The kids woke up at half eight this morning, so I've read the prologue and the first chapter.  Liking it!!   ;D

Just finished Chapter 5 - wow... I have to say I'm impressed.

Brandon Sanderson's writing style is absolutely fantastic... I love how the World is crystal clear to me already and yet I can hardly remember more than a paragraph or two worth of description!

Loving the magic system so far too :) I won't post too much right now, but maybe tomorrow I'll post a bit more about my thoughts on the story - I don't want people to click on the thread and get spoilers - although so far there is not too much to spoil ;)

Just caught up with you and finished chapter 5 too!!  It's a very easy style to read and as you say, he describes the world very well without it seeming a whole load of description to plow through.

I'm just wondering who is the character writing the intro to each chapter in italics - someone we've already met, or a new character?  I like the portrayal of characters, Kelsier seems the most intriguing/interesting so far.  Not yet sure what I think of Vin, she seems just a bit too paranoid at the moment.   :-\

I presumed it was the lord ruler??? Just because of the "I'm the one with the armies" comment we had in the second chapter intro.

Agreed Vin seems very paranoid, but I guess if your brother who looked after you since child-hood betrayed you, you'd be so too :P I think she'll grow though, surrounded by all these powerful characters she will have to in order to keep her place in the book.

I have read on a bit further and was trying not to mention stuff, but silly me put in a character not in chapters 1-5 so I've edited it out!!   ::)

I'm not thinking it is the lord ruler as he calls himself the Hero of Ages so I reckon it's someone else.

Unless the Lord Ruler thinks of himself as a Hero... You are probably right though as it seems this is a 'Hero'... nothing about the Lord Ruler paints him as such.

There are a few things Brandon does very very well: world-building, magic systems and epic stories. I didn't have to get too far into this book before I decided to buy the other two books in the series.

Just an FYI: Brandon's website has some "DVD Extras" (sorry, I couldn't think of a better shorthand way of putting that)  where he annotates each chapter of the books. I found them after I read the books, but someone may want to read them as they progress through the book: http://brandonsanderson.com/portal/Mistborn-Trilogy

This is what Brandon Sanderson says on his site about the italics;

Somewhere in the italicized pre-chapter blurb of the prologue here is the clue one needs to figure out the over-arching mystery of the entire series. If you figure it out, good for you! If you don't, you'll have to wait until the last chapter of the final book to get it explained. . . .

I've read just about half of the book now, so I think I have a better idea of the italics character, but I won't say anything till we get further on in the chapters.   :P

Whilst I'm loving the other characters and the world, I'm still not convinced about Vin as a person - maybe she'll develop better as the book/series goes on.  It's rare I don't identify with characters, the only other book that happened in was Joe Abercrombie's the blade itself when I found I just didn't connect with any of his characters.

I had an "Oh, RIGHT" moment when I went back and re-read the bump passage at the beginning of the Prologue. Of course, I may be wrong, not having read the book before.  ;)

I'm nearly at the end of C5, and I have to admit I'm not totally into it yet. The writing style is immersive, but there have been one or two (very minor) editorial inconsistencies that have left me feeling not entirely comfortable while I'm reading. (I should probably point out that I'm a freelance editor in one of my many incarnations, so this type of stuff bothers me a lot more than the average reader.)

However - great magic system (wish I'd invented it), intriguing characters, nice start to the grand heist storyline, and I'm enjoying the chapter notes at brandonsanderson.com. I like Kelsier (he reminds me a bit of Locke Lamora), and I totally get Vin's paranoia (nicely done, although laid on a bit thick at times).

Onward and upward. :)

What made me laugh is when Brandon Sanderson said; 'I wanted this chapter to feel like Ocean's Eleven', not sure if you read my review on 'Lies of Locke Lamora' earlier today but I said; 'It feels like Ocean's Eleven' - lol... totally bizarre! :D He is indeed very much like Locke, I think a few chapters of this novel are actually reminiscent to Locke's story (not a bad thing).

The writing style really is brilliant - I can see why people are so thrilled by him taking on TWoT and how he got away with writing a 1000+ page book... I'm actually quite into the story, the one thing I didn't like so far was the fight scene... but then reading the notes it said 'I didn't like this fight scene but explained why he had to keep it' so I was like... OK... I'll let it go. lol.

Good choice so far guys... I wonder where all the others are? 12 of us were meant to be reading it... I wonder if they are fully engrossed? lol!

The others are busy reading probably!!   ;D

I'm up to chapter 27 now, so please stop me from getting confused if I mention anything I shouldn't!!  lol.  The author is very much concentrating on the two characters, I wonder if he will branch out and go into more detail for others on the crew.  I didn't like Ocean's Eleven, so maybe that's why I'm not totally enamoured with the book, yet.  So far, I'd give it nearly a 4 out of 5.

Just finished the first section - absolutely love the writing style - really, really do. Like some others have said, I'm still a bit 'eh...' with Vin, I mean... I know she has had it hard... but time to; man-up! You have powers, no one can mess with you any more girl! :)

I think maybe Brandon Sanderson just tried very, very hard to enforce into our minds that she is weak / un-trusting, but also that this is a strength - perhaps it will play a big part in the book later on.

I've got used to reading during the day when the kids are about, don't know how but if the book is interesting I can kind of drown out some of the background noise!!   :o  oh, and having a husband who works shifts helps, as I read most evenings instead of watching the tv.   ;D

Hey peeps,

Im back at work now so should be able to get here daily. Started this a couple of days ago and Im on page 5-600 ish and I must say I am not impressed. I find the story pretty boring, for me there is nothing new.
The characters are very linear, there is no real history or depth to them {apart from Kell and Vin}. Vin I find nothing but annoying, although this may be intentional. The read is an easy one and I can see how ppl would like this, but after reading Steven Erikson and Scott Lynch last year Im finding this run of the mill.
Maybe I have just read to much fantasy and generalise books/storys to much. Sorry to be the ONLY ONE to slate this book but I think in this day and age we need something better.
The magic system is ok but very similar to using elemental type magic or even lay lines, maybe Im just being to cynical or maybe Im just a miserable old git, either way not impressed so far.

Take Care all....Jay

I'm actually glad I'm not the only one thinking that about Vin.

It's probably a personal thing, but I prefer a fantasy to have an actual quest including travel, the thing about this book which could make it less interesting for some people is that it is set virtually all in one city.  I do feel that Vin is very two dimensional myself and slightly on the annoying side.

Having said that, I do like his style of writing, I'm not sure whether I'll finish off the trilogy though, given what happens in the first at the end.  I'll say no more though!!   :P

Still sounds like my feelings about this book are warranted I will finish it by the end of the week.

Glad you guys are enjoying it! I'm just over half way through now and it's getting very good. I think you will warm to Vin as the book progresses, I think that was my only problem with the book initially, but once you adjust to her as a character and learn her 'traits' so to speak it's fine :)

I sat and read about 90 pages this morning :)

Looks like it ;) I can see reasons not to like it - you really do have to work to accept Vin, I certainly don't 'like' her and so far I don't really care what happens to her... in fact if she died I wouldn't mind too much - it might speed up the whole thing, lol.

But the story telling, the world the novel is set in, the magic system, it's all fantastic. I think 'Way of the Kings' if the style is similar (I know the story is great - I read a synopsis on it) will be EPIC!

M8 to be fair Im having trouble relating to all the characters. For a book thats 700 pages+ {I think} I think we should have had a lot more depth so far. It's very rare I take a dislike to a book and being 500+ pages in Im finding it very poor. There should be far more intrigue going on, the political element to the book is so poor it's embarasing, I find the story linear and predictable. I really wish I did like it, perhaps I just don't like the authors writing style?
At times I find myself rushing to read pages as I am that bored. The only thing I like so far is the image thats been built up of the steel inquisitors and Im sure thats only because of the spikes through the eyes scenario, as I have a very vivid image of what they look like.
I honestly can't think of a book I have read over the last few years that has been this dissappointing in my opinion.
I will finish it and who knows the last 200 pages may blow me away, I really hope they do.

I can't comment much because I am only just over 50% through it so far and it's not really 'exciting' as such yet, it is still quite obviously 'building'. I know some people though who have said the series gets stronger and stronger as you progress through it. I am enjoying it more than I did Black Prism so far, but not as much as say The Painted Man.

I'm looking to finish it in the next day or so, I'm 75% through. It's not an action packed ride by any means, but it is full of fantastic writing, an amazing magic system and some very good characters. Apparently this series only gets better too:

@FantasyFaction The series gets better as it goes along. I really must get my arse over to the forum and point that out to people.
@FantasyFaction Actually, the same can be said for all of Brandon's writing. The Way of Kings is head-and-shoulders above Mistborn.

Also, Brandon Sanderson Tweeted me to apologise for keeping me up until a ridiculous time of night after I Tweeted that I was tired due to staying up late reading 'The Final Empire' lol.

I did some conversions and it seems that £8.99 is about $13.97 here in the States. That is pretty close to ($12.99) to what the Kindle price is here. It is a lot better than $27.99 (or £18.00) regular hardcover price. When it gets released to paperback, the Kindle price usually drops to $7.99 (£5.13). It looks like the paperback release is June 2011.

I was able to use some giftcards to get my copy of The Way of the Kings and The Black Prism. I was able to get both online for $32.00 (£20.58) which is a steal since it would have cost $53.98 (£34.72) to buy them in a store.

Brandon doesnt go too in depth with the rest of the crew, which I think was just about everyones complaint. he adds depth to a couple more characters that grow in importance as the series progresses.

I added the book to GoodReads under the Currently-Reading so that it is prominently displayed and people know what we are reading.

When the February book is decided, we can put that up as a Future Read.

When it gets released to paperback, the Kindle price usually drops to $7.99 (£5.13). It looks like the paperback release is June 2011.

I'm waiting for the paperback to come out then, it's not as if I don't have enough other books to choose from in the meanwhile!!   ;D

FINISHED! :)

Review will be on the main page over the next few days (no spoilers will be on it)

Really enjoyed it. It took a while to get going in all honesty... It started off really well and then things went a big dull with the whole ball thing and Kelsier visiting certain places doing the same things, but overall I think it worked very well as a first novel.

One thing I am not so keen on is the 'fighting', Sanderson doesn't seem a natural when it comes to describing a fight. He is brilliant at everything else, but the fight scenes were by far the weakest part of his writing. To me they seemed very, very vivid.

I was ok with the fight scenes, I thought the weakest part of his book was the characterisation of Vin, maybe he's just not as good at writing from a female perspective, as the male characters were alright.

Yeah, you can talk up to half way through now :) We will say Chapter 20 as I know most people are past that point.

Finished this last week and I am still not impressed, is it just me or was the end of the book very rushed?
I will not be finishing this series which is very unusual for me.
No offence to those that have liked it, but Brandon Sanderson is not for me...

I just bought this book today, and although my books to read list is about 6 months long at the moment I figured I could bump this one up for the book club - I'll be reading it as soon as I've finished the series I'm reading at the mo :D

Just finished "The Final Empire", and I have mixed feelings about it. Overall I thought it was a pretty good book and I probably have most of the same compliments/complaints as most people. I've read "The Way of Kings", but none of Brandon Sanderson's other works (I'm currently re-reading WoT in order to get to the newer books), so while I have detected an 'evolution' of sorts in Sanderson's writing I don't know if my next statement will generalize towards his other books or not.....

I felt like for "The Final Empire" it almost has a Young Adult style to it. Does anyone else feel that way? It's not intended as a complaint really, because I still thought the book was pretty good. Its hard to put into words, but despite some of the gory-ish scenes his writing felt kind of ... simple to me. I felt slightly different reading "The Way of Kings",  but for me "The Final Empire" lacked some of the subtleties and complexities found in other fantasy novels. But don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it! It was a first time read for me and I finished it in about 2 days, so obviously something had hooked me.  :)

I don't think that this has any kind of 2nd half spoilers, I saw it on the GoodReads site:

If you were a misting in Mistborn: The Final Empire which would you like to be?

I would be a coinshot. I think that is the single coolest power for a misting to have.

Yeah I must say I am mixed now I've finished. The ending was a bit... eck... and the characters were a bit... well... eck... too. I mean, when I compare it to say; Night Angel Trilogy - the characters just don't compare, Painted Man - No where near as well paced, the fight scenes were so, so vivid too.

Things I did like; The writing style was fantastic, the 'image' of the Lord Ruler was great, the magic system, the explanation of the magic system, the contrast of the levels of nobility, etc. I think it was a very good story that was perhaps told in a rather 'weak' way... saying that, Brandon Sanderson was a relatively new author when he wrote this book and from what I have heard his work only gets better.

I will certainly finish the series, but I'm gonna give it 5-6 months... I can't take another dose of Vin paranoia right now ;)

I would be a Lurcher I think...

That's pretty much exactly what I thought too.  I'll read Way of Kings before I finish off the trilogy I think.

I don't know. I'm almost finished with part 3 and I'm still really enjoying it. I'm curious to see where this plot with Elend and his cronies go. Vin is becoming slightly less annoying ^.^

And just finished it *grins* I really enjoyed it. I can understand a lot of what others have said about the almost 'simplistic' writing style but I think it helped in getting me right into the world and the magic. I really do want to keep reading the series because I think it can only get better! *excited*

Completely agree with that quote - I am very, very eager to see how things progress no that

Well, reflecting back on the novel a week or so after I've finished it, I probably will finish the series as I do like the way Sanderson writes.  I might try Way of Kings first and possibly even Elantris.

I'm wondering too how he's going to carry the series through characterwise.  I think Vin did improve over the series, but she was definately not one of the best written female characters of all time.  I liked Sazed and Kelsier the best, they were pretty interesting characters.

Was just thinking if it's worth you putting up a quick summary for each section we're supposed to read, as I can't remember now what happened in chapters 1-20 and what after it.    :o

I'm ploughing on (about three-quarters through) but I have to admit, I'm not dazzled. One or two others have said that the book reads like it's aimed at a young adult audience - I feel that too, and while that's not necessarily a bad thing, I do feel like I'm being led by the nose a little bit. I guess I'm comparing it with other fantasy I've read recently (JV Jones, Janny Wurts, PV Brett) and Sanderson's writing, at least in this book, just doesn't have the same depth and subtlety. (But then, I thought that about Robert Jordan too. Maybe it's just me.)

Having said that, it's a good story - I'm convinced by the magic system, and I'd quite like to visit Luthadel. (Except for the ash.) I want to know more about some of the characters (Breeze, Ham, Spook), but I'm pretty meh about both Kelsier (smug) and Vin (a bit dim, frankly). Elend seems like a cypher - I'm hoping he'll develop a bit more depth, because at the moment he's just annoying me.

Hoping to finish it in the next few days and get a review up on my blog. In the meantime, I've enjoyed all the comments here. Thanks, team!

I have now finished the book. I felt it got off to a weak start - by a quarter of the way through, I felt the characters were still very two dimensional. It picked up a bit in the middle of the book - with the parties and political intrigue. I guessed part of the Lord Ruler's secret about half way through. By the end I still didn't care very much about the characters. The magic system was okay, and this book would have been fine as a supplement to a roleplaying system.

I think I would have preferred to see more of the allomantic magic being used, before the mechanics were explained. I also think it would have been better if Vin's paranoia was shown to us through seeing her actions, rather than told to us via her internal monologue.

I finished The Final Empire a couple of days ago, and although the action hotted up a bit towards the end I was still left feeling distinctly underwhelmed. My previous comments re the characters and the writing style still stand - in the end I definitely wanted to like the book more than I did. I will probably read the sequel, though since reviews suggest that The Final Empire is the weakest of the Mistborn books. I hope that's true.

I've put a longer review up on my blog. :)

Sums up my feelings... I loved the style so much that I wanted to like the characters and story a bit more. Like you I will check out the remaining 2 books (another is due this year too, although it is about 200 pages?) just because people say it gets much better :)

I felt the same. The last 150-200 pages were fast-paced and superb, prior to that the house wars, raising a rebel army blah blah - it's all been done much better elsewhere and Sanderson just couldn't come up to the bar with it. I had to drag myself through the central reservation of this book, but i'm glad I got out the other side.

I've also been told book 2 is far superior in writing / plot so will continue the series unimpeded!

I really enjoyed it. Finished it last night, and raced through the end. Yes, the middle was slower paced, but I think it was necessary - the world building is absolutely superb, as is the foreshadowing, and without the middle section it couldn't have happened.

I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy now. I have reservations as to where it will go however, now that the heroes are at the top of the pile. I'm scared it might become too samey. Intrigued as to the magic system that is used to create Inquisitors though :D

I think I can say this without it being a spoiler?

I read on Brandon Sanderson's website that this year he is releasing a Mistborn novel set way, way into the future where their powers have developed (not 'their' because it is different characters - but 'their' as a race) and they have guns.... cool :D

Well I finally got round to finishing this book (at least a week after every one else it seems!). Still, I thought I would share a few thoughts anyway, but don't let me distract you from February bookclub.

Like others, I did find the book a little simplistic in places. The political side of things was overly basic, reminding me of the early Raymond E Feist books and the ones with Jenny Wurts. (no one does politics like George R.R. Martin!). It really did pick up at the end though and, despite the flaws, I really enjoyed the books. I'm slightly skeptical about the next book, but others seem to be suggesting that the series actually improves.

Anyway, I posted a review here for anyone who wants to read it: http://definitivereviews.blogspot.com/ (http://definitivereviews.blogspot.com/)

The series really does improve, hang in there! (it's another of my favourites!)

Also love the type of magic here - Reckon it would translate brilliantly to the big screen (think Sanderson optioned the film rights in 2010)
