I read the first chapter, and didn't understand a thing.  I apparently was not in the right frame of mind for reading.  I'll be starting over now...

I am pretty sure I read some reviews that mentioned getting thrown into the story and not being able to figure out what was going on until later. And they were positive reviews that recommended the book, I think the point was to stick with it. I haven't read the book yet, so I can't comment personally, just passing along hearsay.  ;D

I know it's also written in a deliberately abrupt style - supposedly to reflect the military nature of the characters.

Appreciating the prior warning! xD Itching to get started.

Thus far I haven't been able to find a copy so will have to sit this one out unless I can get my hands on it before the end of the month (and speed read my way upto point)

Sorry, was really looking forward to it 'n all. :(

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Just an FYI incase you don't already know. This book is also available packaged within an omnibus (The Chronicles of the Black Company). The Omnibus version contains the first three books (which I think cover 1 story arc). And if you do happen to find it in one form or another, it is a relatively short book (only about 300 pages). And this first week, we covered only one chapter (out of 7). So it should be an easy one to catch up on if you do happen to luck out and locate a copy :)

Really dumb question to ask an avid reader but did you check the library system?

I just checked the cover in the first post and it's incredibly ugly compared to my cover, which is one of the coolest ever. ;)

Yep. I definitely like that one better too (and its the one on my eBook). But it's the omnibus cover, so I had to use the cover that is just for the book we are reading :)
