Thor's Fight with the Giants by Mårten Eskil Winge

December. The darkest month with the longest night of the year. Harsh and cold days and mankind struggling in winter's iron grip.
Separated through walls of snow from others, one feels tiny and alone.
What better time to remember that there are Gods looking out for you? Gods, who may help you through these hard times for a little prayer or one or two blood sacrifices? Gods, created in your image - or the other way around?

This month you're going to write a story seeped through with a religion, cult, sect or other belief system. Or more than one. Malevolent, Benevolent, even consistent. I don't care what kind of religion, as long as it's a big part of the story. Or somebody living one, suffering through one or (why not?) creating one.

Have fun writing and remember: Everything is believable with the right amount of faith, delusion or denial. ;)

Rules:

1. This can be prose or a poem.
2. The story must contain a religion (or more, or... see above).
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-500 words long.
5. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
6. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
7. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
8. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
9. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys next to the 'youtube' symbol:

Entry will close January 1st 2015 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.*

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here. Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website in early 2015.

Please post your entry here.

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

*I seem to never be home around the end of month, so please excuse me if I'm not always on time (which is hard in an international contest with all the time zones anyways. ;))

Hm, that's a very broad theme as a challenge. Almost too many possibilities of what can be done with that.
The results should get quite interesting, though.
We are not standing on the shoulders of giants, but on a big tower of other dwarves.

I'm remembering the old story by Harlan Ellison in which man finally tracks down God on an alien planet after he has been running from us for a very long time.

And so many great fantasy novels recently with strong religion elements: Gentlemen Bastards, Spirit War, Chalion (Bujold)...

This should be fun.

I have an idea that I got from a painting in the Louvre, just not sure if I can get an entire story out of it.
I will expand your TBR pile.

As I missed November's contest I'll attempt another go for December - interesting topic and perhaps take a cue from Elfy and look up some religious art from various beliefs for some inspiration

Really like this theme; now, if only I can come up with something...  :)

When I moved to Alabama for work some years ago (famous in the U.S. as part of the "Bible belt") we had a friendly reception all around.  Everyone you met asked two questions:

> Which (American) football team do you root for: University of Alabama or University of Auburn?
> Have you found a church yet?

Both qualify as religious questions in Alabama.

Finished draft 1 of my story for the December contest last night.  "Have you found a church yet?" takes a starring role.  ;D

Damn it Xi. Why you gotta give us such good topics? Makes the competition that much harder to beat.

Yes, but then you go and post a dynamic, nasty little piece under a 1,000 words and make the rest of us (or at least, me) feel inadequate.  Thanks a lot C.Hill.    :-\

Dynamic? Wow. I wouldn't call it that, but thanks. And frankly, you give me a limit of over 1K, and I'm struggling. However, I will say I liked your's the best. (Am I allowed to be biased this early on? :P) Has a nice, fluid flow and one helluva ending. Plus, actual characterization in so few words. What is this? How?

Hey Danno! Nice submission, but this isn't the place to post it; this is for discussion on the topic.

Here's the place for submission. You also need a word count, too, but no worries!

There's some very stiff competition this month!  :o  ;D
