Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan - Who's reading with us?
« on: December 15, 2012, 01:43:28 AM »
In January, our sci-fi pick is Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan.

“In the twenty-fifth century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person’s consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or “sleeve”) making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

Ex-U.N. envoy Takeshi Kovacs has been killed before, but his last death was particularly painful. Dispatched one hundred eighty light-years from home, re-sleeved into a body in Bay City (formerly San Francisco, now with a rusted, dilapidated Golden Gate Bridge), Kovacs is thrown into the dark heart of a shady, far-reaching conspiracy that is vicious even by the standards of a society that treats “existence” as something that can be bought and sold. For Kovacs, the shell that blew a hole in his chest was only the beginning. . . .

From the Trade Paperback edition.” – Amazon

So who is going to be reading with us?  ;D

I'll definitely be reading this one, though probably quite erratically woth A Memory of Light out on the 8th.

I'm going to join in. This'll be my first Sci Fi book in over a decade and probably only the 4th or 5th Sci Fi book I've ever read!

I might join in for a re-read, if not I'm still up for discussion.
After voting for it all these months, I'm now worried that you'll all hate it :P (No reason why specifically)

I'm liking the Fantasy book club so much that if I can get a copy of this in in the next week or so, I'll be joining in as well!  Looks like a great read, and honestly, I was hooked by just the title...

That's awesome  :)

I've only read the first portion so far but it is a much more entertaining read than I expected.

Here's where I plan on stopping each discussion:

Week 1: Chapters 1 - 9
Week 2: Chapters 1 - 19
Week 3: Chapters 1 - 30
Week 4: Finished!

Won't be reading this in January, but after skimming over some of the comments, I think I'll really enjoy this book. Maybe read it after March's Book Club book. (That one being possible as well)
