Potions and Elixirs

(http://pre09.deviantart.net/c90e/th/pre/f/2015/043/0/8/skyrim_potions_by_etrelley-d8hostc.png) by etrelley (http://etrelley.deviantart.com/art/Skyrim-potions-513439968)

Bea rightly pointed out that there haven't been many "traditional" story prompts this year. We did a lot of extravagant stuff like Breaking the Fourth Wall, Random Wikipedia Article or last month's Story Generator and it was great fun but for August we decided to go with something more "normal". ;)
Outside of RPGs and adventure games, potions haven't been very popular until a certain Professor humiliated a little wizard student lesson after lesson in his potion class.
This month I want you to show me that there is more about potions than Severus Snape, Felix Felices and Polyjuice Potion.

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. A potion or elixir has to be relevant to the story.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-500 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys next to the 'youtube' symbol.

Entry will close August 31st/September 1st, 2016 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/(aug-2016)-potions-and-elixirs/(aug-2016)-potions-and-elixirs-submission-thread/new/#new).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

No likes in this forum? There's some pretty awesome pictures floating around.

Also, I pretty much have my idea already, what with my last entry here including a potion...

Aye! What a great topic! Very cool and broad, less restraining than the last two topics. I don't have any ideas yet but I'm happy with this! Will start mulling it over.

...tentatively they drank the bubbling ichor, one by one. For a moment nothing happened but then there was a crash of thunder and from a cloud of smoke Wakarimasen appeared.

"Hey kids. I'm back. Miss me?"

Lot's changed this year... I'm now a full time dad having done a role swap with the missus. This sounds like a great topic to brush off the ink and quill for and try and get back into some writing...

Maybe there should do a joint story and see what happens.

Hmmm. Can't do dark. Let me refresh your memory:

Nov 14: The Beach House: Old man's dying wish is to return to the portal world he left as a child. Another child takes his place. He weeps as the credits roll.
Dec 14: Fair Trade: Medieval humanoids resist the encroachment of alien weapons dealers, but pretty clear they won't survive in the long run. Somber music as the credits roll.
Mar 15: Good Dog: Mother tries to save son form evil enchanter, but she dies in the attempt. Son is lost in enchanted state as credits roll.
May ? 15: Parting Friends: Gandlaf-like wizard watches his faithful hobbit-like friend die, then plans to give the great magic gem that could save the world to his evil dark lord master, who is laughing (probably) as the credits roll.
? 15: Three Times Seals the Spell: Bride who is a witch plans the magical demise of her maid-of-honor when she suspects maid and groom to be doing the nasty. Sounds of carrots being chopped as credits roll.
? 15: The High King: Little boy blows up a boathouse after seeing his father killed before his eyes, then sails the boat off into the sky. Sounds of "are we there yet"? As the credits roll.

Not so sure about 2016. The year is sort of a blur.

But hey! JMack does DARK! Just saying.  8)

You know, speaking about always doing the same thing, it occurred to me recently that all of the protagonists in my recent short story contest entries have been dying, which wasn't the case in earlier months. Makes me wonder what will happen this month.

April - Post-Apocalypse (Died)
May - Well-known Fairytales (Died)
June - Random Wikipedia Article (Died)
July - Story Generator (might as well be dead)

It could be I'm more likely to kill a protagonist when they'll only be around for 1,500 words. :)

Interesting survey... I don't write too dark all the time but even if my characters don't often die, mostly they're assholes.

May : Kills, eats a grandma and feeds her flesh and blood to her grandchild to teach the kid a lesson.
April : Hunts and kills a woman without ever stopping to wonder why.
March : Tests a terrifying and totally illegal drug for his twin brother.
December : Interspecies lovers hunted down in an anti-alien revolt.
October : Demon reports an anomaly to his boss and witnesses the vile cursing of a priest, congratulates himself on doing a good job.
September : Murders a bunch of people, gets shot by the rescued ones because of a bounty on his head, prolly will kill all of them too.
July : Murders herself to gain longevity.
June : Plans another escape from an institution, plotting with her other personality without knowing it's not a separate person. Gets caught again.
May : Beats and kidnaps a fairy to find out what happened to her dog. Turns out fairies ate him.
April : Viciously mauled by a monstrous wolf who turns out to be her dad.

Actually the nicest of all my stories was probably my first, in March last year, since my contract killer MC warmed up to a young kid and refused to follow his orders to kill.

As far as I'm concerned, Scarlet isn't straying far from the truth...

Came up with two poison ideas. One i think will probably be my story for this, the other though has morphed into something a bit too long for this contest, but is probably the better of the two and I want to write anyway.  :-\

What? What's dark? I mean, no one is eating anyone else raw there, I don't get it....

I had an initial idea I liked a lot, but had a poor plot for it. Now got a very different but much better one, which I will try writing first person, present tense, and don't plan on making "this" dark at all!

Usually I like to stay away from things like potions and elixirs for stories since I don't like putting too much magic into my fantasies, but then I remember that 'potions' are what people in the medieval times called medicine. *shrugs* I'm thinking of doing something radical. *rubs hands together* *laughs maniacally*

it's so awesome to see all these contest newbies entering!  i love reading everyone's crazy-different perspectives on the theme.  it's pretty cool to see everyone's different imaginations at work.  poking around in here is easily one of my favorite parts of each day.

my absolute favorite part, tho?  that it feels more like a writing 'club' than a writing 'contest'.

p.s.  to all the first-timers -- i'm obviously the mushy one around here.  it's that guy @Jmack (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=37094) you have to worry about.  *shivers*  especially when he sings...

p.p.s.  is he back from the wilderness of maine yet?  hasn't it already been two weeks?  jeez!  we should make a rule -- no vacations to beautiful places unless you take us all with you.

Hmm I've written one but it's only very loosely tied to potions and elixirs. I imagine it wouldn't get much votes because of that.

But honestly, fuck it :P Not like I'm good enough to actually compete in our little soiree anyway. So I'll check it later tonight and it's going up into the big bad world.  ;D

A review of this book from Amazon. I totally need this book!

Quote
The Black Goat Motorcycle Club is truly an amazing work. It cured all of my Lupus. It has made me rich, popular, and virtually irresistible to women, men, and all of the myriad creatures of the forest. After reading The Black Goat Motorcycle Club I am now able to perform a flawless reverse 360 windmill dunk with my eyes closed regardless of whether there is a basketball or hoop present. I wish that I could say that these were the only benefits that I reaped from my time with the Black Goats but I was also rewarded with hours of thrilling action, horror, and filthy adventure.

In short, you should read this book. If you don't I'm pretty sure that the Black Goat MC will come to your house and eat all of your lunchmeat and make many, many long distance phone calls without even asking you for permission first.

I'd written one for this, it had nothing to do with potions really, and was a bit silly.

Then just as I was about to submit it I had a sudden idea and wrote it out entirely in one go. I just tidied it up a bit and submitted it.

I think its way way better than my original one. If only that could happen more often.  ;D

Well, the first entry was 500 words of poetry by an American hack - I'd say that must have bolstered some confidence. "Well, if that guy can submit that, I could easily edit this list of yogurt ingredients and make the top three..."

If there's one thing I learned from trying to fit a story into a 1500 word cap, it's that the phrase "Kill your darlings" is worded that way for a REASON... Haha

Btw, it's not cheating if I've hyphenated a few words to make them one is it? Because I did that like three times haha. I think they work, "expensive-looking", "plum-sized", and "pitch-black". The last one is funky, isn't it? Pitch black shouldn't be hyphenated...

Pitch black shouldn't be a thing, since they're basically synonymous.  ;) ;D
Sort of like "Sahara desert", which IIRC means "desert desert."

Of course, I actually love the phrase "pitch black", because... well, awesomeness.

My Arabic is shaky these days, but Sahara, pronounced the way we pronounce it "Sa-haa-ra" is the comparative degree (there's little difference between adjectives and nouns) - so it's "The Desert-ier" "(the desertier one or desert)". Sort of like a dude being called "Manlier", the "man" object is implied/reflexive.

Sahara (as in plain old desert) is pronounced sahra b/c only long vowel sounds get their own letter, and the comparative degree gives The Sahara it's third, central vowel sound.

wait, what?  really?

i always thought it was another way of saying "black as pitch", because pitch is, you know, all black.  not to mention sticky and used to waterproof roofs and such.
Title: Re: [Aug 2016] - Potions and Elixirs - Discussion Thread
Post by: The Gem Cutter on August 20, 2016, 11:29:24 PM
Pitch is not always all black. It has many sources and kinds, and though most are black, they are sometimes brown, golden-brown, etc. The terms pitch, tar, resin, and rosin are closely related and often overlap in usage (sometimes incorrectly), so the term pitch-black is not the redundant thing it seems.
Per Wikipedia: "Pitch was traditionally used to help caulk the seams of wooden sailing vessels (see shipbuilding). Pitch was also used to waterproof wooden containers, and in the making of torches. Petroleum-derived pitch is black in colour, hence the adjectival phrase, "pitch-black"."

Finally back into the contest.

Not exactly pleased with my entry, but I've been nitpicking and polishing for days. It's split in the middle, which is extremely odd for character development, but I liked certain elements too much to change it, even though it weakens everything. I also wanted to try a bit of a challenge with first pov and present tense, which ought to guarantee very few voters  ;D
It's good to be back regardless. I'll do better next month. ::)

Don't really have any good ideas for this one.  :(

First I thought about writing a story with my pyramid-scheming, "potion"-peddling duo Kano and Morry (from my TNotSSmbtoaFBbtSiathatdwtB story), but there's not really a story there... just a beginning.

I'm sinking in the quicksand of unimaginativeness.

@ArcaneArtsVelho (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40090):

Help is on its way:

A wizard loses his glasses just as he is finishing a potion of never-ending life for the king. He mistakenly reads the variant for never-ending wife. When this potion leads to undesirable consequences, he tries to make a shrinking potion, but ends up with a sinking potion that swallows the king, the queen, the castle, and the farmer's cat before he realizes if he looks through a bottle he can actually see his recipes clearly and reverses the potion in time to save the cat.

Ta da! No royalties expected. It's all yours

Exact same feeling here. Stopping only 2 months was a bigger mistake than I thought, and not too happy with my production, but very glad I went and wrote it anyway.
I also feel I have not been exercising my writing muscle enough. It's hard to do so when you feel like you're only spewing mediocre lines.

I'm happy with the contest finishing late, so long as we get the new one in due time! :P

Put random linebreaks into the prose so that it no longer has paragraphs and drifts down the page with a ragged right edge.

It's now a poem.  ;D

Holy crap that's a lot of submissions this month!

I'm totally taking the credit thanks to my rare moments of mad tweeting for spurring this.  ;D 8) ;D

Also just editing my story I realised its more of a 'poison' story than a potion. But poison is a potion right? Technically. :(

Oh well, couldn't come up with anything in the end. No last second miracle this time. No hunger to write during August. Forward we move, but my presence will be known in the voting  8)

As a new addition to the wonderful world of writing competitions, I would be interested to know when judging usually commences? Please excuse my ignorance.

It's usually when the next month's contest is uploaded. It probably won't take long - I guess @ScarletBea (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=32020) has been busy or something!  :P

Oh dear I forgot about the voting thread :-[

Considering that if I do it now, we'll have to wait until this time on the 1st of October to find out the result, I'll do it tomorrow morning :)

(oops again!)

oh.  well.  that's interesting.

a friend of mine just read my potion story -- the kidnapped little girl who goes all cthulhu on the situation -- and said "hey, did you know stephen king already did a short story like that?"

cut to me, all like, "what?!"

apparently, great minds think alike.

There was a story I thought that King or someone wrote that had a girl turn into a tentacle creature, but maybe I'm just getting old. The one in the link seems related to that story about the town that's under siege by demonic forces until they "give him what he wants", which is a boy whom the bad guy takes and raises...

FYI  Here is the original Popsy by Stephen King.

Having just read it confess I much prefer @m3mnoch (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40419) story. This one meandered off into too much explanation about gambling addiction for me.  ;)
