Title: [Feb 2017] - Fanfic - Discussion Thread
Post by: xiagan on January 31, 2017, 09:09:41 PM
Fanfic

[Didn't find a fitting image on time, will probably add one later. Sorry.]

This is the fourth year we do Fanfic February and we weren't sure if it would be boring by now or not. We got a great idea to give the topic a nice spin, so we don't think it is!
The first year (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/(feb-2014)-fanfic/) you could write whatever you wanted, the second year (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/(feb-2015)/) we limited the books you could choose from. The third year (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/(feb-2016)-fanfic/) you had to stage a fight between two main protags (or groups of main characters) from different books/series and this year...

... the main character(s) of one book or series fell out of their book and landed in another book.
They could be messing up the other book's story, take the place of the other book's MCs or just walk around and try to figure out where they are. Kelsier and Vin meeting the Fellowship of the Ring and decide to join the quest? Rincewind finding himself in the Broken Empire, trying (as always) to survive? Eli Monpress teaming up with Hadrian Blackwater (instead of Royce)?
The possiblities are endless but none will be easy to write. ;)

I'm not limiting you to special books but remember that it's more fun for your readers if they know the characters. So if you choose something obscure, not everbody will get the jokes in or the awesomeness of your story. ;)

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. Has to be fan fiction and has to contain characters from one book/series in another book's/series' world.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-750 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys next to the 'youtube' symbol.

If you want so submit your story anonymous you can do so by sending it in a personal message to @xiagan.

Entry will close Feb 28th/Mar 1st, 2017 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.
Submitting a story counts as published. The author retains all rights to their work.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/(feb-2017)/(feb-2017)-fanfic-submission-thread/).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

Was a bit rushed this month. Sorry for that. If you find any mistakes feel free to point them out or keep them. :)

I'll admit to not being FanFiction's biggest, um, fan, but I'm sure I can come up with something. Will have to put some thought into this one. Or I could just pull two random books of the shelf and see what I can do with them.  8)

Nooooooooooooo.....!!!!

I'd forgotten february was fanfic.

I still hate fanfic.

But I kinda don't want to miss out on a month...

But wow do I loath fanfic, I don't even like reading the other contributions....

Anyway, how about that for pictures :

My issues with fanfiction aside, as one of the, uh, how to phrase this ... least well-read?   :-\ Narrowest-read?  >:( Finickiest?  ::) Anyway, as the reader with one of the smallest "I read that" lists in this auspicious company, I hope I am able to follow the stories  ;D

As for writing one? I'm not a funny writer, so I doubt I could follow Jmack's lead. Although, it would be sort of funny if Link showed up at Helm's Deep with his slingshot.

Yeah, it's kinda hard to build drama on pre-existing characters. Either the reader knows exactly what happened to them or they know them by name, or worse not at all. So finding the perfect balance of exposition in order to pull off anything emotional is discouragingly hard.
Comedy is easier, because if it's well made we can sort of not need to know the characters much.

To be honest I think I'll scrap this month entirely and go focus on my main story, even though the writing group is pretty dead. I want to try and be more efficient and focused, so maybe it'll help to take a month off.

Quote

I think that's why I so strongly dislike fanfic. Maybe, mayyybe I'd feel more at ease writting a piece of fanfic if it were on some kind of fandom forum. Aka, since I'm a rabid fannibal, I could write a story including Will Graham, make 'puppy overlord' jokes, and everyone would get it. Even in the example set, I have never read Eli Montpress and have no clue at all who Hadrian or Royce are, and what book they come out of.
It makes voting a real pain too, since it can cut off a lot of the pleasure from reading someone's story, even though they'll be very deserving if I'd known the character, etc.
The characters I'd enjoy writing about are the twisted types flowing out of books like Red Dragon, Vicious, The Bloody Chambers or American Elsewhere. No one's read that stuff. In a fandom-free forum like ours (though dare I say @Lanko and I are in a two-persons fandom here?), it's a very hard exercise.

Beyond those issues, there is also the discomfort, as far as I'm concerned, of separating character from the original author's prose. I struggle to see characters like Sanderson's in my hands, because we write nothing like each other. Can a character remain true to itself enough to be enjoyable, while written in a completely different style?

This being said, it's all a compliment to people who manage to make it work. I never intentionally go looking for it, but if I find great fanfic, I applaud.

So good luck everyone!

Wow, this is going to be rough.

Hah, I forgot February was fanfic! Last year, I wrote a fanfic where Nathan Drake (from Uncharted) and Lara Croft (from the Tomb Raider reboot) got in a fight. They both had books written about them, so technically, it was fair game!

No one voted for it, though, since most hadn't played the games in question. Heh.

I might do the same thing this year, since these contests are more about fun than votes. The problem is, there's no Fire Emblem books out there. That said, there have been a number of novels written in the Mass Effect universe... :0

Anyway, my advice is just find something you think is fun and excites you and write that.

I think I might have found a pair of book titles I can smash together, so that's the angle I'll be working from.

Also, I now need to go back and find that Drake/Croft bust-up.

I'll be honest, for me, the question this month is less going to be 'What two stories will I mix?' and more 'Which fantasy land am I going to get Harry Dresden to set on fire?'

That sounds like a winner.

But you make me almost want to try and find out 'Which fantasy land could I get Hannibal to eat his way through?'
Not that that would get any votes  ;D

Go for it. I look forward to hearing of his meeting with 'Gandalf the Grilled' and 'Saruman of Many Flavours'.

Only you can come up with that kind of sick jokes!

I thought of have him drop into Little Red Riding Hood (which I've only ever done twice, immaright). The girl would sass Hannibal who would then eat the grandma and eventually eat little red after feeding her some grandma too. Upon being disturbed by the hunter, he'd invite him for a BBQ. Ending on sun setting with hunter and Hannibal enjoying grilled sausages.

Fanfic.. Not really up my street as I usually don't like to think of other peoples characters.
I have some issues finding the boundaries here.

Let's say I wanna write a LOTR / TWOT crossover, can I write a story where Frodo is just setting out and Rand Al'Thor comes walking from a Tel'aran'rhiod dream and decides to help Frodo? He makes a gateway into the pit, frodo drops the ring, end. Theoretically speaking that would be allowed?

Is it allowed to use characters from fantasy games? Let's say the Warcraft characters?
Title: Re: [Feb 2017] - Fanfic - Discussion Thread
Post by: Nora on February 01, 2017, 12:54:12 PM
@Roelor, given that I already don't follow or know the stories of 90% of what is discussed above, I think Warcraft is risky, since it's even more niche. But using the same reason as above, why not, since it'll make no difference between not recognizing a character from a game or from a book? *shrugs*

Ha, I like it, but I actually have a better idea that is closer to the rules. We'll see if it works or not. :)

I did it last year (game characters) and there are plenty of Warcraft novels out there, so it certainly counts (as far as I know). I think the only downside is many people who don't play WoW may not know the character, so won't be able to tell if you've captured them well or not.

But since it also applies to most of the books people are talking about using... Why not? I played a some mass effect (3, I think) and had to sell my ps3 when I was maybe 4h into the game, so your story wouldn't get any more bonus points  :D

True! But once I came up with my alternate book idea, I liked it so much I decided it was the one I want to go with. It seems hilarious in concept, but we'll see if I can actually pull it off.

Which surprises me, since FanFic is my least favorite month and I almost bought I'd skip a month for the first time in, oh, forever-ish.

Just a question now whether X drops into Y's world, or Y drops into X's.
Hmmmmm.

But to be fair, this month was quite a rush with our boss being really busy and just remembering the new month on the last day, so we had to go the easy and quick way: tradition.

I don't mind fanfic but crossover isn't really my favorite kind.

That being said I have a great idea and it's been almost a year since I wrote for the contest.  Hopefully I can manage to set aside some time to write a story this month.
Title: Re: [Feb 2017] - Fanfic - Discussion Thread
Post by: LightRunner on February 09, 2017, 02:42:29 AM
That was a lot harder than I thought it would be. It's been fun to dive back into some of my favorite books and re-visit the characters, but it seems very difficult to do cross-over fantasy fanfic without breaking some of the rules of one world or the other. (And remembering all the rules well enough to write within them and come up with plausible conflicts...oy.)

Regardless, I pushed my way through and have a first draft now.

Does Resident Evil novels count for this contest? Alice and Umberella Corporation are heading into the murky Malazan world at Morn!

I have a plot theme, where Umbrella Corporation unearthed some ancient historical texts and performed a ritual which opened up a link (Warren)  to Morn where the K'Chain Che'Malle matron resides. Her influence is what leads Umbrella to wreck havoc in Earth and give the bad men powers, like when she helped the Pannion Seer before.

Now Alice discovers this, invades the Warren, travels to Morn   and closes the link..... With lot if hack and slash.... Plus maybe with help of some characters from Malazan world.

Sounds within rules? I'm gonna call this Resident Evil : Fallen!

I emerge from my hole into the light once more, only to realize it's fanfic February, the month is half gone, and I suck at fanfic ;).

I at least have one side figured out if we are allowed to use the classics. The other day I found my old CD copy of Return to the Center of the Earth. A gift from my parents over a decade old and I thought "why not, to the center of the earth we'll go" after listening to it again.

Dude, I say go for it! Fanfic month is for fun, IMO. Last year, I wrote a Nathan Drake vs Lara Croft fanfic (both have books, after all!) and it doesn't get more videogame than that. :)

I'm hoping a bunch of entries are going to appear in the last few days, per normal. Only four days left, folks! So many good crossovers to be done!

i've got a rough idea for mine.  i am planning on working on it this weekend.  because, after 20 in a row, i'm not going to break the cycle yet.

i can't promise it'll be of any quality, tho.  heh.

haha, I'm gonna nope outta this month.  You guys have been waaaaaaaaay outta my wheelhouse the last few months.

Consequently, I have kindly offered to provide prompts for the rest of the year.  My descriptions are a lot shorter than yours.

March: Paranormal Romance.  Because I just really want to read porn.
June: Fantasy, IN SPACE
July: Rogues.  Give me a heist story.
August: Epic Fantasy.  Instead of 1,500, the word limit will be 150,000
Sept:  Rogues again. Because I like rogues.
October: Horror.  Gore! Blood! Guts! Splattered everywhere!!!!!
November: Write a play-by-play of your best ever D&D/RPG campaign
December: Monkeys.  Write a story with monkeys.  Don't ask why, I just love monkeys.

Come on, who likes monkeys? Who wants to review 150,000 words? And we already did rogues.
But fantasy in space instead of sci Fi sounds like a downright good challenge.

@Nora

HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE MONKEYS
and if it were up to me we'd do Rogues EVERY month

(Also, in retrospect I shoulda put the 150k word one in Nov for NanNoWriMo  :) )

Jan can be twitter month where you have to write a story in 140 characters or less.
(actually that could be fun if you had to follow the submission before you....)

While I'm not serious, I would (and probably have previously) *totally* write the hell out of all of those prompts (save paranormal romance)

Unrelated, and in spoilers b/c... I have no idea...   but while I suck at writing crossover stuff, I do enjoy reading it. My fav crossover Fanfic of all time has to be this one:
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5256888/1/Courage-VS-The-Golden-Girls-VS-The-Lion-King
maybe that will get someone's creative juices flowing

I was joking as well Bea.

Though, WHO LIKES MONKEYS, I'm not joking. Have you been near monkeys? They're little shits.
@Bradley Darewood wanna play a game? I challenge to write about rogue characters every month for the next 4 months. *diabolic laughter*

Mine is probably going to be a last-minute entry. I'm about 300 words in, and I've had to do a lot of research on books I haven't read in a while. February is hard.

Hmmmmmm I've been struggling with my MC in revisions of my WIP, who is a rogue.  I wonder if I could just write that same character into every prompt until I get him figured out :)  Might be a good exercise!

There is this guy who's not bad at drawing and has routinely crazy and cool ideas. I bet he could draw something fitting in the time I need to find a CC licensed picture. ;)

I think you should have shortened his hair just a little.  That way you could have made the scar stand out a little more.  But other than that, you nailed it.  I'm very impressed.

i'm trying to coax this kind of graph (http://www.dataschool.io/roc-curves-and-auc-explained/) from this latest batch of ml-modeled ai data.  eep!  my brain is currently working at all kinds of right angles, so i can't draw anything that'd look any better than bradley's stuff right now.

but, yeah, a lightning bolt and i think we've got ourselves a cover!

okey dokey.  i'm in!

i don't completely hate the story, but it's certainly not my favorite.  not by any means.  and it's missing the patented "m3mnoch twist" at the end.  but, i got a story in this month!  even with all this noise in the world struggling to distract me.  and that's what counts!

heh.  tho, i only read through it once.  maybe i'll just never read it again and pretend it's good.

Well done!
With only 8 entries and 2 votes, the odds of winning are better (and you made readers' jobs easier for one month, after the monster with 18 hehe) ;)

I'll do the voting thread tomorrow morning, that's the best 'end time' for all time zones.
