The others are busy reading probably!!   

I'm up to chapter 27 now, so please stop me from getting confused if I mention anything I shouldn't!!  lol.  The author is very much concentrating on the two characters, I wonder if he will branch out and go into more detail for others on the crew.  I didn't like Ocean's Eleven, so maybe that's why I'm not totally enamoured with the book, yet.  So far, I'd give it nearly a 4 out of 5.

Just finished the first section - absolutely love the writing style - really, really do. Like some others have said, I'm still a bit 'eh...' with Vin, I mean... I know she has had it hard... but time to; man-up! You have powers, no one can mess with you any more girl!

I think maybe Brandon Sanderson just tried very, very hard to enforce into our minds that she is weak / un-trusting, but also that this is a strength - perhaps it will play a big part in the book later on.

I should really slow down, I suppose, but I've always been an avid reader.  BTW - I just finished the book late last night and have now started the first in Terry Brooks' The Word and the Void trilogy.

I'm 34% through it right now I wanted to finish it on the 10th (I am also reading a book called Toothless).

I've got used to reading during the day when the kids are about, don't know how but if the book is interesting I can kind of drown out some of the background noise!!     oh, and having a husband who works shifts helps, as I read most evenings instead of watching the tv.

Im back at work now so should be able to get here daily. Started this a couple of days ago and Im on page 5-600 ish and I must say I am not impressed. I find the story pretty boring, for me there is nothing new.
The characters are very linear, there is no real history or depth to them {apart from Kell and Vin}. Vin I find nothing but annoying, although this may be intentional. The read is an easy one and I can see how ppl would like this, but after reading Steven Erikson and Scott Lynch last year Im finding this run of the mill.
Maybe I have just read to much fantasy and generalise books/storys to much. Sorry to be the ONLY ONE to slate this book but I think in this day and age we need something better.
The magic system is ok but very similar to using elemental type magic or even lay lines, maybe Im just being to cynical or maybe Im just a miserable old git, either way not impressed so far.

I'm actually glad I'm not the only one thinking that about Vin. 

It's probably a personal thing, but I prefer a fantasy to have an actual quest including travel, the thing about this book which could make it less interesting for some people is that it is set virtually all in one city.  I do feel that Vin is very two dimensional myself and slightly on the annoying side.

Having said that, I do like his style of writing, I'm not sure whether I'll finish off the trilogy though, given what happens in the first at the end.  I'll say no more though!!

Still sounds like my feelings about this book are warranted I will finish it by the end of the week.

I had his other book The Way of Kings in my hands in the bookshop today, but it was too expensive and I'll wait for the kindle version to come down in price at amazon I think!!!

I've only now just started it, am intrigued at the end of chapter 2 but obviously need to go through a bit more to grab hold of the story. I have this weekend off so will hopefully have more time to power through it!!

Glad you guys are enjoying it! I'm just over half way through now and it's getting very good. I think you will warm to Vin as the book progresses, I think that was my only problem with the book initially, but once you adjust to her as a character and learn her 'traits' so to speak it's fine

Looks like it I can see reasons not to like it - you really do have to work to accept Vin, I certainly don't 'like' her and so far I don't really care what happens to her... in fact if she died I wouldn't mind too much - it might speed up the whole thing, lol.

But the story telling, the world the novel is set in, the magic system, it's all fantastic. I think 'Way of the Kings' if the style is similar (I know the story is great - I read a synopsis on it) will be EPIC!

M8 to be fair Im having trouble relating to all the characters. For a book thats 700 pages+ {I think} I think we should have had a lot more depth so far. It's very rare I take a dislike to a book and being 500+ pages in Im finding it very poor. There should be far more intrigue going on, the political element to the book is so poor it's embarasing, I find the story linear and predictable. I really wish I did like it, perhaps I just don't like the authors writing style?
At times I find myself rushing to read pages as I am that bored. The only thing I like so far is the image thats been built up of the steel inquisitors and Im sure thats only because of the spikes through the eyes scenario, as I have a very vivid image of what they look like.
I honestly can't think of a book I have read over the last few years that has been this dissappointing in my opinion.
I will finish it and who knows the last 200 pages may blow me away, I really hope they do.
