Title: [Jan 2016] - Breaking the fourth wall - Voting Thread
Post by: ScarletBea on February 01, 2016, 12:44:54 PM
It's time to vote on January's Writing Contest: Breaking the Fourth Wall

We got 18 entries this month!

Thanks to all of you for participating - let's make 2016 even a better year than 2015, which was great :D

Please read through all of the entries in the submission thread and place your votes for your four favourite entries in this thread. You won't be able to see the vote breakdown until the vote closes, so spread the word for others to come and vote! We do ask that if you entered, to vote for someone else.

The key for the numbers of votes is this: 1-5 entries: 1 vote, 5-10 entries: 2 votes, 11-15 entries: 3 votes, 16-19: 4 votes, 20-25: 5 votes, 26+: 6 votes

Remember that the winning entry will be posted on the main Fantasy-Faction site in a few months.

Good luck to all our entrants and thank you for taking the time to read the stories and vote! :)

look at all these options!

the ugly rtf document is for @ScarletBea (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=32020) -- she likes to print them out.  this one, bea, is probably better than the html doc i gave you last time, but i really just need to take the time and make a nice stylesheet for it.

Thanks @m3mnoch (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40419)! And there are a lot of entries, I guess this theme inspired a lot of people.

Thanks @m3mnoch (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40419) my computer doesn't like your pretty nice text - says bits are missing ::)
But it loves the ugly rich text and so do I cos I can play around with the layout and read it more easily.

Do appreciate that you do this for us  ;D

I love the epubs. They're awesome.

Folks may need to read mine in the Forum itself, though, to enjoy it as much as I hope you will.
It uses spoilers extensively, and these don't translate to ebook that well, I think.

Thanks, just opened it and could format everything to my heart's content ;D

Just one watch out: all the stories after the one that alternated straight font with italics showed up in italics, I brought them back to normal.
So many, and less days!!! At least I've already read 2 during the month...

I think I read about half the stories, randomly, and I'm still not sure if everyone understands the theme as I view it.
Then again, it does make job easier, because I've already found 2 I must vote for, hehe

Voted, but it's taken two weekends and I've read them all twice to make a very painful decision. Enjoyed every single one and had to be so tough to choose the last four.

Thank you all so much, that turned out to be one of the best topics and made me laugh often. Some of the ways you managed to break that wall were varied and clever, but I think everyone did even if not always in the conventional sense. ;)

Eleven voters so far and no story has more than four votes. So this time everything is still open! :)

Oh definitely! I wrote "as I view it" because I think *I* don't quite get it, or maybe don't like it much. So I feel this will be quite a difficult one to vote for because each person has got their own ideas.
Just like Xia pointed out that there is no clear winner at this point in time, each person has its own ideas of what 'works' :)

Running a bit behind this month.
Voted!

I'm surprised at...
the sheer number of stories in which the characters argue with the writer.
No, you're not.
Yes, I really am.
No, you expected this.
I did not. And who are you anyway?
Wouldn' t you just like to know?

we should make an attempt at some sort of tie-breaking procedure.

like, people not involved with the tie have to only pick one.  could even be a new thread.  if it's still a tie?  well, looks like it's a tie.

Yay, Thanks Bea, and whoever else found my private joke drug trip good.

Congrat m3m, I nearly voted for you, but not being much used to board games, I found the joke a tiny wee bit out of topic, and gave my vote instead to another I liked as much. Ended in you not needing my help.  :P

I voted for @Nestat (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6540), @Nerf (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=41035), @tebakutis (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=31262) and @OnlyOneHighlander (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=35404) It was a close call between three of these to become my favorite, but I think OnlyOneHighlander steals it, because his story is

The end was just horrible to read, for someone who is battling cat fleas at the moment. I really felt for the poor character and loved the savage portrayal of the writer. That's who we are, totalitarian gods. xD

OMG YES!!!

i won, guys!  did you see that?!?  i NEVER win!

thank you so very much!  i just LOVE everybody right now!  WOOT!

... ahem.

*whew*

i'm truly honored.  there were lots of fun stories this month.  i kid you not -- i snortled, chuckled, or giggled at least once (after the first couple stories, i started counting) in every story that was funny.  after reading through all of them, it was so hard to pick one to win.  in the end, @tebakutis (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=31262) and his sponges were my favorite this month.  followed closely by @OnlyOneHighlander (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=35404) for his twisting/twisted plot and @Jmack (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=37094) for the innovation.  (i LOVE choose your own adventure stories)  my fourth vote, tho?  man, i had to choose (obviously from the results!) from like, half a dozen fabulous stories.  and, i couldn't.  so, i ended up just dropping my last vote, @Raptori (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=38840) style.

again, thanks guys!  i'm on cloud nine!

Mwahaha!

But last month I voted for both you and Jmack pretty late too, so I guess there I help set up the triple tie   ::)
On this one I got the tie breaker!

As for the votes:

@Nestat (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6540) --> I liked how he played with the words.

@m3mnoch (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40419) --> Silly unlucky knight and his rolls.

@Lady_Ty (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=31869) --> The descriptions reminded me of Agatha Christie style. Then I read that Orient Express reference. Yup, totally got my vote.

@tebakutis (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=31262) --> RPG section reference. If the sponge was a reference to something else, I didn't got it, but it was pretty funny anyway.

And about my own, thanks to those who voted for it! I'm also pretty happy, as I got double the amount of votes than last time, which is a sign of improvement  ;D

You don't need to feel bad, Bea. I'd already worked it out anyway.

And, occasional tongue-in-cheek joke aside, I'm actually perfectly happy with 2nd place. I really wasn't expecting to do all that well this month anyway considering how many really great entries there were (seriously, I'd call this one of the best since Space Opera) and the fact that a ton of them did the same 'talking to writer' concept I used. So it was a rather nice surprise learning how close I came. Guess I'll have to wait until next time to try and get three in a row.

Plus I finished in front of my eternal rival Jmack. So much for the "risk that JMack might come out ahead of me" being too much to bear. Nyahaha! *twiddles moustache

The ones you voted for should be bold in the list at the top of this thread.  ;)

They should be, but my phone refuses to let me see them or the entire poll. Ill have to look later although it doesn't much matter.

Congratulations @m3mnoch (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40419), fun story I enjoyed especially becos dragon, and a close finish. Absolutely bumper selection, but my final choices were for Nora, Jmack, OnlyOneHighlander and night_wrtr,. Will explain what I liked about them later or in crit thread but unfortunately have to go out now.

Lanko, thank you for your vote, the AC style was unintentional, but see what you mean and appreciate the comparison, very flattering ;)    I was thrilled to gather 3 votes, hope you all know I only do this for fun and not competitive, so any votes are a treat.

Can't believe I actually forgot to vote  ::) The good thing is that it wouldn't have made a difference anyway, so big congratulations to @m3mnoch (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40419)!  :)

Well done to @m3mnoch (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40419)!

This challenge was a lot of fun and all the wall breaking has inspired me to check out a certain Mr D Pool's new film this weekend...

Thanks to all those who voted for my story. My very old laptop finally went to join the calculators in silicon heaven this month so I didn't manage to get a story in for February, but I hope to be back in action soon (using my work computer to post this... Ahem, I mean working on those meeting minutes, honest)
