I can understand a lot of what others have said about the almost 'simplistic' writing style but I think it helped in getting me right into the world and the magic. Well, reflecting back on the novel a week or so after I've finished it, I probably will finish the series as I do like the way Sanderson writes.  I might try Way of Kings first and possibly even Elantris.  

I'm wondering too how he's going to carry the series through characterwise.  I think Vin did improve over the series, but she was definately not one of the best written female characters of all time.  I liked Sazed and Kelsier the best, they were pretty interesting characters.  

Was just thinking if it's worth you putting up a quick summary for each section we're supposed to read, as I can't remember now what happened in chapters 1-20 and what after it.

Well, looks like I will be reading the second book, sooner rather than later as I went into Waterstones today and they had their 3 books for the price of 2 offer on, so I got the Well of Ascension (plus Best Served Cold and Dragon Keeper  )

I have now read the first quarter of the book, I'll add some comments on it when I have got a bit further through.

I'm ploughing on (about three-quarters through) but I have to admit, I'm not dazzled. One or two others have said that the book reads like it's aimed at a young adult audience - I feel that too, and while that's not necessarily a bad thing, I do feel like I'm being led by the nose a little bit. I guess I'm comparing it with other fantasy I've read recently (JV Jones, Janny Wurts, PV Brett) and Sanderson's writing, at least in this book, just doesn't have the same depth and subtlety. (But then, I thought that about Robert Jordan too. Maybe it's just me.)

Having said that, it's a good story - I'm convinced by the magic system, and I'd quite like to visit Luthadel. (Except for the ash.) I want to know more about some of the characters (Breeze, Ham, Spook), but I'm pretty meh about both Kelsier (smug) and Vin (a bit dim, frankly). Elend seems like a cypher - I'm hoping he'll develop a bit more depth, because at the moment he's just annoying me.

Hoping to finish it in the next few days and get a review up on my blog. In the meantime, I've enjoyed all the comments here. Thanks, team!

I have now finished the book. I felt it got off to a weak start - by a quarter of the way through, I felt the characters were still very two dimensional. It picked up a bit in the middle of the book - with the parties and political intrigue. I guessed part of the Lord Ruler's secret about half way through. By the end I still didn't care very much about the characters. The magic system was okay, and this book would have been fine as a supplement to a roleplaying system.

I think I would have preferred to see more of the allomantic magic being used, before the mechanics were explained. I also think it would have been better if Vin's paranoia was shown to us through seeing her actions, rather than told to us via her internal monologue.

I finished The Final Empire a couple of days ago, and although the action hotted up a bit towards the end I was still left feeling distinctly underwhelmed. My previous comments re the characters and the writing style still stand - in the end I definitely wanted to like the book more than I did. I will probably read the sequel, though since reviews suggest that The Final Empire is the weakest of the Mistborn books. I hope that's true.

Sums up my feelings... I loved the style so much that I wanted to like the characters and story a bit more. Like you I will check out the remaining 2 books (another is due this year too, although it is about 200 pages?) just because people say it gets much better
