Alright, January is the time for New Year's Resolutions. Too early in the year to give up and have excuses, right? Well, our book club read is going to be Garden's of the Moon by Steven Erikson. The start to a very established series in the genre. One that I have put off reading for one reason or another. One that I will finally get to check off my list and find out what it is that so many people love about the series and why some people have such the opposite reaction. It does seem to be a marmite book, but that's good because it should give ample opportunity for lively discussions as we hear why some people love it and why others just don't. Personally, I am really looking forward to this one and hope that a good number of people decide to join in the discussions:

Bled dry by warfare, the vast Malazan empire simmers with discontent. Sergeant Whiskeyjack's Bridgeburners and surviving sorceress Tattersail wanted to mourn the dead of Pale. But Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities, holds out, Empress Lasseen’s ambition knows no bounds, and the gods intend to intervene.

Discussion Break Points:

Week 1: Prologue & Book One
Week 2: Book Two & Book Three
Week 3: Book Four & Book Five
Week 4: Finished

YAY!  :D Really looking forward to reading this one with the book club. Partly because I'm really intrigued after all the warnings about it ;D, and also because if it IS really hard to understand, then if there is a bunch of us reading it together we can help each other figure it out. Hopefully there will be lots of fun discussion anyway!

I think it was one of the first books I bought after joining FF. Still unread on my shelf - time to change that!

Happy to see this win! I'll hopefully reread in the (vague) hope of getting a bit further into the series in 2014 (I've been stuck in the middle of Deadhouse Gates for 2 years...) but if for some reason I don't have time I can quite easily discuss it anyway.  :)

(FYI: I'm not sure 4 Weekly threads will be enough for this one!)

I'm so happy to see the one I voted for finally got chosen. The Malazan books have been on my to-read list ever since I started reading fantasy.

Also this is gonna be the first time I participate in this forum after months reading other people's stuff without posting anything myself so kinda look forward to the discussions.

Never read any of the Malazan book, so I think that I will also join in. I have always heard good things about this series and I think that I would like it a lot.

Welcome! Glad you decided to join in.  ;D

Happy everyone else is joining in as well. Hopefully as Victoria said, we can help each other through. Share whatever great finds or frustrating questions we may have as we read this one.

Count me in! This is a series I have been meaning to read for a long time. I have started it on several occasions but every time I stopped for one reason or another. Maybe this will be the time I get all the way through it!

I just grabbed a copy from the library so I'm going to take an early look and see...  I'm not immediately hooked by the jacket blurb, but I'm willing to give it a go.

Someone suggested The Malazan Empire books to me just this week. Seems like a good time to start.
