Title: [Feb 2017] - Fanfic - Voting Thread
Post by: ScarletBea on March 02, 2017, 10:03:28 AM
It's time to vote on February's Writing Contest: Fanfic!

We got just 8 entries this month - thanks to all who participated!

Please read through all of the entries in the submission thread and place your votes for your two favourite entries in this thread. You won't be able to see the vote breakdown until the vote closes, so spread the word for others to come and vote! We do ask that if you entered, to vote for someone else.

The key for the numbers of votes is this: 1-5 entries: 1 vote, 5-10 entries: 2 votes, 11-15 entries: 3 votes, 16-19: 4 votes, 20-25: 5 votes, 26+: 6 votes

Remember that the winning entry will be posted on the main Fantasy-Faction site in a few months.

Good luck to all our entrants and thank you for taking the time to read the stories and vote! :)

One day I'll get the counting of the days right... ::)
@xiagan, could you please reduce one day for voting (ending on April 1)?

Only one stood out for me this month. Though that's more a reflection on my view of FanFiction than a comment on writing quality.

Just another Bea mistake don't worry about it, it's becoming traditional it wouldn't be the monthly contest without them ;-)

Half hoping that we could watch the progress once we had voted in some secret way, if we promised not to tell those who hadn't voted ;D ;D

:P :P

This is a new thing, might come from some upgrade. I'm not sure, but I think it means at the end you'll all be able to see how many votes each story got, instead of just me who created the thread.

But if you think that's a mistake and don't want to see votes, just take my word for who won, I might be able to change it... ;D

There's another new thing. We can allow vote comments. Should we try this? No idea how it will be.

No idea, we have to try it out somewhere. :)

Another more important thing:
With the new options we now can see who voted for what (thanks for finding out, @Eclipse).
I do not want that for the writing contests. People are allowed and free to share their votes but the possibility to remain anonymous should be there.
Problem is, it's only possible to change this when setting up the poll. It's the only part of it that can't be edited later.
So, regarding this month's voting, I'm of a mind to remove the poll and make a new one, pming all the voters who voted already to please vote again.
What do you think?

Nor me. I voted but it's the same as usual, can't see any other votes.
NOW seen polls w results on Eclipse's read next poll and see what you mean. Not a good  idea for writing contest. We choose or not to tell who we voted for. Some people take trouble to vote but remain otherwise uninvolved and prefer it that way.

Okay, there's a shiny, new poll there now. Please vote (again)!

I won't message the people who voted already to do so again because I think most saw it. I'll check in a week again and if some of the old voters haven't voted until then, I'll remind them.

If you already voted but forgot for what story, ask, and I shall provide the details of your vote. ;)

Then I really struggle between two fantastic second-place contenders.
May change my mind again.........

Agreed. I tried to put aside whether I knew the story and just decide if this story and characters came through. But still, there's that fan-service pleasure from seeing what's done wth the things you've enjoyed reading.

It might backfire, though. If you haven't read the original there's less chance of you being annoyed at what was done to the characters ;D

I think there's a few categories of reaction:

1.) You've read the original, the fan fiction writer captured the characters well, and you had fun with it

2.) You've read the original, the fan fiction writer did not capture the characters well, and you're annoyed with it

3.) You haven't read the original, the fan fiction writer wrote a story as independent of all of the world-building done in the original as possible, and you enjoyed the story in its own right.

4.) You haven't read the original, the fan fiction writer wrote a story heavily dependent on background knowledge obtained from the original, and you did not understand what was going on.

I think it is very difficult to write something that falls into category 3, especially if you're taking the setting from a massive saga and writing a 1500 word short story.

Yay! Thanks to all who voted for me!

Trivia: I actually had a "safe" instead of "save" right at the beginning. Oops.

And White Port, mentioned by Tyrion, doesn't actually exist. I've only read GoT in Portuguese and the closest similar-looking name is White Harbor, which is Manderley's domain. King's Landing was translated to "Royal Port", so "White Port" was supposed to be King's Landing. Oops².

I wonder how people being familiarized with the stories influenced this.

I voted for @m3mnoch and @Alex Hormann exactly because of that. They were actually the only ones I knew the characters. And Rukaio's Dresden.

tebakutis' story was interesting. I know Narnia has a lion on the book covers, but I had no idea the lion actually talked. Or why his words were capitalized.

He's supposed to represent God, or Jesus, sacrificing himself for the good of the people. Hence the capitalisation, hehe
(I only discovered this several years after reading the stories, though)

In my opinion, all of these stories deserved my vote ... as ever, there was an impressively high quality bar all around.

My votes went to @Rukaio_Alter and @Alex Hormann, but I could have voted for any of these. Had to make a choice.

The Significantly More Destructive Wizard of Oz by Rukaio_Alter - As with all Rukaio's stories, the pacing and humor here was great, but this one got my vote purely for the last line.

Foundation and Final Empire by Alex Hormann - This was just a very solid story all around, dialogue-wise and writing-wise, and I liked the interplay between the protagonists of the two worlds. Also, the conceit of landing on the world via a shuttle from elsewhere.

The other stories all had awesome elements as well.

@Jmack - You tortured Winnie the Pooh! I never thought I'd read a story where someone tortured Winnie the Pooh, but now I can check that box off my list.

@LightRunner - This was a really clever idea for a crossover, and felt consistent with both worlds. And the writing was excellent.

@Lanko - I thought this was really clever in how the characters from each world reacted to each other's very different books. Apparently Sauron has nothing on Cersei.

@m3mnoch - LOL you slaughtered the cast of Twilight.

@gennerik - Oh, and even though I *hated* the first Thomas Covenant book and never moved on from there (it was a DNF for me) from what I remember, you captured the character/writing style really well, and though I didn't enjoy the book, I *did* like him constantly getting annoyed at being called a hero. And again, excellent writing.

Congrats, @Lanko!

@tebakutis Thanks for the positive comment - I appreciate it. I voted for your story because I thought you captured the dynamic of the characters in The Magicians really well.

My other vote went to @m3mnoch. I'm not familiar with Logen Ninefingers, but you wrote the character completely enough that I could enjoy the story regardless. And I appreciated the outsider perspective on the "Twilight" characters; I thought it was very well done.
