel it makes it much better than rolling a couple of example rolls?

If everyone was doing it, perhaps, but two or three using the same would result in very different stories imo.

I don't usually feel like sharing details of my story process until the work is done, because it feels like spoiling the fun with stuff that isn't reading-worthy, so I'm not surprised to feel like my roll results should stay on the forum where everyone understand that they're meant to roll their own.
That's all fair enough. Still find it a little weird that you'd share the results on the forum when anyone can see it if it's that big a deal to you, but whatever!

Others are here to do it, who believe like you do. Or you could roll one and have it shared, if you feel it makes it much better than rolling a couple of example rolls?
So you don't see how telling people the basis for stories people are actually planning to write might make people interested to read or join in?  ???

I think it would be interesting to see how close stories with the same choices would really be. I have a feeling that with all our diversity and influences that stories would remain rather origional regardless.

Rolled two, one on dice and the other by m3mnoch's automated:

DICE:

Genre: Urban
Class: Pirate
Location: Dungeon
Object: Magical Dagger
Weakness: Too Trusting
Nemesis: Evil Wizard/Witch
Extra: Dinosaur

M3M's:

Genre: Urban
Class: Royal Heir
Location: Church
Object: Scrying Bowl
Weakness: Stingy
Nemesis: Enchanted Animal
Extra: Cake

And the automated version is just too handy! Did a second one and look at this!

Genre: Grimdark
Class: Thief
Location: Tavern
Object: Golden Goose
Weakness: Greedy
Nemesis: Their Mother
Extra: Hairdresser

The possibilities!

If everyone was doing it, perhaps, but two or three using the same would result in very different stories imo.

Indeed that's your opinion, I happen to not share it, nor be interested in participating in a contest where several people write on the same set of rolls, bite me.

The result of what? My roll? Because on the forum, people know better than to think that since they like what someone else's rolled, they'll try and write the same. It seems rude to do that without asking. People not familiar with the forum might not realise it. They might not get the concept of the theme either. I've tried to explain it to a friend who is trying to get down to reading, and she was not understanding the concept very well on first explanation.
Then again I don't see why it'd be a deal to you at all that two people in a concept casually involving 10+ people would rather not see their rolls on twitter? It's not like you can't do it, or others who don't mind.

Others are here to do it, who believe like you do. Or you could roll one and have it shared, if you feel it makes it much better than rolling a couple of example rolls?
So you don't see how telling people the basis for stories people are actually planning to write might make people interested to read or join in?  ???

And how is my refusing to have my roll result on twitter going to affect people who might join in any way? How is an automated roll in any respect different from "nora's roll"? Or again, if the issue is so important to you, why not give away your roll?

Yeah I think we've established that. I'm just voicing my disagreement with your position, no idea why that gets you so upset!

I don't usually feel like sharing details of my story process until the work is done, because it feels like spoiling the fun with stuff that isn't reading-worthy, so I'm not surprised to feel like my roll results should stay on the forum where everyone understand that they're meant to roll their own.

Yeah. I don't see any difference between having it publicly shared on Twitter and having it publicly shared on the forum. In either case, people are going to see it. If you wanted to keep it private, posting it in a public place makes zero sense to me. But, seriously, it doesn't matter to me whatsoever, just explaining because you keep asking!

And how is my refusing to have my roll result on twitter going to affect people who might join in any way?
It's not.

How is an automated roll in any respect different from "nora's roll"?
Ok, you clearly just don't get it. To be clear, it's not about your roll in particular. You can do whatever you want, it's irrelevant.

There are hundreds of random plot generators out there, so just tweeting a random roll and saying "write this and enter our contest" isn't likely to engage people much. Posting a roll that someone intends to write and saying "this is what we're writing, come and join in" is a little more likely to get people interested. It's a small difference, but any potential detail like that is worth pursuing if you're trying to get people involved in something via social media.

Or again, if the issue is so important to you, why not give away your roll?
It's not important to me at all, just trying to explain myself since you clearly don't get it and since you're asking questions - it'd be impolite to just ignore you. I can't "give away" my roll because I'm not planning on taking part.

I think I get your point, it's not written in tongues, but what I truly don't get, and you're not answering, is what is different between a random roll, and my specific roll.

Quote
"random roll"
This is what we're writing, come and join.

Is just as catching as using mine specifically. It's a non-issue. Mr. J won't be distressed by having one less story to copy-paste into twitter... The thing I don't get is why even find it relevant enough to comment on it.

Quote
I don't see any difference between having it publicly shared on Twitter and having it publicly shared on the forum

The forum is full of forum people, who read the rules, know how it works, or even as strangers, will read the rules, see everyone has their roll and go and do theirs.
Twitter is full of strangers, anyone following the twit thread can read it. If I wanted my chosen rolls or plot details shared with the wider world, I'd make a twitter account and post it there. I just trust you regulars, to not plunder other's chosen story rolls without asking if that's fine.
Maybe you don't see the difference between twitter and a forum full of regulars, and are as comfortable in both? I am not, at least not when it comes to this specific issue. That's all there is to it, nothing more.

I answered it in my previous post.

Indeed.

The thing I don't get is why even find it relevant enough to comment on it.
It was relevant because Mr.J was giving up on his idea; I commented because I thought it was actually a good idea, and definitely worth following up on.

Sure I see the difference between Twitter and the forum. However, if someone were to join in the contest, chances are they'll read at least some of the threads in the contest forum before doing so. That means they'll see your roll anyway, since you've posted it here. Therefore, I don't see the difference between posting your roll here and posting it elsewhere if your issue is not wanting others unfamiliar with the etiquette of the contest to use the same roll as you.

If I run one, would I write it?

Yes please.

How long did it take to decide on the different permutations in the generator btw? Basically what were the ones that got rejected?  ;D

Okay, here's a double one:

Comic Grimdark about a pirate and a thief who are stuck on a lake overshadowed by a castle. They tried to steal back the thief's prized magic dagger, but somehow took a talking sword instead. The thief is highly superstitious, so naturally wants to get rid of the clearly posessed talking sword; the pirate is extremely greedy, and so naturally doesn't want to waste such a worthy prize. A fight between them ensues. Meanwhile, the thief's ex-girlfriend - an evil witch who rules the land with the aid of her horde of magical dinosaurs - discovers that her sword is missing and attempts to prevent their escape. By showering them with goat's cheese.

Oh, we started with Raptori's ideas, then Xia added/deleted a few categories, and then I chose to keep/add the items I liked best, and then we all laughed a lot imagining what was coming ;D

Boy, do I feel you. I've picked UF but I can't seem to be able to stabilize between silly comedy (which I'm not experienced at) or grim dark ideas and lines. I'm struggling with the "cool and chill" that always goes with common UF.

My problem is that Paranormal Romance is usually comedy -- unintentional comedy, but comedy.
So how do I write unintentionally comic romance?   ???

Oh no, not all, trust me. Nothing funny in Twilight, and little precious fun in the Black Dagger Brotherhood! I think you can focus on the romance and keep the humour to a minimum, I would not see a problem there at all.

I was being arch, or facetious, or what you wish.  ;)  one of my favorite moments of unintentional humor in one of those Harkness books (the first, i dont recall the title), when the author describes a character from the pov of the MC. The MC is standing far across a library from the love interest, and describing the smallest details of his beautiful shoes. Thats the unintentional humor I mean, born of overdone earnestness.

But,yes, I agree. I'll writie it straight and let the chips fall.

I've read FF and followed them on twitter for awhile. I've casually browsed the forums during that time, but never signed up. Or I did sign up at one point and forgot my login. That happens to me sometimes, considering I randomly choose the username I'm currently typing from.

Anyways, I saw the story generator prompt and generated a few and my story just sort of materialized fully formed, ready to write. If it hadn't, I probably never would have said anything out of shame and never submitted anything. And then deleted my account. And canceled my internet connection.

To answer your question, I joined the forums and then saw the prompt. But I am following the twitter account now!

Or is this because I am clicking on the link and it syncs automatically? If others of you click on the Twitter link do you come up in the FF Forum in your own FF account? And what comes up when a non FF member clicks on the Twitter link?

It doesn't quite work like that. When you sign in to a site, your computer stores a little file which acts like a key to your account (called a cookie). When you then continue using that site, your computer tells the site what account you're using, and it shows you all your inbox info and signed in stuff and all that.

When you send a link to someone else, and they click on it, they don't see your account information because they don't have your account key (cookie) on their computer. Instead, if they're logged in, they see their inbox and account info. If they're not logged in, then it depends. If the link is publicly available, they'll see the content (with no logged-in account stuff available); if not (for example if you send someone a link to a restricted forum like the critiques section), they get redirected to the forum homepage.

Unless something's going very wrong (for example if someone's trying to steal account info) links never include account information. All the account/sign in stuff is worked out between the website and your computer, separately from the hyperlink. You don't have to worry when sharing links from F-F.  :)

And is a lake... just of water?

Interesting to see what you do with this. I got the exact same randomness, apart from the magic dagger!

This is becoming a cliché, but I haven't started it yet. In fact, I haven't even decided which of the three stories generated I will use. Maybe I should just keep rerolling and rerolling  ::)

Mine's supposed to be Epic Fantasy but has turned into a self narrating self loving Pirate Captain sleeping with a man/woman with two heads.

I don't know why.

Thanks! I originally meant for it to be 500 words. Turns out, once again, that it's harder to write less than more. Came in at 2100 before merciless cutting, perhaps due to the inclusion of so many elements.

Anyway, I look forward to being judged ;)

i'm trying!  i just got freed up last night after having been in hardcore-left-brain-ville for a month.  i gotta get them creative juices flowin' again.

most likely, i'll slam out something terrible.  which makes a little sad since it's one of my favorite topics so far.

working on my story today!  i plan on finishing it up this evening.

with as much non-creative work i've been up to lately, it's rough getting the prose-motor to turn over, but it's starting to thrum!

even still, i doubt if this month's story will be as polished as anything i've written in a while, but damn it feels good to be writing again.
