I finished The Final Empire a couple of days ago, and although the action hotted up a bit towards the end I was still left feeling distinctly underwhelmed.

I felt the same. The last 150-200 pages were fast-paced and superb, prior to that the house wars, raising a rebel army blah blah - it's all been done much better elsewhere and Sanderson just couldn't come up to the bar with it. I had to drag myself through the central reservation of this book, but i'm glad I got out the other side.

I've also been told book 2 is far superior in writing / plot so will continue the series unimpeded!

I just finished having started on Wednesday and I must say I enjoyed it! I wasn't planning on reading the other two quite yet but I have changed my mind on that front, I bought the Well of Ascension yesterday.

I really enjoyed it. Finished it last night, and raced through the end. Yes, the middle was slower paced, but I think it was necessary - the world building is absolutely superb, as is the foreshadowing, and without the middle section it couldn't have happened.

I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy now. I have reservations as to where it will go however, now that the heroes are at the top of the pile. I'm scared it might become too samey. Intrigued as to the magic system that is used to create Inquisitors though

I read on Brandon Sanderson's website that this year he is releasing a Mistborn novel set way, way into the future where their powers have developed (not 'their' because it is different characters - but 'their' as a race) and they have guns.... cool

if it makes you feel better, being "at the top" is only the beggining of their problems...

Well I finally got round to finishing this book (at least a week after every one else it seems!). Still, I thought I would share a few thoughts anyway, but don't let me distract you from February bookclub.

Like others, I did find the book a little simplistic in places. The political side of things was overly basic, reminding me of the early Raymond E Feist books and the ones with Jenny Wurts. (no one does politics like George R.R. Martin!). It really did pick up at the end though and, despite the flaws, I really enjoyed the books. I'm slightly skeptical about the next book, but others seem to be suggesting that the series actually improves.

The series really does improve, hang in there! (it's another of my favourites!)

Also love the type of magic here - Reckon it would translate brilliantly to the big screen (think Sanderson optioned the film rights in 2010)

The whole way through the book, I kept thinking that it would make an excellent film (or has the potential to anyway). Fingers crossed!

Both Sanderson and Abercrombie are very filmic in their visions for sure .....
