Mat Cauthon (Wheel of Time) by endave (http://endave.deviantart.com/) vs Kaladin Stormblessed (Stormlight Archive) by zusacre (http://zusacre.deviantart.com/)

This is the third year we do Fanfic February (wow, time is fleeting...). The first year (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/%28feb-2014%29-fanfic/) you could write whatever you wanted, last year (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/%28feb-2015%29/) I limited the books you could choose from. And this year...

...I want you to write a fight scene between two characters (or groups of main characters) from different authors. FitzChivalry against Jorg Ancrath, Locke Lamora vs Jimmy the Hand, Kelsier's crew against the Ketty Jay's crew... You get the idea.
Be creative, there can be battles with magic, swords, minds, words, ... :)

I'm not limiting you to special books but remember that it's more fun for your readers if they know the characters. So if you choose something obscure, not everbody will get the jokes in or the awesomeness of your story. ;)

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. Has to be fan fiction and has to contain characters from two different worlds/books/authors engaged in some kind of fight.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-500 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys next to the 'youtube' symbol.

Entry will close February 29th/March 1st, 2016 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months. If you don't want this, please say so while submitting.

Submitting a story counts as published, so if some submission guidelines (publishers, magazines, agents, ...) state that the story has to be unpublished, this story is out. You are still in possession of all the rights for your story.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/%28feb-2016%29-fanfic/%28feb-2016%29-fanfic-submission-thread).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

Great idea! But my lack of reading the popular fantasy series might knock me down here...might have to be Locke Lamora versus one of Abercrombie's grumbling witty murderers. :D

I just feel like writing something silly.

Oof, I think I'll stand myself out of this one. Normally I wouldn't because I can't publish the fanfic story underneath my fanfic handle (as I'm trying to keep things at least plausibly deniable separate), but I don't read nearly enough of what is popular in fantasy currently. Unless I did things with, say, Arthuriana vs Some Other Folkloric Tradition.

But crossovers are fun! So, everyone taking back, have fun :D

Nope. I started in March. Which is fortunate because I would not have participated in last Feb's contest. Ah, it's a shame I wanted to make a perfect participation year, but I really dislike the idea of writing about iconic characters. My voice just won't fit other people's creation. Just dreaming up situations feels wrong and out of context...  :-[

Fight scene, huh?  Is this a verbal fight scene or a physical fight scene?

This is a tough one.  It's hard to get into the minds of other authors' characters.  And since I'm not as 'seasoned' of a fantasy reader as some (or a reader period), I probably won't recognize a lot of characters.

However, I would like to see a standoff between Aragorn and Hadrian Blackwater.  Or maybe that wily dwarf from the Sword of Shannara against Royce.  (Can you tell I'm reading Riyria books right now? hehe).

Oh!  I know, guys!  Dumbledore vs. Gandalf!  I feel like someone might have thought of/tried that before.

Yeah, that's going to be a bit of a problem for readers as well... Even though I read a lot of sff, I still don't recognize any of the names in Xiagan's examples besides Kelsier, or I know of the name but it's from series I have not read... Might not be able to be a fair judge this month either.

@SugoiMe (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40371) if you read Xiagan's post carefully he says it can be a battle with swords, magic, or words. So verbal battles are fine too.

So just to clarify some things, as I started writing my idea but skidded to a halt pretty quickly.

If I'm doing Locke Lamora vs Jorg for example, am I supposed to be writing fan-fic mimicking the style of one of the characters from the author they are written by? As Locke is written in third person while Jorg speaks to us directly, so it was weird writing Jorg in the third person when that just doesn't happen in the writing.

Or am I being dumb here (if I am it's due to tiredness :D)
Title: Re: [Feb 2016] - Fanfic - Discussion Thread

I think it's more related to the personalities of the characters, rather than the writers' specific styles.

So for example in your case, I doubt we'd see Jorg having a funny chat and pint with Locke, hehe

Fair enough! Think I'll do it from Locke's POV anyway, think I can actually write that than mimic Jorg's mind...

i'm hoping to make this month, but i may not.

for one, i'm crushing on a couple short stories to submit as part of my application to clarion.  (one of them happens to be a story with guns.  and dragons.  double-duty!)

the other reason is my general malaise about fan-fic.  never really been my thing.  besides, even tho i love the fight scene part of it, i'm suffering some pretty deep cognitive dissonance when it comes to mixing the narrative voice of some of my favorite characters into one scene - and still keep it feeling authentic.

Fair enough! Think I'll do it from Locke's POV anyway, think I can actually write that than mimic Jorg's mind...

For mine, I actually went and read the first chapters of the Uncharted and Tomb Raider novel tie-ins to see how each author had written the characters (thanks, Look Inside!) and used that to inform how I wrote the crossover. I tried to mimic Christopher Golden's writing style, to an extent (even though I'd never read any of his other work) while also drawing on my experiences in both games.

What was the most fun when thinking through how a fight would go between Drake and Lara was comparing how powerful each character was, just considering what you do in each game. If you consider only the mechanics in each game, Lara wins in most encounters. If she has any sort of sightline on Nathan Drake, he's pretty much dead with an arrow between the eyes.

Drake's combat in Uncharted is mostly gunfights at close to medium range, with some fistfights in melee. Lara spends the vast majority of her time creeping through woods, silently headshoting enemies with bows from long range, without ever being spotted. Plus, she gets perks later in the game that allow her to headshot people automatically, which make her absolutely lethal.

Technically, if Drake had a sniper rifle and sightline on an unaware Lara, he could probably take her out, and he also might have a chance if the got in a straight up gunfight, but if she got to choose where the encounter took place, I think Drake's pretty much dead. Fortunately for Drake, because Lara's a decent person and actually didn't WANT to kill him (I figured Drake would just take a contract for Trinity, without knowing about their darker deeds) I decided she'd fire some warning shots to cover her advance, instead.

Can't wait to see what other people come up with, I *love* this writing prompt.

I'm going to give this a shot just because it will be my second time participating, but I don't expect I can do this well. Also, whatever characters I decide on will most likely be from books written a decade or more ago.

Please don't. It's not a rule to use characters from bestsellers and using somebody cool from a lesser known book/series may even get some people to read that book. :)

Bouuuuh I don't want to not participate but I hate fan fiction...  :'(
I'm not a fan either - at least that's what I thought until I read some entries of the last fanfic contests. Fanfic can be cool. :)

My voice just won't fit other people's creation. Just dreaming up situations feels wrong and out of context...  :-[
See it as a challenge to your writing abilities. ;) I know that writing fanfic is hard - especially if you try to emulate someone else's voice. Having a crossover theme this time makes it easier I think, because it doesn't have to take place in another author's world.

Comic books do it constantly (Marvel vs DC; Mickey Mouse vs some real historical persons, ...) and it works great there.

Shout-out for @ScarletBea (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=32020) who is an incredible help with the contests and helps me immensely with staying on schedule (except with the publication of the winners on the main site - we're working on that)!

If you choose characters that are not generally well known, some of the impact and appreciation of your action/ dialogue/comments will be lost. They will rely on the knowledge of the book situations and the particular little quirks/strengths/weaknesses of those characters.

It is a risk you run. For example, if I said I would match Mouse and Oberon, I wonder how many here would know who I meant straight away?
Title: Re: [Feb 2016] - Fanfic - Discussion Thread
Post by: Nora on February 02, 2016, 03:12:36 AM
Mmmh. I have an idea for a setting that would make things bearable, but no clue as to which character would be interesting or that I would at all be able to write. I don't like other people's character's forced on me :(
I can see why people like fanfic to read, but I really struggle getting my excitement up.

Edit - it's decided actually, I'm going to write something monstrous and ridiculous with dozens of opponents with characters including my own in a way that will make all your eyes bleed. I actually have a ton of re-reading to do and plans an mapping for each battle it's stupid.

Alright, but still? Does it not qualify? After all graphic novels are novels, and comic books and famous mangas are books recorded on GoodReads...
Not that I'm looking at doing it mind you, but the clarification would be good

I think that opens the field too much. There are thousands of mangas, comics would contain Donald Duck, Asterix and Homer Simpson and again thousands of other comics.
We have so many fantasy (and SF) books, do we really need to open this up in the comic direction? What for?

See! My point!  ;D

No it's just that if goodreads considers V for Vendetta or Watchmen books, I figured their characters would be both well known enough and pretty awesome to describe in fights.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm taking my angry writing seriously. I'm 8 pages deep only in notes and plotting, and the battle will include 9 characters from 9 different authors.
Even drew the MC in late night doodles. If anyone is keen to have a look and try to guess who it'll be, here he goes : http://i.imgur.com/drBO8G3.jpg

Even drew the MC in late night doodles. If anyone is keen to have a look and try to guess who it'll be, here he goes : http://i.imgur.com/drBO8G3.jpg

Xia, do you mean that comic characters are included in the "book character" spectrum?
No, that was just an example.

Alright, but still? Does it not qualify? After all graphic novels are novels, and comic books and famous mangas are books recorded on GoodReads...
Not that I'm looking at doing it mind you, but the clarification would be good

Same thing here. I want to use a character mostly famous because of his appearance in comics/movies, but there works of him (and his universe) as graphic novels and even a book in paperback.

Edit - it's decided actually, I'm going to write something monstrous and ridiculous with dozens of opponents with characters including my own in a way that will make all your eyes bleed. I actually have a ton of re-reading to do and plans an mapping for each battle it's stupid.

Okay, now I'm imagining something as ridiculous as Project X Zone, but with novel characters instead of game characters. I want to read that!

Oof, I think I'll stand myself out of this one. [...]  but I don't read nearly enough of what is popular in fantasy currently.
Please don't. It's not a rule to use characters from bestsellers and using somebody cool from a lesser known book/series may even get some people to read that book. :)

Eh, I have a lot on this month (including starting a new medication), so there are other reasons to sit this one out. Fanfic DOES involve a lot of 'needing to know the canon', which makes this kind of thing hard. While there are works which can work as separate to the source, they are much harder to pull off, and certainly with the word-limit. But mostly, from a fanfic writer's POV, if I can think of a pair of canons to crossover that have enough name-cred to work within this short word-limit, AND a pair of characters I can actually write (not all fanfic writers can write all characters, and my headspace for this area is very firmly in a fandom already), I can put it on AO3 and have far more people come over and read it. And if I'm going to finish a fanfic this month, it's going to be one of the ones already on my computer, because oh gosh, do I need to clear out the backlog there.

So, yes. Sitting this one out. Hopefully March, though!

Write what you feel is best. A long dialogue between two characters over beer could be better than a 10 character brawl.

I have recently read and enjoyed work by Jen Williams and look back fondly on work by Patrick Rothfuss. I think the no nonsense character of Wydrin would be a complete contrast for that of Kvothe's need to always be right, so I've submitted a story that puts them together. I've no expectations, I just hope you all enjoy it. Thanks for the opportunity.

This is going to be a really hard month to vote on, seriously...  :-[  I know none of the characters of anyone's stories. Jokes and references will be lost on me. And there is hardly any room to develop character, or their specifics, and build the story at the same time.

Even as I work on mine I realise it's going to be extremely hard to enjoy and grasp for anyone who hasn't read the book of my MC, because of the somewhat complex magic he uses. I've had to cut down references because they'd be opaque.

Title: Re: [Feb 2016] - Fanfic - Discussion Thread

Considering what others have said, esp Nora's comments above about not understanding characters etc, I couldn't decide what to do and just went for a random out there idea.

Not entirely sure it's within the rules of the contest but it is a fight between two character's from fantasy books. Just happens to be one with words instead...kind of.

Frankly who cares! :)

Usually the characters are already developed and established, which should make it easy to write.
If you want people who haven't read the books it's based on to understand everything it's a lot harder of course...

Of course but then how am I to appreciate everyone's work? I have no background on any of the characters used in the posted stories so far... Besides tomb raider which gives me vague ideas - if it's based on the video game, which I played back when I was 12 an it was a lump of pixels.
I tried to make my story accessible but the MC uses complex magic, if people haven't read the work it might be confusing.
Sorry I'm only being grumpy with the theme.

Yeah, the Tomb Raider franchise has come a long way since the first game on PC, back in the day. After the franchise published a couple of poor quality games and dried up, Square Enix got the license and rebooted it in a totally awesome way, by showing us Lara's first real adventure and then building her up into a more experienced adventurer from there. Kind of like a Young Indiana Jones thing, but with an early 20s Lara at the start of her character arc.

I'm a huge fan of the rebooted games, both the first one (simply titled Tomb Raider) and the more recent sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider. Squeenix simultaneously did a good job of making the character fresh and interesting, as well as more "human" than the prior, established version. Much of this is due to the excellent writing team led by Rhianna Pratchet ... I was just reading an article about her here, as well as the increasingly common integration of professional writers in game development.

Also, for those who don't have any background on my characters, specifically, here's some videos that also, coincidentally, showcase how far games have come since the pixelated days. :)

(psssst: any subject you'd like to see in march? ;) )
Mmmm rainbows and butterflies?  ;D

I dunno really. On reflection I don't think we're particularly good at writing to prompts. And we've not done a good job at fitting an entire story into the word limit either...  :-\ Maybe the "beginnings" suggestion I posted a while back would be a good one for us?

We're just one writer though, and it seems like everyone else is having a lot of fun with the themes recently, so it's probably best to come up with something that would appeal to more participants. ;)

A random picture with landscape/cityscape  and masses of small detail including people or animals, like those old Breugels, but xiagan  and ScarletBea's choice.

Then we have to make of it what we can, the whole, a tiny part or whatever.

I think something that goes classic fantasy:

> enchanted weapon
> enchanted person
> magical animal

Or, I thought the "abandoned places" art from last year were really cool. Something like that.

Since you claimed the second  ;) and the third doesn't show up on my iPhone, I'll take the first. A strange alien has crash landed on a snow bound Viking planet and is hiding on the rooftops from the terrifying humanoids.

Well in that case, let it be said that my cyborg would be a shrine attendant, working for the living god residing there, and his main job would be to go around on his shitty flying scooter to deliver or placate wards written by the god on pieces of paper or wood.  :P

that's a sweet series of photos, @Nora (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40237) -- nice work.

i'd take the last one.  it's calling to me, asking for a blade runner / ghost in the shell mashup.

Though I am afraid Deckard would be a bit outmatched by Major Kusanagi. It wouldn't really be a fair fight...

Love all the pictures Nora and Henry, they have so much possibility. Nora your second one made me think of this in nowadays Hong Kong. Then I realised it was all so way off subject have put in spoiler so not to fill up page with irrelevant pics.

Then I remembered flying into Hong Kong before they built new runway and airport and the plane was so close to the old high rises that just before you landed you could actually see the washing and people on the balconies from the plane window very near.   :o At the time it didn't seem at all worrying and some of the actual streets then were often like your last picture.

Huh... This looks just like Paris.. But is there someone with a dragon's tail in the middle there? I'd go back to Paris if it were like this IRL!

Rue des Tuileries

Or rue de Rivoli

And you're right Lady Ty, it does. A lot of streets in Japan as well, especially in Tokyo, seem to be so crowded with signs and cables that the illustrations can look tame!

I truly knocked myself out trying this month, chef contests, circus acts, gladiators, who knows what, just didn't work for me. I even went back to try Mouse v Oberon and can't get past this doggerel

I belong to the Druid, Atticus my master
I'm Oberon the Wolfhound, nobody faster
Threatened by Angus Og and his Fianna
Then chased by Loki and Goddess Diana
Done defeated Thor an' ser'sly bad witches
But happiest with bacon and French poodle bitches

ABSOLUTELY TIME TO GIVE UP   ::) ::)
Good luck everyone who enters it is a good subject and will make great reading.

EDIT 2:

Done and posted! 1 ,497 words. And while it ain't perfect, it's not awful.

Well, I had to throw my hands up in the face of quantitative dactylic hexametre. It's really hard to pull off in English (at least for a non-native).
I spent a few hours trying to decipher it. Managed to only write two and a half lines and even they weren't correct.  ;D

So, I'm sitting this one out. But if I ever have the time, I think I'll try to write the poem just for fun (and to show that I'm not poetically challenged).  ;)
