I think it's about this point the book begins to pick 'really' pick up. You'll now get a good feeling for who is who and I think you would have decided either 'I love it' or 'I hate it' by now. The perspective shifts have kind of become identifiable and it's time to hold and get ready to move forward!

Just finished chapter 14 and I am liking it so far.  Not the absolute best writing I've read, but the characters are engaging/interesting.  It will be interesting to see which direction the author takes in Black Halo.

Just read the torture scene. Wow. Disturbing and superb writing. Unlike other fantasy writers *ahem* *Brett* *ahem* Sykes knows he is writing something deeply disturbing, and fades out to avoid graphic descriptions but still leaves a foul taste in the readers mouth.

I haven't quite made it to 14, probably tonight. . . but yeah.  I really enjoyed the thief/rogue's reaction to finding out how the others perceive him and his kinda forced cold detachment assumably because of this during the torture.

Yeah - I think at this point I was thinking I knew Sykes strengths and limitations... but later on he made me cry... can't say more than that without a very minor spoiler... :)

Table top role playing game. Lets fly out to Thailand to play it. Magic mushrooms and lagers aplenty.

Gonna be critical now. Way too much soul searching discussions between the characters, beginning to read like an episode of Dawson's Creek

Not sure where you are up to, but there was a point (I mentioned it in my review) that for about 100 pages it seemed to get almost too character based and I wondered where the story had gone. Perhaps that is the bit you've got too... It does pick up again though, so stick with it :)

I like this book so far, however chapters 7 to 10(?) were really slow going. I think we had an entire chapter about Katriana staring at Lent and vice-versa. After all the action in the first 25% that was a bit of a shock to me and I didn't enjoy it. There were other similar soul searching moments as well, which may be necessary, but would have been better interspersed with the story more. Instead we got separate chapters dedicated to the characters thoughts.

I really enjoyed the torture scene though - that was brilliantly done. The book has started to pick up the pace again now, so I'm glad I stuck with it.

I think I have the exact same sentiments as you Doctor! Shall I put up the next thread now, since a lot of us now seem to be past the half way point?

There's an awful lot of talk about how adventurers are the dregs of society, yet they all seem to 'read' fairly attractive, intelligent and amazingly well-spoken.  Their vocabularies are astonishing for someone who may or may not have had any sort of education.  I just find the characters completely unbelievable.  Like maybe there should be more grit there.  The rogue is portrayed as a coward and a backstabber. . . someone who would kill for no reason at all. . . yet somehow I feel he's still almost too likeable.  I said before that this reminded me of anime, and I'll stick to that.  I keep wondering what these kids are doing on this island fighting demons.  Who would hire a band of teenagers (not that Sykes has said they're teenagers, I just get that vibe) to do any of that?

I think Sykes is going to make a good author someday. Most of the things the characters do and some of the interactions between them are good. The story is relatively decent.  I think the characters motivations are spot on. Maybe his pacing is what really bugs me.

I'm getting awfully sick of the rehashing though.  It feels like there's some 'Twilight' action going on between Lenk and Kat.  It just goes on FOREVER AND EVER and over and over again. . .

I guess I would ask Sam Sykes who his intended audience is.  I think, being 37, some of the angst is lost on me.

I would guess men in their teens to early 20's would be his 'target' audience (seeing as that was his age when writing it).
