Just now getting started!  Found this book club after reading had already begun for the month and then this book took way longer than expected to get delivered.

Anyway, similar to what a few others have said, I'm having a little bit of trouble with his style even after the first six chapters. The constant bickering between the characters isn't part of it though.  I actually find that part pretty realistic - it matches up pretty well with conversations I've had myself while in the military. I think my main criticism is with the pace. Now more than 100 pages in, I would expect to know more about the overall plot. The characters have been introduced well but I still don't know why they were on this ship, where they were going, or what they were doing other than accompanying Evenhands. Perhaps Lenk doesn't know anything more himself, but I would have expected some complaining on that topic if that were the case. I hope that more substantive events occur soon or I fear that not much story will have been told over the course of this first book.

I think that part of what you buy into when you read within the fantasy genre is a willingness to give the author quite a bit of leeway and time to begin their story. I'm certainly willing to give Sykes some more time but I think he may be pushing it.

Back to reading now. I need to catch up.

I think you are right that you are willing to give a new author a little bit more time... I mean, I always give a first book more time than a book by an already established author. For example Brent Week's 'Black Prism' novel I wrote off as 'not as good' fairly soon after starting it... because I'd read such good work by him and enjoyed it immensely, I knew straight away this wasn't going to live up to Night Angel.

Finally started!  Read up to chapter 7 during the black out that accompanied the hurricane. :)  (It's really hard to read by candlelight by the way.  I can see why people in olden times went to bed earlier!)

Anyway, I LOVE this so far!  It reminds me of my D&D group.  The only real difference between the characters in the book and our gaming group is none of the characters have killed each other yet.
Spoiler for Hiden:
My friends would have totally jumped ship and left Lenk to fight the pirates himself. XD

I think the first fight has been a little long in resolving, but with so many characters to introduce I'm not really surprised by that.  I was actually more surprised that the whole party was already together at the very beginning of the story.  (At least I assume it's the whole party.)  Most stories start off with a couple of members and then pick up people along the way.  Having everyone start together in chapter one gives it even more of a D&D vibe.

My favorite part about it so far though, is the fact that after talking and following him on Twitter and reading his blog for a while now, I could have picked this book to have been written by him even if his name wasn't on it.  His voice is very unique and I love his sense of humor.  I can already tell that's it's not a book that everyone would like, but I think if you were ever a gamer then this book is a good match. :)

Maybe that's my problem - I've not played any RPGs for over 20 years!

First question: is Denaos actually a giant cockroach or just a human who resembles one?
Other thoughts: 25% of the book read and just a couple of hours have passed in terms of action, and still on the same battle! Yet the characters have been introduced superbly, the mystery set up, and I am hooked! Great dialogue, and expecting a very dirty human/ shict sex scene before the end!

This confused me at first it sounded like Denaos was a giant cockroach and not human

Good to see a young a wizard instead of an old wise wizard, it's funny when he sets fire on the Innocent sailor again and his speaking out aloud inappropriate thoughts about gods in front of the cleric

The Dragonman reminds me of  the Dragonlance creatures Draconians and Dragon Spawn

The battle with the pirates went on a bit too long for me

I'm liking the hostility between Kataria and Quillian

Lenk's inner voice is he going mad or does he share his mind space with someone/something?

Only character not keen on so far is Asper

Had a bit of trouble getting into story at first but now I'm getting into it

According to some,* heroic deaths are admirable things
